Trackmaster Thomas trains from The DVD The Journey Beyond. Steelworks Thomas, Steelworks Hurricane and Merlin The Invisible Engine. These Thomas & Friends toy trains are some of the best Trackmaster 2 sets I have seen. The rolling stock has a steelworks theme with moving features. The twin molten steel cauldron wagons are a standout. The dirty Steelworks Thomas The Tank is vastly different to a standard Trackmaster 2 Thomas. It has a special featured face that working hard and grubby. The dirty detailing is done in the same way as you would see on Thomas MINIS. Steelworks Hurricane is well detailed and has the best sets of rolling stock. But the most amazing train in this set of 3 is Merlin The Invisible Engine. This toy has a mirror like chrome finish that makes it a stand out Thomas toy. This is the first time I have seen this style of detailing on Trackmaster toys. Merlin has a chrome tender and rolling stock that features a moving machine and piston. At the time of reviewing these toys I have not seen the Thomas film The Journey Beyond. I'm sure the Thomas audience will fill in the gaps of info and correct all my mistakes.
Steelworks Hurricane is based on the GER Class A55 "Decapod", an experimental tank engine named so for its ten driving wheels. It was designed to prove that steam locomotives could compete with emerging electric locomotives. It never entered regular service and was rebuilt to an 0-8-0 tender engine in 1906, being assigned to haul coal trains for GER's March district, remaining the only eight-coupled steam locomotive to work on GER. It was later scrapped in 1913.
Merlin The Invisible is based on the LSWR N15 Class, referred to as the "King Arthur" class by the Southern Railway, specifically No. 783 Sir Gillemere. In 1943, Sir Gillemere was fitted with three stovepipe chimneys by Oliver Bulleid as a wartime experiment. The way the smoke was spread out was meant to make the trains less visible to bombers overhead. The experiment was not a success, and the engine was quickly converted back to normal. No. 783 became No. 30783 under British Railways after nationalisation in 1948 and was withdrawn in March 1961.
My simple advice is purchase these toys on Amazon. I find it too difficult to buy Thomas toys in store. These toy trains will be very popular.

I know TOMY did a Japan-only gold set of Thomas, Annie, and Clarabel, but they're mad expensive and rare. I noticed Merlin and Hurricane both have black front buffers, that's nice to see.

The black things on his top are his 3 funnels to make his steam disperse when his engine was made it was used during WWII and the things next to his face are called Smoke deflectors

Wow. Saw these in store but didn't realise how amazing these are! No way they will last! Keen to seen more of this style of train, what a great idea to print like MINIS-finally getting some details that have been sorely lacking. Rolling stock is also excellent... my goodness! Maybe mattel listens after all ;)

Problem is they are very late in doing awesome stuff. If they really listened classic Trackmaster would still be with us. There is no point trying to pull kids away from iPads because you can't. The battle is over, the iPad has won.

Not only do toys have that but the fact it’s real makes it more fun **unless kids have train sims that cost money** then the iPad has won

The easiest way to explain it without spoilers is that the film is thomas' first adventure outside sodor. Hurricane is an anti-hero like character whereas Merlin is a somewhat silly engine who assists thomas at a point in the film. I watched the film after seeing your set reveiw. 20 and i still love thomas as it was my childhood. 6am every morning id be up. Though i loved the original model version; after watching all seasons and films in a long marathon ive grown to appreciate the voice acting and cgi

I really gotta say that these are extremely nice for trackmaster revolution/2. They are extremely well detailed and well proportioned(minus Thomas) and I really feel that Mattel went all out in creating these toys, I mean Thomas even has a different face expression! The rolling stock is also really good with the action features and just the fact it's not just primary colored crap. I have not purchased any trackmaster 2 yet but I am really liking Merlin and may just purchase him. Also I have seen Journey Beyond Sodor and I highly recommend you watch it. There are plenty on HD rips off it on KZfaq.

The news of the bouncing engines bothers me heaps, it de-railed (no pun intended) Chuggington and it's NOT going to work with Thomas. There seems to be a real babyfication going on with the Thomas empire. Looks like Mattel are trying to get the kids attention before they hit the iPads and digital devices.

Hurricane is a tank engine that works at the steel works with an engine called Frankie, and Merlin is an experimental engine that "works" with two other engines called Theo and Lexi

Hurricane works at the steelworks with an engine called Frankie. They lure Thomas into the steelworks, with a song, but they end up keeping him there and he escapes.

Great fun, Leo, I like the rubber chicken... : ) The first radius curves seem to cause "confusion and delay", the second radius mainly ok. I wonder if the "gear pattern" in the track is to blame ? Regards, Cliff.

I'm not a fan of the CS (curve short) track. But it's the most common curved track I have with Trackmaster2. When you look closely at the trackmaster 2 system it's a nightmare, so many components, so many special track pieces. I really wonder why we needed this change. Sadly I feel these changes happen to make the older toys unable to work.

I suppose Mattel had to make the wheel and track changes to enable the trains to perform like "roller coasters", but in doing so, they have created "built in obsolescence". Therefore mums and dads, grans and grandpas, now have difficulty adding to "little Johnny's" train set... : / Regards, Cliff.

I've had an idea for those trouble-some curves.... The locos don't have a differential, no wonder they are "chomping at the bit" to escape the rails. So I suggest an experiment with say 4 of your curves...run a warm soldering iron along the inside "rail" only, to enable the inside loco driver "to skid", and let the outer wheel actually pull the train. I know you are good at experiments... :D Cheers, Cliff.

As it just came to me: You talked about the free apps and iPads that are taking over the the play time of children and I had a thought. I've seen some news about Mattel not doing so well financially. The other brands like Paw Patrol and Bob the Builder are really selling out, while for example rusty Stephen and Toby are sitting on the shelf and get dusty. I think Merlin's chrome paint is one of Mattel's despret trys to get attention to win the battel against the other brands and the iPad.

That thing that Merlin hauls is a Piston, the same thing that Percy has (On models that actually have that) To my knowledge, i don't recall seeing a piston without an engine.

Leo Let me explain Steelworks Thomas, Merlin and Hurricane for you. Hurricane Works at a steelworks with a diesel shunter called Frankie. Frankie and Hurricane basically hold Thomas hostage at the Steelworks. But Thomas escapes the steelworks using Thomas P-P-P-P-POWER! Merlin is one of the experimental engines along with Theo and Lexi. His three funnels were an experiment designed so that you could not see him very well. Thats why he is called "The Invisible". But the experiment failed. The steelworks Thomas is when Thomas is held hostage at the steelworks. He works there moving steelworks items like ingots and slag. Thats why Thomas has pink cheeks and grime on him. I hope this was helpful to you.

Merlin is classed as an experimental engine in the film however, technically he isn't. He is a Southern Railway 'King Arthur' class (a very successful class of locomotive back in the day.) The numbers, 783, are representative of his basis. An engine of the same type built for the War Department in WW2. It had 3 funnel so the steam would disperse and make it 'invisible' so to speak, so as to hide from bombers. It was painted wait to blend in with the steam however the effect did not work at all.

No problem. Just one last note however. The 'things' on the side of Merlin's smokebox (where his face and funnels are) are called smoke deflectors. They are for moving the smoke and steam out of the drivers view so he can see properly.

You know what's funny, at my local Walmart, almost a year after they came out, still has 10 steelworks Thomas because they sell horribly here. Merlinand hurricane are both gone completely.

Local Target has a lot of these three TM2 locos. I want to obtain a Merlin at the very least, and a copy of the DVD to support the official release. Seen JBS by other means and I have to say, despite some issues in the movement department, it didn't disappoint. Evidently that's slag in those tipping wagons. Impurities while making steel, to be disposed of. I guess that is kind of a spoilery thing despite the fact they never actually say that's what it is in the film, hehe Also, they're smoke deflectors. Editing as I go, wee Merl's experimental, and his 'invisibility' isn't all it's cracked up to be... but the chrome here looks awesome

The reason the engine has three funnels is because when it turns "Invisible" steam comes through all of the funnels and it makes a giant cloud of smoke that makes the engine disappear

According to the movie, Lex (experimental engine)i explains that Merlin (experimental engine) is a Stealth Engine. He has the 3 stacks so he can whish more smoke to make him invisible. The movie is already on KZfaq and I have seen it several times. Like your review of these products.

Mattel is like a charity case now, the Thomas community will have to rally together and collect donations to keep it going! Although with the new Wooden Railway I can't see many fans defending Mattel anymore.
