Being from Metro Detroit, Tommy was always my hero & the sports person that I would like to meet over anyone else, Im 58. Happened to be in a somewhat dive bar restaurant having lunch with a buddy in a suburb of Detroit early June 2022. Just before we were going to leave, in walks f*cking Tommy Hearns & a couple other guys ! I got to meet him, he fist bumped me with that right hand that put Cuevas to bed. Only talked to him about a minute, told him he was my all time hero & God Bless him & what he did for the city of Detroit...Anyways, Im grateful as hell. He seemed like a very humble guy...LEGEND. Still watch the Hagler fight & pray for a different outcome.

Easier said than done, obviously Tommys proding jab kept him at bay and Tommy hit so hard it reset everyone. This can be proven by the fact that Roberto Duran the greatest in-fighter to ever live, could not even get in on Tommy. That goes to show that only otherworldly boxing skill, the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard could produce and just otherworldly Toughness and mettle the likes of The Marvelous one Marvelous Marvin Hagler possessed, were the only way to defeat Hearns, it took literally the greatest middleweight ever/All Time Great and one of the greatest p4p ever to figure out how to beat Hearns , other than those two guys Hearns is unstoppable really lmao

@@mariusloveless7880 Tommy Hearns skill as a boxer were so underated and I like how you point out that it took the greatest middleweight in history to solve his height and reach advantage with skills to match. As another footnote testimony to his boxing skills, he actually outboxed SRL in two fights. It took Angelo Dundee to tell Ray, "you're blowing it kid". You had to knock Hearns out to win while putting yourself at great risk.

Hearns would waltz through today's welterweight division. Cuevas was over matched from the beginning to the end of this fight. One problem though that Cuevas had for this short fight was his shoes which constantly slipped and slid the entire 2 rounds. Cuevas also didn't have enough head movement, he didn't try to work inside to smother Tommy's punches, nor could he take advantage of the fact that Tommy frequently would admire his work after big punches. Kellerman was right, Cuevas imploded like a detonated building.

At the weigh in, held in Detroit's Hart Plaza, about noon, Cuevas came in with a little Mexican band, that played music. As Pipino was weighing in the the band played on, Tommy grabs the mike and says "The only belt you are going to leave Detroit with, is the one holding up your pants"! And I was at a party with my parents playing music for them from the radio, and the announcer comes on and gives the announcement. I gave it, and it STOPPED THE PARTY! But the true greatness of those men back then, is that even after the brutal defeat, HEARNS AND CUEVAS became friends, and was even invited to have dinner at Cuevas home years later! And that was the FIRST FIGHT ever held in the Joe Louis Arena, and ironically Thomas the Hitman Hearns, ended his boxing career in that same arena, in a upset, injury filled fight, that some bum won, due to a broken ankle of the Hitman! IT WAS A NEAR RIOT, complete with thrown shoes and cell phones. NO MEDIA, has ever reported that, but I WAS THERE to see it and get trapped in it! WHAT AN ERA!

Yup, you nailed it. Not necessarily size although that was an advantage for Hearns but the style of Cuevas played into the hands of Hearns. With more movement he could have offset the reach advantage. I've always believed that a Duran-Hearns 2 would have been a much more interesting match because now Duran knew what he was facing and he was a much better slipper and weaver than Cuevas who was a real stand-up boxer. With Barkley and to a lesser extent - Hagler, Duran showed how to get inside and exchange. In the bout with Hearns, he got hypnotized by that the jab and simply didn't adapt yet he did have the style to get around it and the chin too

@CARL MOBLEY People who have never laced up the gloves, see boxing in their image. You go out and fight! Simple. Mayweather is a master of the science of boxing and with all that natural talent, he can maximize his efforts and minimize his risks. Not many boxers can do that. If he had the power of a big time hitter, say Hearns or even Leonard, he would have been outrageous and he would have taken more risks because even boxers like to smash their opponents. He didn't have that but he had so much speed, agility, quickness and boxing skill that he didn't need it to beat just about anybody from any period in boxing. No, I'm not one of those Mayweather boxing fan but I'm a student of the sweet science and I know a brilliant boxer when I see one and Mayweather it that guy which is why he's undefeated

True about the weight. Actually, I wonder what would happen if Hearns boxed conservatively for the WHOLE fight. At times, he tried going for the KO, expending energy, and at other times, making the fight slow with jabs. Hearns-Robinson at 154 would be something to see!

I was at this fight. Heck of a night. At 145 Tommy looked 6'5" despite only being 6'1". His reach was too much to overcome and it was very obvious that Cuevas was ill prepared and did not train with any boxers that were taller than him. He was doomed from the first bell.

I watched this fight live via satellite on big screens at, if I recall correctly, the Los Angeles Forum. The place was packed when a friend and I got there and we got nosebleed seats, but it really didn't matter because the fight was being shown on giant screens hanging from the ceiling. I swear this is true, when we got inside everyone there was either Black or Mexican. The guy I was with is Japanese and I'm a blonde and very white guy. We didn't see anyone else there who was white or Japanese. Soon as we sat down both the Blacks and the Mexicans started asking us if we wanted to bet, I mean we were getting bombarded with offers, but we both declined them all. When that first bell rang the place erupted in cheers and yelling for either Hearns or Cuevas. By the end of the 1st round the Blacks were dancing and yelling and the Mexicans were kind of stunned and silent. My and my buddy looked at each other wide eyed because we knew shit was about to get ugly. It was already clear to us Pipino was no match for Tommy. When the 2nd round started everyone was on their feet again and screaming for their guy. Pipino came out looking pretty good but Tommy was looking mean... really mean. By the end of the 1st minute the Mexicans had all quieted down again and the Blacks were on their feet screaming for Tommy, and just a few seconds later Tommy landed that KO punch and Pipino hit the canvas and then entire place was silent for a handful of seconds. Everyone was truly in shock. No one expected that to happen so fast. And then the Blacks roared when the fight was stopped and started giving the Mexicans shit, laughing at them and making fun of Pipino, and they didn't like that. Me and my buddy both looked at each other and said at the very same time "We gotta get outta here!", and we did. As we were leaving a big riot was just starting up. On the drive back to "The Valley" we heard on the radio that it turned into a huge brawl with lots injuries and some arrests made and that several people had been shot and stabbed and at least one was dead. I haven't seen or even heard of anything like it since then, but I swear that's all true.

Thomas Hearns was a great champion who was also lucky to have the body type he had. Against smaller guys like Pipino, Duran, Benitez, etc. Hearns had a big advantage, and as a great champion, he knew how to use his size and reach. However, when Hearns fought bigger guys like Barkley and Marvin Haggler, he got knock out cold...

Hearns had SRL in serious trouble in that round and got a little too wild and it might have cost him a victory. Oddly enough the punch that hurt SRL, was a left hook. That rd should have been score 10-8 in Hearns favor. Just like the 5th and 12th for SRL. Larry Merchant said it, this is the most trouble I've ever seen SRL in.
