Not many people going to want to buy that tool but I think it would be easy to make a 45 degree attachment for a Rotozip or similar tool. Most people will just end up using a different type of weatherstripping.

Rotozips are too underpowered to cut the groove in wood unfortunately. That special tool he uses is insanely expensive. Stick on or screw on weatherstripping are the only real answers for retrofitting doors without the groove.

What was the make & model of the router attachment that he used for making the corner Grove?

@@jeremybaumgart I suspect it is the system from Resource Conservation Technologies out of Baltimore. They used to ship and rent it for a week. May have to call them. I had one until it got stolen.

Easier to just buy the screw on the jamb weatherstripping. You just position it against the door instead of worrying about different sizes.

Is it not standard for a door to have weatherstripping? Is that really necessary to drill a notch or just use 3M double sided tape?

I heard the double sided tape has worse performance, but I don't know.

May I ask why you removed the brass weather stripping in the beginning? I have the same thing on my front wooden door.

Tends to not be airtight/as tight as something that compresses

Start in the middle and push towards them for top and bottom or across the header.

Hi tom, i live in kashmir and i am not able to find this silicone weather stripping over here. Can you assist how will i get and how much it costs as i am. Thinking of doing it for all my doors and windows. We dont have sash windows we have the windows like the door opens

What a shame, spring bronze weatherstripping was and should still be an artform. The most durable long lasting and efficient weatherstripping ever invented. Replacing it with plastic will only last at most five or six years before Dusty replaced again. Spring bronze weatherstripping good last 3040 to 50 years it properly maintained.

But it leaves gaps at the latch and the deadbolt. Not a complete solution, to that extent.

For 99%of people, this router and weatherstripping is never going to happen. Bad advice for the masses.

So you have to go get a new tool to install $10 of weatherstripping? Gimme a break. This is why I avoid This Old House recommendations.
