Liz helps Norm lay composite decking. Charlie makes exterior decorative brackets. Kevin watches a quartz countertop get installed. Roger’s crew paves the front walk. Liz puts in her stained glass window. Dry wells are needed for storm water runoff.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse.
Kevin arrives and checks out the finished front porch. Everything is new except for the original railing, which was saved.
The Norway maple that was taken down is being split into firewood for a new wood-burning stove.
The siding is almost complete - with clapboards on the first floor and shingles on the second floor.
Out back, Norm and homeowner Liz are working on the composite deck. Liz would rather be using the deck with her family than spending her time maintaining it. There is a system to laying down the planks.
At the new two-story addition, more ornamental brackets to match the original ones are being installed under the eaves. Kevin visits Charlie's shop, where he's making them using western red cedar.
At the Idea House, Kevin sees quartz counters get installed in the new kitchen. The sections are connected with a machine that draws the pieces together.
Back in Newton, the concrete walkway leading up to the front porch is gone and now Roger's crew is using uniform pavers to create a new walkway in a running bond pattern.
Inside, Liz and stained glass artist Michel L'Huillier install Liz's stained glass window in the new mudroom. The colors were inspired by the Japanese maple right outside.
When a home gets expanded on its lot and creates more impervious surfaces, the town requires the homeowner to deal with the rainwater runoff. Kevin finds Roger by a long, deep hole in the location of the new driveway, where eight drywells get lowered in. The size and capacity of the drywells are calculated by an engineer.

9in of rain in 24hrs is a typical storm in Houston. It is fascinating how different parts of the country refer to bad storms and weather in general. On mans storm is another man's answered prayers.
@richardgrace5043
@richardgrace5043 2 жыл бұрын
They are referring to the "100yrs storm" that hit the southeast (I know I live in south carolina) we got over 9inches of rain in 24hrs but what fuked us is it didn't stop for around a week so the drainage system and ground couldn't handle it... literally had entire roads shut down and water bubbling up from the sewers and manholes in the roads because it was just WAYYY to much water (and as I said didn't stop or even really let up at all for like a week was essentially a tropical storm that just froze over us)

@@SomeDudeQC yeah we did. An unprecedented cold front that dropped temperatures to a new record, combined with the unreliable nature of renewable energy that was forced upon us, led to the grid going almost completely down. Thankfully, since we are our own grid without interconnects, we were able to recover. The storm really helped show how the grid can not be operated with "green" technology. Had politicians and ignorant fools not pushed the removal of reliable energy production and replaced them with inefficient and environmentally unfriendly sources like wind and solar, we would not have had the issues we did.
