Thomas Linley [the younger]
(Bath, 7 May 1756 - Grimsthorpe, 5 August 1778)
English composer and violinist. Son of the composer Thomas Linley (1733-1795), he was known as a child prodigy, performing a concerto on the violin at the Bath concerts in 1763 at age 7. Thereafter he was sent to London to study under William Boyce, and in 1768 he went to Italy to study under Pietro Nardini. He met Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart there in April 1770 and Charles Burney in September of the same year. He returned to England in 1771 and became a regular performer in concerts in Bath and London. He was leader at Drury Lane from 1773 to 1778 and often played concertos between the acts of oratorios. His tragic early death in a boating accident while on holiday with his family at Grimsthorpe Castle was one of the greatest losses that English music has suffered. As a composer, his music includes three operas, three anthems/odes (including one on Shakespeare), 20 songs, 20 violin concertos (most lost), and several smaller works. He was one of the most precocious composers and performers that have been known in England. The famous painter Thomas Gainsborough painted Linley’s portrait three times. His sisters Elizabeth Ann Linley (1754-1792) and Mary Linley (1758-1787) were both sopranos, and his brothers William Linley (1771-1835) and Ozias Thurston Linley (1765-1831) were musicians and composers.

I have this CD I love to listen to music by lost and forgotten English composers. His meeting with Mozart inspired him to write in the Austrian’s style, with a little Thomas Arne ❤ it thanks Pau I stand corrected I originally said Purcell Thank you.

It was the other way around, Linley used Thomas Arne, so Amadeus copied Arne as well. Mozart's first operatic aria was written in the "key" of Thomas Arne's "Artassera": W.A. Mozart "Conservati fedele" (1765) aria per soprano e orchestra - dal I atto della scena I dell"Artaserse".

Thank you Pau NG. You have come up with many many gems, but being biased I suppose because Linley is an English composer, this to me is one of your best yet. Someone has commented as to what Linley might have achieved if he had lived only as long as Mozart. Whether they might have collaborated and what they might have produced. Mozart prized the best out of his soloists, but given this was written by a 21 year old, in my opinion, I would think, in this area of composition at least, Linley was ahead of Mozart. A very sad loss to the world of music.

Full of magic (wonderful music, like his, preserved, Lyric Ode: "Ode on the Spirits of Shakespeare" - 1776.); great performance; thank you Pau NG for this post. Linley's compositions are mostly lost. The surviving works testify to his "innate" mastery of melody, gift for counterpoint and musical imagination. Since today everything is "measured" according to A. Mozart, then Tom Linley is the "English Mozart". Just as Amadeus learned from his father Leopold, a composer, Thomas also learned from his father, also a composer, Thomas Linley ("the elder"); father and son Linley wrote the comic opera "The Duenna" (21.11.1775) in the first season only (played) performed 75 times(!)Amadeus Mozart: "I feel that Linley is a real genius, if he had lived, he would have been one of the greatest ornaments of world music".

@@BohemianBaroque Yes of course. Amadeus writes to father Leopold: "You know that I indulge in music, so to speak - that I think about it all day - that I like to experiment - to study - to think"! A.Mozart was - "killed" - by "dissolute, unrestrained, life" (father Leopold's prophecy came true, unfortunately).
