Don’t let the visuals mess with you, India- videography was still such a new concept in the ‘80’s, so a lot of them pushed the creative envelope and didn’t necessarily tell the exact same story as the lyrics. The general parallel between the audio & visual is the madness of natural love/lust. “I can smell the chemicals” is reference to the natural pheromone produced when someone is sexually charged. Animal attraction is not base emotion, it is the science of nature. {love this freaky song, and lots of love to you & the kids!}

Thomas Dolby is awesome, he also is quite varied, this one is a pretty middle of the road for him (yes, it is awesome, but it quite frankly is one of his more mainstream ones), some of his extremes would be "Hyperactive" (the video for this one is nifty) and "One of our submarines", other excellent ones are "Airwaves", "The Flat Earth ", "Windpower", "Europa and the pirate twins", "Dissidents", and "White city". Oh, he also made the soundtrack to the movie "Howard the duck".

Another fun fact: Thomas Dolby composed the now famous Nokia polyphonic ringtone. So he really did end up blinding us with science and technology. Very underrated artist. His album "The Flat Earth" still sounds amazing to me. And Eddie Van Halen was a fan and performed a guitar solo on Dolby's song "Close But No Cigar".

Listen to his song “Hyperactive” The woman as a musical instrument is I believe inspired by the surrealist photographer Man Ray. The stuff in the yard was the mad scientists with their failed inventions. Thomas Dolby is the son of the man who invented Dolby stereo so this makes the song especially amusing. His dad is a scientist.
@FiveCentsPlease
@FiveCentsPlease 3 жыл бұрын
+ Christopher Leonard Dolby is a stage name and his real name is Thomas Robertson. His father Martin was a very distinguished university professor in Greek studies in the UK. Dolby Stereo was created by Dolby Laboratories, started by a man actually named Dolby.
@MarkJones-mm3br
@MarkJones-mm3br 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was a false rumor going around that he is the son of the guy who invented Dolby stereo. In fact, the company Dolby Laboratories sued him to try to stop him using "Dolby" as a stage name (and lost). Thomas's real surname is Robertson. The funny thing is, the actual son of the guy who invented Dolby stereo *is* called Tom Dolby (probably where the rumor came from).

This was so creative and out of the norm for us in the 80s! And it was one of the FEW intelligence-positive songs out there. Nerdy was sexy! It was a huge antidote to the Pop/sex/dance of the world.

There was an incredible New Wave music scene in the '80s with a massive catalogue of "alternative" music; but you had to get away from the pop music fashion clubs of the day and usually head into the gay clubs. I wasn't gay but LOVED going to the clubs for not only the music but how accepting everybody was of individuality (including us nerds!). You didn't have to dress, dance, or look like anybody else -- it was a super great atmosphere where you could just be you. Eventually, more people got word of this "underground" scene and it didn't take long for there to be more straight people at the clubs than gays! That sort of bothered the gay community a bit, but they were cool with it as long as everyone "behaved"... It was a crazy decade for sure, and it helped me to recognize and accept an alternative culture of beautiful amazing people.

Before this, Thomas Dolby played keyboards for Foreigner in 1981. Co-produced by Mutt Lange. A few years later, Lange sang background vocals on this song. Then, Lange got Dolby to play keyboards for Def Leppard in Pyromania. In a later album, Eddie van Halen played lead guitar in 2 Thomas Dolby.songs.

I felt the same way you did listening to this for the very 1st time India,the only thing was it made my playlist,so much so,that i bought the 12" record of it,& spun it until it wouldn't spin no more.I went back to get another 12" record of it,but when i returned with it my mother said "So help me God if you play that song 1 more time!!"..(and she liked it like me at 1st-lol).I then put in my 'headphones'-lol.After all of this i get the nickname 'Goofy'..exactly what this song ..& video is.It was a heavy spinner on Mtv back in the days.Loved how you liked it being so 'different',especially from someone who relishes in it..& like me as well.One of my very favorite reactions from you India,(& there's alot)..& Thank You again for reacting to it.P.S. India,you mentioned it's got hooks you like in this song,& i know you like rap music,Mobb Deep took the hook & made it their own,with their 'Got It Twisted' song,maybe,just maybe that's the version that'll make your playlist.Again,loved your reaction to this..it made my day.

Excellent that you've done a Thomas Dolby reaction India! Weirdly, despite him being from here in the UK, his first album 'The Golden Age of Wireless' which as you mentioned this track is from, and a few other releases from the album, actually did better in the US than here in the UK. Not sure why or how though lol. The scienist in the video is an actual British scientist called Dr. Magnus Pyke and I remember him appearing on various kids programs here in the UK in the 70's and 80's and always seemed quite eccentric and throwing his arms up and down when he was demonstrating various experiments lol. He gained a PHD in Biochemistry and worked for the Ministry of Food here in the UK during WW2 and had various publications on food and nutrition - Back to Dolby, he is also a session musician to various music artists and has also produced albums and tracks for other artists (Joni Mitchell, Foreigner, Joan Armatrading, Belinda Carlisle and Prefab Sprout.........to name a few). Other tracks for you to react too:- I Love You Goodbye (my fave) - Urges - Leipzig - Europa and the Pirate Twins - Flying North - I Scare Myself - One of Our Submarines - Cruel - Windpower - Airwaves - Hyperactive (I'm actually not a fan of this track lol) - The Flat Earth - Budapest By Blimp - Close But No Cigar - Oceana - Nothing New Under The Sun - Valley of the Mind's Eye. Keep up the awesome work India :-) xx

I'd like to say that Thomas Dolby is a genius musician known only as a one hit wonder and people don't consider him a great singer but know him as a synthesizer guy. I hope you listen to Valley of the Mind's Eye by Thomas Dolby. He even whispers French lyrics in the intro before hearing him sing at his best.And if you have the time give Beauty of A Dream a listen. Written for his wife,, Valley of the Mind's Eye done all by himself without a band shows we were robbed of a truly talented singer/musician. He would not listen to his record label when they wanted him to continue to release goofy synthesizer songs like "She Blinded Me With Science" so they buried him as much as they could. Thanks for the great video. Love reactions from good people

Thomas Dolby is a British Techno-Pop/New Wave/Rock music artist. He got his start playing a synthesizer in Lene Lovich's band, before embarking on a solo career. He had a handful of solo hits in the early-1980s, such as "Europa (And the Pirate Twins)", and "Radio Silence" (a song about a pirate radio station on a small UK ship, that sunk during a storm). Both of the songs have music videos for them, and I recommend that you react to them, when you are able to find the time to do so.

The motif of a woman's back has been around for a long time. Look up "Le Violon d'Ingres 1924" it's in the J Paul Getty Museum in LA.

Funny thing, I used to live a few blocks away from Dolby's apartment several years ago. Pretty cool guy. Since summer is coming India, all I can recommend is a nostalgic tune that's on my summertime jams playlist... Sugar Ray - Someday

India, you have helped me see something that I have never seen before in this video; and I began watching it in 1983. Starting at 1:23 Dolby begins a part by saying: "I can smell the chemicals". Then beginning at 1:27 you say "perfume" then "he can smell her chemicals". The word chemicals was highlighted for me when you said that. At 1:36 Dolby does several sniffs with his right nostril while he holds his right finger on the right side of his nose. Then followed by another sniff with his left nostril and Dolby stares directly into the camera with a very knowing look. At about the same time, you had a strong physical reaction which somehow sparked a realization for me that Dolby was singing about c^caine. Consider mind blown. Now that I see it I cannot unsee it. 😅 Do you see this as well?

The 80s didn't make a lot of sense. That's what was so great about it.

I would love to see you react to Sade ‘By Your Side’ I heard this song when my son went in for emergency open heart surgery during lockdown in London, meaning he had to do it all alone, he is 21 😞. Dropped him at the car park and a week later picked him up from the car park - worst week of my life. Went for a walk to clear my head, this song came on and I had tears falling from my eyes. They’re always your baby. He is fit and well now thank God for the NHS 🌈

That IS one of her best songs.One of my very personal favorites from her.India knows all of 'Sade' growing up on her she once said.Jazzish music is what she grew up listening to..it's her favorite genre.It's a longshot that i do hope happens though.
