I’ll never understand why people can’t just appreciate these breathtaking movies. They spend 7 years or more, producing these moving masterpieces, only for the idiots to dictate whether to cut them short or not. I couldn’t even begin to imagine how badly they could’ve ruined Princess Mononoke for true Ghibli fans.

Not a universal rule though that longer equals better…so many films these days are bloated for no apparent reason.
@federationofbread
@federationofbread 2 ай бұрын
@@liddz434 that's more likely in adult movies tho. What we need right now is longer, more indepth movies for KIDS. More and more studios these days are making movies shorter and shorter because apparently "kids doesn't like long movies and will get bored" One of the most recent example is Kungfu Panda 4. Where they could spend a little bit more time diving through the backstory of the 2 new introduced characters. But instead they made no effort whatsoever to any of their backstory. And what remains is a hollow annoying main character and a "ooo scaryyy" Lifeless villain.

And the Ghibli version is still more involving, despite being 2D and the characters are infinitely more sophisticated,despite being a "kids" movie and he doesn't ruin the whole thing with the obligatory Holywood war at the end to decide who is "right". Ghibli version is waaay more subtle.

The thing is, they might have backed down but there's lots of interesting articles online worth reading about this movie and how it didn't perform as well as it should have in the USA. Part of the reasons I've seen quoted was that the studio didn't market this movie well. Weinstein being butthurt being likely why as the initial reviews in the states were positive. Thus proving that Miyazaki was right and the story can still be understood by a foreign audience without shortening/ dumbing it down. Gaiman said in interviews he was constantly asked to simplify the story. Or change things cause it would be 'too confusing' for an animated movie audience.

Weinstien was notorious for making terrible decisions; not just as a person but as a business man. He insisted Snowpiercer's theatrical cut be trimmed down to remove most of its non-action scenes, not because he thought it was too long, but because he believed the film's themes were too smart for Midwestern audiences to relate to. Ultimately he gave the film a limited release in the US for basically no reason, since he apparantly couldn't see the mainstream appeal of an action movie starring Chris Evans. He also was offered the Lord of The Rings trilogy, but refused to produce it unless the filmmakers condensed all three books into one film, as he somehow thought making one movie with God-awful pacing would be more profitable. Its amazing he backed down in this case, as his carrier was largely defined by him cutting up and neutering films he produced because he thought American audiences were too dumb to enjoy anything too smart or over 90 minutes long. Even if you completely ignore all of his moral failings he just did not understand how movies work at a fundamental level.

It was a confusing movie too, dont act like it wasnt, and honestly, it mightve come out "better" and more comprehensible in the American version. But this shit was so good as it was, man. I'm not saying it shouldve been a certain way, and Idk jack about this predator guy. Anyways with the movie its almost a blessing how it could "force" you to fall asleep trying to watch it, promoting wild dreams

If it was any other movie than Mononoke, it would have been different. It broke the box office record at the time for ANY movie in Japan, not just animated. They knew they couldn't lose it, or Miyazaki. *It should also be noted that Mononoke was Miyazaki's proudest work, famously having gone over every single animation cell (every frame) to personally touch them up. It was also a higher framerate overall, and they played around with it for the demon worm effects.

Too bad Weinstein didn't use the sword to commit hari kari. The biggest mistake the studio made, in my opinion, was casting Billie Bob Thornton as the monk. His voice is so heavily American that it broke the spell whenever he spoke.

They actually did this with Nausicaa, they butchered the film for the English dub. Because of that, Miyazaki refused to let America touch any of his films for a long time.. But eventually gave in later when (I think it was John Lassiter) asked if they could dub Spirited Away with the promise that the ONLY thing they would do is translate the script as closely as they can and not cut anything. One thing I don't like though is how the dubs like to add in little words here and there in places where the original film was actually silent because they're trying to be funny.... But it's just annoying 😒

It's a good English dub as well - despite a couple of issues.

Badass director vs convicted criminal producer. Shakespere in love was forgotten. The boy and the heron got the Oscar and Miyasaki was nowhere to be found😂
