Some thoughts on the approach which made rapha one of the greatest Quake duellers of all time.

I doubt Thorin read the comments, but there's one more thing about Rapha that Thorin didn't emphasize: Rapha was American. He was the best when there was literally no one to practice against in NA. The only person he could play was dahang, but you can't play the same person forever. Rapha would play literally anyone, because he knew that any practice was better than no practice. The EU players could always find a high level duel, but Rapha was forced to play essentially by himself. You always hear progamers from NA complain that they can't get enough practice by living in NA, but that never stopped Rapha. He was a true inspiration. The clip of Rapha breaking down his IEM4 win against Cooller is amazing - he mind games so well and is so humble about his achievements.

Rapha learned a lot from zero4

I also forgot to mention sparks :( I think the point still stands that there wasn't as much high level competition back in the day.

Chance as well. Although there's a strong argument for him bringing those players up to his level moreso than he benefitted from the practice. DaHang was always a bit better vs Rapha than he was against anyone else.

BillyMaysRIP tbh he played against me so, you know, i think i made him who he is
@KevinFlanneryForever9 жыл бұрын
BillyMaysRIP respect. Rapha was brilliant, and that IEM4 breakdown is a perfect example of peeling back the curtains to see what was really going on. in game he was incredibly impressive, i remember watching him on the quake-live.tv king of the hill evenings (tuesdays or thursdays?) just running through opponent after opponent with an attention to detail that couldn't be matched. Rapha was timing all the items, all the weapons, controlling the map and bullying his opponents into disadvantaged positions. and that was the way he played the pro game as well. it was truly exciting to watch, and the style he employed was similar enough to cooler that when they met the matchups were incredibly tense.

same here, but his videos make me watch some quake tournaments and im fcking impressed with skill these players have( fast, smart, godlike aims)...

Both of you should watch some old tourneys. QuakeCon, IEM, DH and maybe even older than that. It's highly entertaining and fairly easy to follow/understand. Players you might wanna look out for are rapha, cypher, cooller, noctis, avek, toxjq, evil, strenx, dahang, stermy. I think that's a good chunk of the tier 1 & 2 scene of the last couple of years. Probably missed a handful of players, but the top 3 is there. And if you want to see the best quaker in the world, there's of course always James Harding Kappa

sapphiregoku Then play it! Getting into Quake isn't as hard as you think and its much more rewarding winning a duel than winning a lane in a moba/winning a clutch in csgo, this is coming from someone who played both the latter at a decent level

from what i've seen, and asked from rapha. i take it like this, rapha has created a basis of decision making that revolves around picking up an equal or more amount of armor and health as the damage he deals and takes. all of his damage if not free damage, goes towards the purpose of taking items afterwards. all of those positional decisions rapha makes most of the time is to zone players out and slow them down from picking up the next item or two. it would be my guess, that is where the whole 5 moves ahead thing comes from. he is a master at putting opponents out of position. a chess mind rather than an aimer.

If you didn't already watch it, watch reflections with rapha.. he talks a lot about decision making and mindset, practice methodology and so on.. its great rapha has taken a while longer than avg to fully adapt to the deeper Quake Champions meta that has far more variables to consider at any given time, but he is my pick for QuakeCon duel 2018. DaHang was incredible at DHW and his aim especially his rockets were just too much in the semi, and he absolutely destroyed in the final.. as did TL in the Sacrifice final.. but rapha has had the time now to find his Quake Champions game.. still item/map control based meta but with far more in real time to evaluate. His aim let him down a bit last year which I believe is down to mental capacity, the higher load on his mind to play his game.. now he is so comfortable and makes such great calls in 2v2.. it seems almost certain rapha and dahang will take 2v2 they are so dedicated and have explored so many team composition options in scrims on all the maps.. they rarely lose, there was one map in a BO5 2v2 tourney a couple of weeks ago lol and dahang had a terrible start and didn't play as disciplined in the fights he took early.. they still came back to only narrowly lose that map and go 3-1.. NA-only tournament but from how dominant they are in NA there will only be a few teams that pose any threat.. the comms are #1 and they have shown many times how well they can adapt quickly and make the most of little edges and turn a close game into a big streak and end up winning by a big margin.. often say 20-15 or 20-20 game ends up being 50-35 or wider gap through such optimized teamwork, they play really disciplined in bad situations and get back control etc.. most of all they don't get complacent or let their egos take over.. they are always looking to improve and work on any mistakes :) You can probably tell if am SO HYPED for QuakeCon.. its going to be such a stacked field.. new format with pick/ban system (not sure which modes) and apparently CTF will be played.. probably be very raw and have some issues but the development going forward will benefit so much from the best players and teams playing and giving feedback

Shane and his dad used to play ra3 together. When his dad died in an accident, Shane was devastated and made a blood oath on his fathers grave to become the greatest Quake player in history. That's why he's so good. It's not for money, not for pride, not even for the love of the game. It's for honoring his father who loved Quake and taught him all his Quake skills.

@justinenks-laron27897 жыл бұрын
KARTIKEYA007 It's real you shitlord. His dad used to play under the ra3 name 800lb gorilla and shane used to play under |< Scar because of the scar on his face. You don't know anything about the scene or Shane.
@KARTIKEYA0077 жыл бұрын
Justin Enks The only reality is that his dad died. He did not make a blood oath or anything. Talk to him personally instead of barking here. I love it how he made a " blood oath" but then switched to OW the moment it came up.. He hasn't even spent too much time with quake, he has studied quake, not played it much. Thats why many people can kill him in 1on1 engagements on equal stacks. He is not considered a top pick in any game mode outside of duel due to his average fighting abilities. If quake did not have duel, you probably would not have heard of rapha as he constantly has lost FFA and other game mode tourneys due to poor aim. His study of quake makes him a great duel player however as duel is all about decisions.
@justinenks-laron27897 жыл бұрын
KARTIKEYA007 Stop pretending to know what you are talking about. What are you gonna say about raphas clan arena QuakeCon tournament win with demex and clock? Or his many impressive wins in CTF. Fuck, stop replying to me, you are obviously some shitter newb that doesnt know the scene.

Great video, I wanted to write that you forgot to mention coollers timing and cycling and having this (as strenx said) pac man control, or that you forgot to mention the escape routes and plans of Rapha or that Rapha watched a lot of demos to get in the heads of his opponents but at the half of the video but you said it all. You nailed it. But when talking about all this quake legends you forgot to mention evil and spacial evils duels with Rapha. Still great video and I agree on everything you said and yes raphas way of playing quake deserves recognition. He a legend in quake. He played it in such a new unique style.

I would like a video about Evil and his way of playing. His style reminds me of Av3k in the way he can outskill even top players, but he also has a smarter approach in taking fights. Fazz described him as a confident aimbot.

tbh...rapha’s rockets are some of the best rockets to ever touch quake. you talk about how he’d be clutch, he’d hit a that bounces an opponent out of position or just minimize the opponents stack just enough m. also rapha’s movement is also one of the best. a part of how he positioned himself, he’d also fluidly get from point a to point b just fast enough to take people off guard. yes rapha’s game was mental but don’t act like his mechanics were rubbish
@KARTIKEYA0077 жыл бұрын

Possibly irrelevant comment inc, but how would you rank the likes of Cooller or Cypher against f0rest or Neo, or Flash and Jaedong, or Faker and Mata? Basically what I'm asking is if you were to make a list of the top esports professionals of all time, what players and from what game would you put at the very top?
@Khorney9 жыл бұрын
When you compare players for different games it becomes a popularity contest. So the only thing you can compare are their accomplishments. I only know of one serious vote for the greatest gamer ever, and that was on ESReality, where SlayerS_'BoxeR, won it. But this was in 2004, so things might have changed :)

Would you agree it was never a good idea for the maps not to have proper names? It forces everyone to learn code names instead. Does any other game even have that :P And now the old-school guys all still use them as if they still didn't have actual names a lot of the times.
@simovihinen8759 жыл бұрын
yeah they have proper names now BUT because old schoolers are still using the old ones you're still gonna get lost. ofc they have an easy time remembering which one is which because they used to see the name so much and associate it with the map.

Rapha, while being a genius, played too slow for my taste. Even I would get annoyed by how he kept avoiding situations. I always enjoyed his casting though, he had great insights into every game he was discussing. Looking forward to more quake videos!

Playing slow and defensively has always the unsual approach. It was the same with Thresh, never lost a tournament, yet some people disliked his playstyle.

Correction, he is the smartest player of all time! Although I agree with BillyMaysRIP on most of his points, but EG wasn't any push over and they are Americans, right? So it is not that the shelf was empy, just not as many very highl level skilled players. If Dahang didn't get so nervous, he might could have been the best of the bunch! Rapha is the Bobby Fischer of Quakelive, with the added ingredient of Garry Kasparov! Back in the day, I swear Rapha use to visit some of the NA servers and play with 5 different nicks, on five different dual servers and play 5 different opponents at the same time! Anyhoo...Thortin's Thoughts are all pretty spot on with his analyses...Keep up the good work!
