Sometimes you think you're doing what's best for your bike by taking it to a trusted mechanic. But this is where you realize that if something is done by a person, there is always room for human error. This beautiful bike came in from out of town, before it is placed on the Dyno, everything was inspected!!! Unfortunately, the chain seem secure, but it was not. Something we did not realize until after moving it over 100 mph! Everyone in this video is OK and fortunately it happened in a secure location instead of on the streets!

You reminded me of my first performance upgrades. I had a Sears go kart in 1972 with a Tecumseh 3 1/2 HP. I swapped the muffler with a straight plumbing pipe and swapped the spring on the throttle with a piece of coat hanger wire. Those were days of fun. In a church parking lot a police officer drove in and I asked him if he would measure my speed with his radar and he did! I thought it would do 60 (I was nine). After passing by a couple times he reported 24 mph. lol

Back in the day our racing karts run engines with a rotary valve intake, meaning the carb was on the side instead of the front unlike the reed intake. One time the chain broke off and cut the carb's neck clean, I found the carb hanging on the side from the fuel line and throttle cable. I'm just happy the chain guard is there doing it's job, it's an important one, it's not just for picking up the grime.

Unbelievable! 😮 The first thing I thought was a pushrod through the engine block. This exactly looks like my lawnmower did and the whole corner piece of the block has vanished. On the other hand, thank God everyone was okay. Being a "Jill of all trades" and an RN, any exploding metal is a little grenade going off. This could have been deadly. What if it wasn't the chain and something thicker/heavier? That is why the Dyno machines at bike rallies have a taped off area with signs. Very dangerous.

10 bucks says the chain was too tight. Many people don't realize that a motorcycle chain tightens as the swingarm moves upward. Extending the swingarm by 6-8 inches not only lengthens the chain but also amplifies the degree to which it stretches. Additionally, the increased swingarm length also decreases the weight required to compress the rear suspension. Add these two together and with enough torque... POP.

I had a chain literally shatter once on me. Got me in the ass crack. Had a little 3" scab where you could very clearly see it was a chain lol. Thats chain rash. When it happened i saw the shadow of the chain in pieces then felt the fire. I was scared to inspect waiting for a pool of blood to hit my shoes. Was near the house so i went home had girl check it and luckily was just a lil rash

Clip style or rivited, makes ZERO difference in this situation. The most common cause of drive chain breakage IS metal failure. The usual culprit being a simple single drop of battery acid on one side plate. It causes a change in the tensile strength or temper of the steel and the link becomes soft. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Hth.

I've seen a lot of crazy things happen to bikes on dynos over the years! We had a bikenight where a guy with a portable dyno came every friday, so people came from all around to see what their bikes would do. Harley's with plug in tuners, to split cranks would go there to show out. Thing is, those bikes are being pushed harder than most of em ever are on the street, so shit grenades!
