16:43 That was an oversight in this game, in SH3 there is a guy who gets quite upset with Heather and calls her a murderer, she reacts along the lines of "The monsters are trying to kill, I gotta defend myself." He then replies with the most chilling line in any SH, "They look like monsters to you?" This implies that everything in SH is different for everyone at any given time (and the only logical explaination of the little girl survived in SH2).

I actually really liked this silent hill. Thought it was better than homecoming to. The chase sequences, the stalking of the crazy correctional officer, the choices that don’t matter, unless you want a different ending lol, I thought it was a solid game. I just wish newer Silent Hill games would go into better detail about how the town came to be cursed.

Imagine the game wasn’t even loosely Silent Hill related.... instant classic. I do remember hating the combat. And I definitely threw a lot of important weapons off a cliff. R.I.P. Boating hook. But all in all, I made it through the game multiple times and I do love it. Most prefer the tone and aesthetic of SH, SH3 and Origins, but I like when the town takes on a personality that reflects the main protagonist.

It’s nice to see Downpour getting a decent review. It’s not as horrible as people like to say it is. It’s not the best Silent Hill, but it was enjoyable. Plus, the soundtrack is good. Nobody can touch Akira Yamaoka, but Daniel Licht did a great job. Just like he did with Dishonored. And ... Korn. The song Korn did was really good.

My favorite part of Downpour was during an otherworld segment. It was a small part, but people who are familiar with Silent Hill 2, should appreciate it. You're running up the stairs to get away from the black hole and it's super reminiscent to a part in Silent Hill 2. It's when you're running down a super long hallway of stairs from the Historical Society to the Labyrinth/Prison. The foghorn is going off and you run for a long time, the foghorn getting louder the closer you get to the bottom to indicate you're going the correct way. The first time I played SH2 btw, I ended up going back upstairs when I was already halfway down, thinking I was missing something. After looking back around the small Historical Society, I realised that I could only progress at the bottom of the stairs and had to run for even longer, all the way back down. Back to Downpour... I was trained by SH2 to instinctively keep running up the stairs. I ran for about 5 minutes until I thought, "Oh, maybe this is different and I'm supposed to turn back around?" Then I did so and was able to progress the way I came, as the area had changed. This really messed with my head and made me laugh at myself. I really felt that this was a purposeful decision in the game design. The team obviously knew how beloved SH2 is to fans and that it's a lot of people's favorite in the series. They also knew the hardcore fans would most likely play Downpour, and in my opinion, I think they did the stairwell bit for the fans. I could be wrong of course but I don't think it was an accident. I really hope it wasn't lol. Regardless of whether it was a choice to put that in, or just an accident, it surprised me and made me analyse my nostalgia in a special way to think closer about SH2 and Downpour's game design. I simply really love that part.

Your description of the exploration makes it sound like a prototypical version of the level design in The Evil Within 2, which is excellent company to be in. I firmly believe that TEW 2 is one of the greatest survival horror games ever made.

I actually quite like these X360/PS3 Silent Hill games. They're not great but still have good atmosphere and environments to explore.

11 minutes in for context. As a big fan of lesser known games I think Downpour doesn't get enough attention. But the way you ramble off small details like someone explaining the finer qualities of that new coffee brew in the shop makes me appreciate all the more the aspects I already liked. Might actually do another run this October now. Your attention to minor details shines a light on things I acknowledge but don't focus on. And thus I marvel for a longer stretch of time. Despite relating to nearly every point from memory. I wish I could've watched you play this for the first time and heard your observations and experiences with quite a few of the side quests and 1 or 2 of the main areas. In particular, Turn Back Time and The Cinema are some of my favorite moments in a Silent Hill game. Oh and that opening sequence at the title screen is delightful. It's so very well done. Either way I'm enamored by your style of reviewing. I'm a heavy lurker so this is a rarity for me. But I hope to see more reviews like this. Thank you for giving Silent Hill Downpour some positive points. I'm sure it's not all good. But it's nice when you sit here in the shadows to have a friendly voice let you know your not completely crazy.

I thought Downpour is a good SH game. I like it. I do dislike the lags, the lack of enemy variety, the map that doesn't update meaningfully, and not being able to tell between a weapon and an item before picking them up.

I am curious. Wile you were talking about the story, it kind of felt like something was missing in your explanations. It lacked some shape or form of theories like if it was something obvious without pointing out anything about it. So tell me, what do you think the bogeyman represented?

You probably won't see this but I wanted to just add a little bit! Huge Silent Hill series fan and I actually rather like this silly little game. There's a companion comic (Anne's Story) that was released in late 2014 featuring Officer Anne Marie Cunningham that implies that Murphy is being used for HER Silent Hill experience (Most of the monsters are actually her monsters) before and after he goes through his own revelations. I genuinely love the comic and it makes me appreciate Downpour more. Also I actually do like that the canon ending is that Murphy is a good guy and not some horrible scumbag

It wasn't scary but it was the most original Silent Hill game in the most recent ones. The story was great, there were subtle creepy ass moments, the characters developed very well and the atmosphere was awesome. It just wasn't that scary. The creature designs werent very good. But the wheelchair man... he was creepy and the things he represented were incredibly upsetting which is something the Silent Hill games try to achieve more then anything. Downpour is an improvement with some well executed ideas that was slowly putting silent hill back on track. It was bogged down by a messy launch, not being very scary and meh creature design. It also wasn't as stylistically creepy as the original 4. 6/10 - a 7/10 after getting updates. It's an underrated silent hill game. No where near being the worst. That goes to origins and homecoming.

Downpour was the first SH game i beat and second i played. Played before 2-4. I loved it. I was pretty sad to know it was very disliked. Yeah it may not be no Silent Hill 2, but i found it charming. Also i guess i just didn't mind the combat, i must be a masochist.

Yooo, I've finally played this game this year, and this review lands really close to what I've felt. City exploration is about as good as it's been on the series, with the side quests you stumble upon being super fun to deal with. The otherworld is not even slightly scary and feels like a theme park ride, sometimes literally. Enemy design is absolute dicks, and the story isn't all that terrible but it's just not morally ambiguous enough to have any weight (oh no, he's wracked with guilt because he... killed the pedophile that killed his son, and didn't kill the mentor figure cop? No, nvm, that's cool with me too). Combat is just not very good, and the last level of the game is pretty much an hour of nonstop combat. Not quite up to par with the original SH trilogy, but honestly it's still like a super solid 7, will definitely replay in the future.

Everyone can say what they wanna say bout downpour but imo this game is not as bad as they say...I enjoyed it damn much and I know as a great silent hill fan from the beginning...it's not a silent hill like we know it but it has it's moments and it has a great atmosphere...and I must say...the music is great too...like the track when the bus is going to silent hill is damn epic...it describes the hell they are heading at...not knowing what they are up against...and same with Homecoming...I think the horror is very well present and I know the combat system isn't that great but once you get a hold of it it's very handy...the story is realy not that bad and as a pyramid head fan ( I know it represents James from SH2) I must say they did a great job with him here in this game...cause all the things that Alex has done wrong gets punished by pyramid head....wich is a great adding to the game...still gonna say I am still a big fan of the first 3 SH games but let's be honest...at least they tried to create a silent hill game for us fans...that cannot be said from Konami...they don't give a shit about us :( Silent Hill will forever be in our hearts! I like story in Downpour it's not brilliant or anything but I find it pretty interesting and it's not complete rip off of SH 2 it adds it's own threads. It's surely better than Homecoming bullshit and that little of the story that Origins offers

I loved this game! i love the story line, I loved the idea it had but didn't execute well. I loved how you could go into some houses and find out about the residents. BTW, what you FAILED to mention is that Murphy had broken some law to purposely get into the prison where his son or daughter killer resides in. He pays off a guard off a gaurd to be left alone with the child predator where he kills him. Then he is on a bus being sent to another prison where he gets into a accident in silent hills forest. This game had so much potential to be a series horror game. But there are so many glitches..... The same looking Villain AI repeatedly..... When it rains its suppose to be hard and monsters everywhere.... but its laid back.........

If you have read the 4 part comic run 'Anne's Story' that um, story, is a far more entertaining arch for a Silent Hill tale imo. Especially if you take it from the angle that you don't know that Murphy isn't the man Anne is after. Imagine that as a final choice in the game, after spending all that time getting through Silent Hill to catch and kill your Father's assailant, you are given the choice to kill or spare, where if you kill Murphy well you're damned and never leaving SH, but if you spare him you are given the truth and allowed to then proceed on to Sewell ;)

I thought this game was pretty fun honestly. It's a departure from the originals and it feels more like alan wake but it was pretty good.

The game in the western series that I really enjoyed. It actually tried to take something from the original games and sort of made something new with it.

I liked this entry and it felt as though it was a step in the right direction. Is it Silent Hill 1 - 3, no but it is a good survival horror game.

I tried to get back into it twice in the last couple years. ...There is some really killer sequences in here, two in particular that have a 'ride thru' (like in amusement parks) that make it worth playing to see. I felt a sense of accomplishment earning the hooded sweatshirt, and enjoyed my "evil" ending and the town overall is cool. But the regular adversaries in the game are all identical; why they put nothing into the most important thing and failed to capitalize on SH's biggest trademark of unique & horrifying creatures, is beyond me. It's just an inept thing to do; no business sense at all. They should have had the foresight to know that the game was incomplete (and would not make their money back) but still failed to put any interesting creature design in, and just shat out a half-finished product, then copied & pasted the same enemies over the entire game. The video game industry in the last 15 years, have collectively chosen to swallow a big choad and become incredibly obtuse, greedy cocksuckers that aren't fit to shovel shit from one place to another. ...and they should never be allowed to work again, for what they do to the fans and the franchises. They shoud be poor and suffer dissapointments for the remainder of their days, just as we the customers have. What the hell has the world come to. The future was supposed to be great, not a huge series of disappointing ripoffs year after year. Hope they enjoyed their fast cash-grab-in' dope money, because it's all anyone in this era/generation seems to really care about. Gone are the days when real work was put into art, shocking & surprising the fans. And that's a very depressing thing.

I'm glad you found the positives to this game... In all honesty I liked this game when I first started it but then as the game progressed I was so frustrated. Whenever you transitioned to new areas you lose all your weapons (not items), side quests are completely pointless, the details on the characters are bad (at that time it was a next gen title), there are only 4 or 5 different enemies in the game and they're annoying, killing them affects the story for some reason, you have to pause your game to view your health, rendering was tedious and unforgiving, the story made no sense because there was no story, choosing an action (like help or don't help) was pointless cause you'd get the same outcome either way (I think you only did this once throughout the whole game), the Bogeyman is literally no one, Other World was cool at first then it just got confusing and annoying, the black hole was so dumb and was basically just thrown in because the developers were lazy, repeating textures and environments, some puzzles were nearly imoimpossible, 1 boss battle, every weapon had the strength of a stick (impossibly-breakable weapons would break easily), the fast travel was confusing and almost pointless, it does not follow the original Silent Hill story, the mailman had no point, blah blah blah. I was literally disappointed in my own damn self after I finished the game. I see people saying they like it and giving it praise but I'm like "WHY?! HOW?! THIS GAME SUCKS!" And they'd bash me. Like "remember when you had to go to the police station to stop the police cars from patrolling? Remember if you got near one the screen would go dark and then come back and you're confronted with 3 or 4 bland lady monsters? Explain that.." I give the developers props for trying but honestly this game belongs in the trash and that's exactly where I put it. Didn't even want to return it or sell it, it was that bad.

I agree with you on near everything, but I'd say the weapon system is pretty clever it's just not applicable to people who don't enjoy difficulty. As for the story, I disagree 100%, I get that there wasn't a dark past twist but there was a reveal as to what exactly that past was and it sets up the original scene very well.

Not a criticism on either channel but interesting to see both views on liking or disliking the story in your review and NitroRads review of the game.

origins is actually good, I think a lot of people miss on it because it was the first one from a different studio. But it really captures the vibe and tone from the previous games, even more than SH4.

All that needs to be heard about Downpour (especially the story not making any sense whatsoever) has already been said by Twin Perfect. People hate them for putting the blame on Tomm Vin Huvaltski (which is deserved, don't kid yourselves) for this and having the gall to be sure about things regarding Silent Hill as a franchise (what a crime, eh ?), but their analysis and tearing down of it is aaaaabsolutely magnificent. The best video on KZfaq regarding the subject. Two hours just go by in an instant, it's that entertaining, can't recommend it enough.

In the part at 7:54 When I was in the house I got attacked by an invisible woman at least from what I remember. Definitely a rememberable experience (could've been because I was in the house to long, but there was an ghost like enemy)

1:05- Tomm Hulett said he wasn't in charge of every single creative decision a lot after the game flopped and he told everyone he was head producer. No anger here, just pointing it out. Even your positive remarks play out over jank footage. Downpour is a poor implementation of UE3, especially with those frame drops (you noted this at the end). Texture pop in, freezing, game crashes- this was all even worse when the game launched, though it's still pretty bad. People can say what they like about the story (it retcons itself depending on what ending you get), but the UI and technical aspects of Downpour are just... mediocre. Didn't care for the game at all but not enough to flame everybody's fave producer Tom Hulett for it like some did. Honestly, I preferred- though still hated- Homecoming.

The void was the only thing that really bummed me out in this game. It's not fun or scary to run away from it every 15 minutes, it's just fucking annoying!
