Thomann's Guitars & Basses

Thomann's Guitars & Basses

5 жыл бұрын

While we were hanging out at Thomann, Rob Chapman said "Hey Andy, I am thinking about buying a lute for my father" I said, "Sure Rob, let's go try lots of funny instruments that are not guitars". We thought we may as well film it so here we all are jamming and having some fun in the shop with Darya in the string department.

I now want to try a lute tuned like a guitar, putting in key with my les paul and maybe use it on an album if i ever write one.... I just want to try a lute and see if I can do something interesting with it.
@semperortus
@semperortus 5 жыл бұрын
I play renaissance lute, solo and within ensembles. I can tell you as a fellow guitarist, that switching over to a lute is actually very challenging. It feels nothing like a guitar. The frets are made of tied pieces of gut, the string tension is about half that of a classical guitar, and your right hand technique has to be totally different (thumb-under) in order to make the right sounds from the thing. When I first began learning lute, I also wanted to tune it like a guitar, but I quickly realized that it's in a different instrument family and needs to be approached on its own terms in order to make any progress with it. If you have a spare $1,000 (for an EMS lute) or $2,500 (for a Luth Doré renaissance 8-course model), I highly recommend buying a good student lute and learning to play it. (I wouldn't waste money on cheaper instruments. You'll be frustrated with poor quality/playability.) Diana Poulton's Lute Tutor book is available from Amazon, and it'll give you the best overview of how to play and what to play. Renaissance Lute is among the more difficult instruments I've ever learned to play. You can't just pick one up and strum it. That'll sound terrible. It really makes you WORK to get a good tone and clean note execution out of it, and the 16th c. pieces themselves are often akin to crunching jazz chords in the left-hand with Chet Atkins-style right-hand wizardry (see lute compositions from John Dowland for great examples).
