From what I understand, Britt Allcroft may have confused the Down The Mine Pilot with the actual episode when mentioning that Ringo did narration, as someone who had reached out to Rick Siggelkow of Shining Time Station claimed that Rick had seen the pilot, and claimed that the voice in the pilot was not Ringo. Confusing situation all around tbh.

I don't know if someone's said it before but here's an explanation I got from Thomas' Train being considered as the pilot. When Britt Alcroft went to Ringo Starr requesting that he narrate the series, Ringo recorded two stories for her on tape. These were Down the Mine and Thomas' Train. Now don't quote me on this, but I believe they used Down the Mine and not Thomas' Train as the latter required more sets, characters and models. In fact, it's heavily rumoured that the Down the Mine narration he did at this point, was used for a Ladybird book cassette tape but correct me if I'm wrong. As for the John Lennon narrating Thomas, I find this highly unlikely as a Beatles fan. Britt Alcroft would've mentioned it and she was still trying to figure out how the series was going to be done by 1980. Plus, she got the rights for the series in 1979, one year before John Lennon's assassination. Correct me if I'm wrong of course, but I think this is purely rumour relating to the fact that Ringo, the narrator we got, was part of the Beatles. I remember seeing that Paul McCartney declined to narrate on Wikipedia but I think that was false as I never saw that again. However, it's important to note that, when Britt went to see Ringo and talk to him about Thomas, Ringo was living in John's house. Perhaps that's where the rumour comes from but of course, correct me if i'm wrong...

I think Small Railway Engines could've been adapted for Series 3 as there are some stories adapted for that series which links to them. i.e. Donald's Duck, Oliver Owns Up and Bulgy which were adapted from Oliver the Western Engine and they are mentioned quite a bit.
