Thoha Khalsa is a village of Kahuta Region of District Rawalpindi in Pakistan. The village is located in the South East of Rawalpindi city at the distance of about 30 miles. The language used by its people is Pothohari dialect of Punjabi. The population is about 20,000 consisting Janjua Rajput, Ghakhar, and few others - all Muslims. Current inhabitants may not even know that it was a flourishing village of Sikhs before the partition of India (creation of Pakistan). The village was inhabited by wealthy Sikh families - Bindras, Duggals, Anands, and Chandhoks.
Sectarian violence erupts in Punjab as Muslim League announces partition and creation of Pakistan, a Muslim only nation carved out of India. Sikh leader Master Tara Singh declares opposition to the partition and tears the flag of Pakistan in Lahore. To the dismay of Sikhs and Punjabis, Indian leaders Gandhi and Nehru cave in to the demand of Pakistan.
On the evening of March 9, 1947, mobs from the tribal areas entered Thoha Khalsa and gave ultimatums to the Sikhs to convert. On that evening, the impact of their presence was negligible due to the lateness of the hour but the actual clashes started the next morning, when their numbers swelled to one thousand. The local helpless and poor Muslims who had earlier assured safety to the Sikhs, remained mute spectator when violence started due to their poverty, victimization, helplessness and lack of weapons.
After resisting for three days, the Sikhs hoisted white flags and negotiated truce with the Muslim mobs. Under the agreement, the mobs will loot their houses but will not burn them, kill men, or dishonor the women. The Sikhs collected Rs. 20,000 and gave to the mob leaders as demanded. They then abandoned their own houses and all gathered in the central Haveli of Sardar Gulab Singh. His mansion was huge with large boundary wall. Others took shelter in the "Dukh Bhanjani" Gurdwara located next to Gulab Singh's mansion.
From Gulab Singh's Haveli, they saw their houses being looted and burned for six days. After looting the houses, the Muslim mob turned to Gulab Singh's Haveli and surrounded it. Their intentions appeared menacing and it was clear that they do not intend to honor the terms of the truce.
But when defeat and dishonor was imminent, Sikh men started to prepare for the battle till death. While their men fought, the Sikh women started gathering near a well around the garden. When just women and children were left, Maan Kaur led all the women to a large well inside the Haveli. She recited "Japuji Sahib" the Sikh prayers and jumped inside the well. Over 93 Sikh women followed her and all committed mass suicide in order to save their honor.
On March 12, 1947 after long and heroic resistance, 200 Sikhs were killed. The women were asked to embrace Islam, but 93 of them, old and young, decided to escape dishonor by drowning themselves in a well, which they did. The Muslim invaders, aghast at this tragedy, fled from the place. A little later, the military arrived and rescued the survivors.
The news of the massacre at Thoha flashed on national newspapers. The Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten visited the village to assess the situation firsthand. He saw the loss of property and life at Thoha Khalsa and met with the survivors and heard their ordeal directly. Lady Mountbatten led the rescue and hospitalization of the victims.
Survivors reached the safety of refugee camps in Rawat, Kahuta and lived to tell their stories.

Gilani Sb...I want to add one incidence, My Great Grand Father name was Babe Bahadar he lives in Addra, near 22 No.Chungi. In 1984 5 sikhs came to meet my Grand father (Master Fazal), I asked who r these sikhs My G.Father told me that he is Harnam Singh. Than he said in 1947 Me & My father saved 2 Sikh families from murder very bravely. Harnam Singh was a kid he has 1 brother and 3 sisters.On death bed , his father told him to say thanks to Master Fazal for saving our life, honour and money. So when Harnam came to Punja Sahib , he visited our house as well to say thanks from his father side.

My grandparents migrated from a nearby village..."Rakh" (Bhura Hayal). And also, you are absolutely right, I was told the same thing by my grandparents that the rioters were outsiders and not from the areas around. In fact, one of the local Muslim residents helped my great grandfather escape.

Narratoon given in Rawal Raj of Sajjad Azhar conflicts in some incidents like you have told that the first woman jumped in the well was a sikh servant whereas Sajjad says that she was Lajawanti wife of Gulab Singh. بہت شکریہ جناب گیلانی صاحب کشمیر میں مسلمانوں کی زندگی بے حد مشکل تھی اور ڈوگرہ راج سے نجات کی تگ دو سن 1800 سو شروع ہوچکی تھی، جس کی ایک مثال 1832 میں منگ کے مقام پر ڈوگرہ فوج کے ہاتھوں مسلمانوں کی زندہ کھالیں کھنچوائی گئیں، کشمیری مسلانوں کے ان حالات کی ہندوستان کے مغربی حصے(موجودہ پاکستان) میں مسلمانوں کو خبر تھی، اور ان میں شدید بے چینی تھی، کیونکہ مسلمانوں پر مظالم کے حوالے سے آکالی دل کا کلیدی کردار رہا تھا، صدیوں سے ظلم کے شکار مسلمانوں کے اندر 1947 آتے آتے نفرت ایک آتش فشاں کی شکل اختیار کرچکی تھی، اور پھر کیا ہوا ہم سب جانتے ہیں۔

U should also feel sad for Muslims. Sikhs were killed in many times less number than the muslims were killed. Countless muslim women killed themselves to save their honours from sikh invaders. And it were sikhs who started killing first.

My appreciations to you. 1947 میں جو کچھ سرحد کے دونوں طرف ھوا ، انسانیت عرصے تک منہ چھپا کے روتی رھے گی۔ بلکل اسی طرح کا واقعہ سر ھند شریف میں پیش آیا تھا جب بہت سی مسلمان عورتوں نے آپنی عزتیں بچانے کے لیے کویں میں کود کر خودکشی کر لی تھی ۔ عطا الحق قاسمی صاحب نے اپنی کتاب ھند یاترا میں اس دردناک واقعہ کا تفصیلی ذکر کیا ہے ۔

I am from a family which migrated from Gujranwala Pakistan. I have not meet any family which migrated from Pakistan did not get family members killed. My great grandfather was killed in Gujranwala. We did not care about property and other things looted but have pain of family members murdered in cold blood. All this was done so properties Hindu , Sikhs could be looted quickly. What pains is those Muslims who migrated from India were not given anything and all assets were kept by local goons. Here in INDIA MUSLIMS WHO LEFT POOR have very rare anyone got a pukka house left. So refugees started from scratch.

It was really a very unfortunate event. During the era of partition in sub continent, it was Rawalpindi the very first city where the Hindu Muslims clashes erupted. However, later the hindues and Sikhs carried out organized massacre against Muslims throughout the India. The incident of Amratsar is worth mentioning in this context

Gilani Sahib, thank you for this informative video and correction of history of this region. In this regard great work has been done by some authors like Dr. Ishriaq Ahmed in his book The Punjab Bloodied. In this context an important aspect is often ignored, why Muslims and Non-Muslims who were living peacefully long before partition of Subcontinent, became hostile to each other. Here colonial rule has played an important role by encouraging different extrimest views and showing inability to protect fundamental rights of the people which, in my opinion, must be emphasized.

I do not deny the divide and rule policy of the British and also agree that all this was a phase of colonial rule but I must say here that our leaders also did not take concrete steps to stop these riots. It is true that they could not go to every village or city and hold anyone's hand, but it is also a fact that on March 3, 1947, Master Tara Singh raised anti-Pakistan slogans and the very next day in Lahore and Amritsar, Muslims attacked non-Muslims. At that time, All India Muslim League was there, why did it not take any action, the result of which was that the series continued and the allocation was also erased as to who had taken the initiative.

My mother and her parents were also refugees from Dahli to Lahore, she told Sikh and Hindus first started brutally murdered Muslims. When Pakistani Muslims received the dead bodies of their beloved once, afterwards they start killing Hindus and Sikhs

Your parents may be right but the reverse is the case here according to the history. In 1947, the first train of refugees left Peshawar for Amritsar, carrying Hindus and Sikhs, but only dead bodies reached Amritsar. After that, no train could reach Pakistan safely from East Punjab. It was revenge for the exchange. But the confusion is still there that who started this bloodshed.

Very good narration of this tragedy. I wrote an article published in a Pakistani paper regarding this mass suicide. Evil people, especially intellectuals, blame the women for committing suicide but none blames the killers or attackers with bad intentions. This incident was the spark that ignited Punjab mayhem.

Shah sahib, Salam from another Syed brother to you. Thanks for a very sad chapter of tragic episode. Very sorry that it happened and how innocent women were forced to commit suicide, I wish that it had never happened and we owe an apology, just like several massacres of Muslim men & women took place in East Punjab, two wrongs don’t make right, it’s high time for acknowledging the wrongs and moving forward. For a first, we should respect the places of worship of Sikhs & Hindus which were left behind, preserve them and then launch an effort to find the Kins of folks who lived there before partition, and invite them to visit their ancestral lands and this needs to happen on both sides. Peace and love for all.

What happened in Thoha Khalsa is a shame for us as Muslims but we still insist that what Sikhs did was wrong while we are completely innocent. What should happen is to learn from the mistakes of the past, forget them and move forward, but this is not happening. We still contend and propagate that history is wrong, only that we are right. You probably have no idea that for making this video, I was abused in the comments, doubted that I am Syed, called brother of Hindus and Sikhs and even wrote that I am working on a special mission. How can I hope that my nation will come to the right path, forget the past and move towards new destinations? Just pray My Brother. Stay blessed..

It’s natural for us SYEDs to raise our voice against injustice and tyranny, weather it was Karbala or any injustice and wrongs done, against anyone, regardless of which religion they belong to. It’s very unfortunate that we build false narratives and expect the rest of the society to keep on following those falsehoods. I live in states and know lots of Sikhs and find them very honest, hardworking, and above all, very loyal. I believe in building bridges. Peace ☮️

اتفاق سے میں نے کوئی ایک ہزار سے زائد کہانیاں لکھی ہیں جو اخبار جہاں سے لے کر آداب عرض تک پاکستان کے ہر بڑے چھوٹے ڈائجسٹوں اور رسالوں میں شائع ہوئیں جبکہ 23 سے زیادہ کتابیں بھی لکھیں جن میں خدا اور محبت ناول بھی شامل ہے۔ آپ کے تبصروں سے گمان ہوتا ہے کہ آپ یا تو افسانہ نگار یا کہانی کار ہیں یا پھر آپ میں یہ صلاحیتیں موجود ہیں کہ آپ ایک اچھی افسانہ نگار یا کہانی نویس بن سکتی ہیں۔ میرے وی لاگز میں میری ہم سفر بننے کا بہت شکریہ کیونکہ جب بھی میں کوئی وی لاگ کرتا ہوں تو خود کو اسی زمانے میں موجود سمجھتا ہوں ورنہ شاید میں ایسی عکاسی کبھی نہ کر سکوں۔ آج کے بعد تو میں یہ تصور کروں گا کہ آپ بھی میرے ساتھ ہیں۔ حوصلہ افزائی، پسندیدگی اور دعاوں کے لیے بہت شکریہ۔

The question is who initiated the genocide. Was it started by Muslims or by non-Muslims? What was the factor behind this? Muslims were very poor and all businesses and power were with non-Muslims. The Mosques of the Rawalpindi area were closed by non-Muslims and all Muslims were suppressed and mostly they were working on lands of non-Muslims as slaves. During the operation launched by Syed Ahmed Shaheed for the liberation of Mosques the Muslim Population was so suppressed that they were forced to fight against Syed Ahmed Shaheed and as a result Syed Ahmed was defeated and killed and he is buried in Blakot. It means that tension was already existing in this area due to which Qabailies attacked Sikhs who were a major armed force in this area. I do not mean that the attack on Sikhs was justified. As you explained the Qabbails was not a regular force and acted to help Muslims. However, telling the truth in history is always appreciated. The background/motivation of the situation should also be explained

You have raised very good and valid questions but I apologize that it is the job of our politicians and intellectuals to find out who started the genocide. As a student of history and a narrator, I know for sure that the first shot was fired by the Muslims. Master Tara Singh raised slogans against Pakistan and the first strike was held by Muslims in Amritsar. There should be a deep research into the background and the reasons why people living side by side for centuries became thirsty for each other's blood overnight. You say that one should speak the truth, but you cannot imagine how much it cost me to speak the truth in this vlog. Stay blessed and keep praying for me too.

I was reading a book named "The other side of silence" by Urvashi Butalia ,stories of partition are written in this book , in this book I read about thua khalsa ,about which I never knew ,I was horrified reading this then I searched on KZfaq found this video, thank you for your impartial narration Love from India

Extremely painful. Being a Muslim I strongly condemn . Historically, our tribal people always spoiled the good name of Islam in the name of religion. Would that it were not happened in the Indian Subcontinent. But finally I have to write, " It was nothing but Book of Fate." Against which we are quite helpless.
