These games desperately need a remake, or at the very least an HD collection. Yosuke Saito did say there was a strong possibility of Nier getting remastered if Automata did well (which it did, thankfully), so hopefully SE can do something with the Drakengard games too.

All Drakengard games should be remastered or remake at some point.

You bring up a great point. Taro's writing implies a LOT on implication, which is why his games are so intrusive to the mainstream (even with Nier Automata). Taro's games are one of the few examples of "games for veteran gamers" . The kind of games you can only appreciate after playing through a myriad of other games. Taro not only directs his commentary on human nature, society and such, but also to video games, gamers and gaming medium as well.

The Drak 3 DLC gives some good background on the sisters and helps understand details from the main game. Like why 4 is a virgin and why 2 is an empty potato In her first boss fight.

Drakengard 2 was pretty alright from what I played, I felt the same way about the game as a whole as you did. while the gameplay is improved, it also sacrifices what the made original interesting and engagin plot wise. The third one was really fun, both story and gameplay wise despite it chugging a lot of the time. it's probably my 2nd favorite game by Yoko Taro.

I was so glad to see this on my sub feed! Drakengard 2 and 3 are two sequels I love (less so 2) despite themselves. 2 is majorly disappointing when compared to the series it hails from, yet I enjoyed my play through of it and I like how they wrapped up Caim’s story. Drakengard 3 is a frustrating, obtuse, impenetrable narrative at times (plus despite better gameplay it feels like the games falling apart as you play it) yet at the same time it’s beautiful in a twisted way, unique and completely original. Plus I feel like there are a lot of undertones and ideas in Drakengard 3 that a lot have missed or not really analysed. Like how the sisters seem to mirror elements of mental health and the games narrative seems to echo this struggle with depression. Either way Drakengard is a series that never fails to be unique even if it’s quality is always up and down. Enjoyed your review as always man!

Drakengard 2 is worth playing because it'll stimulate your imagination into coming up with way more interesting stuff

Drakengard 2 was an OK game that could've been better had they hired a competent writer to take a look at it. If Nowe had just opened his mouth and explained himself, the story could've been *significantly* shorter. Drakengard 3 kinda suffers from the opposite, most of the time, you're fighting the camera and the framerate when it comes to making precise platforming jumps in later Verses of the game. Oh, and *fuck that sequence near the end* , you might as well play a video on KZfaq to give you a hand with that. It was a great homage and a funny reminder of Yoko Taro messing with our expectations! I hope to see what you'll have to say about Nier sometime soon!

If someone wants to play Drakengard 3 + the DLCs that expand the story of each sister (that cost like 30€ in total) I'd advise you to play it on RPCS3 (the emulator for the Playstation 3), so you can play it with better framerate (but some dragon fights are still pretty bad, especially against Gabriel) and completely FREE! I personally played through the base game on my PS3, while I played the DLCs on the emulator, I even tried to get the true ending but after losing 20 times at a rhythm game because of the game's terrible framerate I gave up and looked it up on youtube. I love you Yoko Taro, but I also want to slap you.

About Drakengard 3, I really liked the game, but I followed the scrawl, all the reviews I saw were negative, I still bought and loved it.

I dig the Drek 3's character art maan. For me it's worth a rental it cause it's seems cool but too jank for me. Also, one of the endings has a fake difficulty rhythm game. Have you seen Demolition D's video on this game? I hear the translation is hammed up.

Great review! your feelings towards draken are similar to what i have with onimusha series, played the first game, it was ok, very simple, but ok, then...i had to go through the second one, man that was hard, i really wanted to play the third one haha, basically i end up stopping second game very near of the ending, but when a got at the third game..well it wasn't what i expected, sure its better than the old ones, but still very simple, i was hopping to have something like ninja gaiden black or even genji. My playthrough of draken lasted until i realized that it was some sort of musou game with dragons, so i basically skiped the entire franchise, but after watching this video, the third one kind interested me, not the gameplay cause it still too much musou to me hahah but the story seems fun, watch all those different character interacting etc.

Man, I really like Yoko Taro's work, but I can't help but feeling like us baka gaijins never get to see the whole picture of it because of the complementary material he does (the stuff like novels, mangas and even theatre plays). Like I can understand how it'd be a bit difficult to include that information in the games, but it sucks to miss out on stuff. Luckily, Drakengard 3's novel actually got translated and bundled with the special edition of the game and (iirc) we're getting the NieR Automata novel as well. Also, would you say Drag-On Dragoon 2... kinda drags on? *drum roll*
