Texas was once a country. Before that a state in Mexico. Before that part of New Spain. And before that claimed by different Native American tribes. How did it become a state of the U.S.? Well it all started with the Texas Revolution.

It was actually the U.S. Congress and President John Tyler who had signed the resolution to admit Texas as a State and then presented the resolution to Texas President Anson Jones who brought it before the Texas Congress. This was just months after the Treaty of Cueva-Smith, signed 19 May 1845, between the Mexican Republic and the Republic of Texas, in which the Mexican government had agreed to recognize Texas' independence on the condition that the Republic of Texas remains an independent nation, instead of joining the United States or the British Empire.

Fun fact: Texans call it the Texas Revolution. Mexicans call it the War of Northern Aggression. I think the Texas Revolution gets grouped together with the US Mexican War under this name (I could be wrong on this point). At any rate, the US annexed Texas in 1845, and we almost immediately provoked a war with Mexico by moving troops into the disputed area. When that was ended in 1848, the US annexed basically the northern half of Mexico. That was called the Mexican Cession. Here is a good video about all of this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/brtpqcWL3Ky-fGg.html&ab_channel=HISTORY

Although I realize this is an extremely condensed version of the reasons for Texas Independence which necessarily omits many facts, the facts that remain are skewed at best. Stephen F. Austin was indeed born in Virginia, but he was raised in Missouri and considered himself as such. I also have a real problem with your caricature of him: he was always clean shaven, whereas you have him looking like a conquistador. The colonization of Texas was not his idea, but that of his father, Moses Austin, who died in 1821 before he could realize this dream and asked his son to see it through. The Mexican Constitution of 1824 was written in such a way to allow the colonists certain freedoms they enjoyed in the US, mainly because outlawing slavery, for example, would not be profitable for the Government's new reliance of cotton. Your video makes it seem as though Texas colonists wanted to be a part of the USA from the start (key word there), which is false. By the time the Texas Revolution got underway, Zacatecas and other regions of Mexico were also revolting against the increasing tyranny of Santa Anna. Austin was very diplomatic on his trips to visit officials in Saltillo (the government of Texas was removed from San Antonio to Saltillo when Santa Anna felt Texas should be a part of Coahuila, which was another complaint) and Mexico City, he was met both willingly and as a traitor, even though he was following the Constitutional law and the agreements of colonization. Also, as mentioned below, the Alamo was a failure, even though it bought time, that was not the intent. Sam Houston sent Bowie to the Alamo with orders to destroy it after Neill defeated Cos at the Seige of Bexar in December 1835. Neill convinced Bowie it would make a great defense. The Republic of Texas declared Independence on March 2, 1836, while the Alamo fell on the 6th. On April 21, 1836, Texas won its independence by defeating Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Republic of Texas survived 9 difficult and turbulent years, largely due, in my opinion, to presidential term lengths which were limited to two then three years, but no immediate succession. Sam Houston and Mirabeau Lamar were as different as Obama and Trump, imagine back-to-back short terms like this and one would understand the mess. This situation and similar ones went on for nine years of Texas being a recognized republic by virtually everywhere but Mexico. Texas needed a fix, and although the long standing idea was Texas' admittance to the Union is well known, Andrew Jackson wanted no part of it as it would allude (rightly) that he wanted Texas all along, so when Polk became president, Texas soon became a state.

@@JKHero Although the majority of Southerners didn't own slaves, they supported slavery. They loved slavery. This is because they believed that one day, they thought they would own slaves as well. Sounds a lot like the modern-day republican, don't you think? Even though the republican isn't rich himself, he still thinks that low taxes can improve his life in the short-term. Any high school education and economics course will teach you that this isn't true. It can be decades before low taxes on the rich can produce benefits for society.

@@cloudmafia -- You wrote a big jumble of falseness. It was the Republican party which ended slavery in the U.S. Low taxes can improve life in both the short-term and the long-term. However, much depends on the efficiency of government. Vermont has a much higher tax rate than New Hampshire, but Vermont provides its citizens with about the same benefits that New Hampshire provides. However, Venezuela has a huge tax rate and provides much less benefits to its citizens. Neither high taxes nor low taxes are desirable when the government is inefficient.

Thought Monkey -- Your intro suggests that the U.S. controlled all of North America north of Mexico. What happened to Canada? What happened to the Lakota, Cheyenne, Comanche, Apache, Ute, etc ? Your writing in your intro shows the Aztecs as being displaced by the Toltecs, who were displaced by the Mayans, who were displaced by the Olmecs. That's backwards. And, it doesn't really relate much to Texas, except that the Aztecs invaded Mexico from the north (so maybe ((?)) they came from or through Texas). An introduction to Texas history should mention the Caddo, Tonkawa, Karankawa, Hueco, Coahuiltecans, Bidai, Jumano, Apache, etc. Then it should mention the movement of the Spanish into the area from the south while the Comanche were moving into the area from the north. At 0:30 -- The history did not "all start" in 1821. Moses Austin received permission from Spain to bring colonists into Tejas before Mexico won its independence from Spain. The folks living in Tejas supported the revolt and expected to be better off with Mexican independence. I think that Mexico did not start with a Federalist form of government. I think that was put into place by the Constitution or 1824. At 1:00 -- No, let's again remember that Spain had already started a program to increase the population in Texas. At 1:25 -- Stephen Austin spent most of his life in Missouri, under Spanish rule. I doubt that he would have called himself a Virginian. At 1:30 -- Austin was the first empresario, but not the only one. Mexico commissioned 24 empresarios to promote the colonization of Texas. Do you really believe that Austin by himself brought in 10,000 American settlers? And, why did you not mention the Irish colony around Victoria? And, why did you not mention the many immigrants from Germany, England, Scotland, Wales, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, etc.? At 1:35 -- You insinuate that the Tejano population was "not white." Much of it came from Europeans who had moved through Mexico to Texas. Some of it had moved into Texas directly from the Canary Islands. Most of it was a mix of European and Native American parentage, as most Mexicans are today. They have many different shades of skin color, and some of them are "white." You also ignore the colony of Cherokee who had moved into Texas from the southern Appalachians. The Mexican government did not invite the Cherokee into Texas, but made no effort to remove them. At 2:30 -- In 1835, after Santa Anna repudiated the Constitution of 1824, Texas (and many other parts of Mexico) declared loyalty to the Constitution of 1824 and refused to accept Santa Anna as president/dictator. You are correct that the Texicans forced all Mexican military units out of Texas in 1835. However, do you really believe that they forced the Mexican military "all the way back to Mexico City" ? That would have required a long chase lasting a few months over a tremendous stretch of Mexico. At 2:50 -- Most of the rebels in the Alamo had been in Texas since at least 1830. They had moved to Texas and taken Mexican citizenship. Some were recent arrivals, but some of them had been born in Texas -- with names such as Abamillo, Badillo, Espalier, Esparza, Fuentes, Guerrero, Losoya, Nava, and Seguin. At 3:10 -- Texas did not win its independence from Mexico at the Alamo. That happened at San Jacinto, about six weeks later. At 3:15 -- The U.S. did not claim Texas as a result of its 1846-1848 war with Mexico. Texas had already maintained itself as an independent nation for almost ten years. Texas signed a treaty which merged itself into the U.S. After the war, the U.S. purchased from Mexico the land between the Rio Grande and the Pacific Ocean. However, that's a different topic, not really a part of Texas history.

At about 1:40-1:50, you stated that the Mexican population was less than half of the white Anglo population. While you didn't exactly say it, your wording suggests that the Mexican population was all brown and the Anglo population was all white. Please remember that part of the "Mexican" population included immigrants from the Canary Islands and from Spain -- not exactly "brown" folks. Just as today, some Mexicans are white, and most are a mixture of Native American and European. Also please remember that the "Anglo" population was not fully Anglo. Of the Texians who died at the Alamo, 29 were born in Europe, including a few from Denmark, Germany, and Spain. And, how do classify folks like Greenbury B. Logan and Hendrick Arnold? Arnold was a free black man who was one of the scouts for the Texian force which drove the Mexican garrison out of San Antonio in 1835. Logan was a free black man who was wounded in that battle, and Texas gave him 640 acres (one square mile) for his service. Both of these men spoke English (Anglo), but they weren't white. Arnold was a son-in-law of Erastus Smith, who like Jim Bowie, had married a Tejano (Texas-Mexican) woman. I promise you that those two men were not the only Anglos to marry Tejano women. Furthermore, your wording suggests that the Mexican population in Texas was loyal to Mexico. However, some of the men who died in the Alamo had names such as Abamillo, Badillo, Espalier, Esparza, Fuentes, Guerrero, Losoya, and Nava. Those are not Anglo names. Also, Juan Seguin's unit at San Jacinto was all Spanish-speaking Tejanos who fought for Texas independence from Mexico. The Vice-President of the Texas government during the revolution was Lorenzo de Zavala -- again, not an Anglo Texan. In summary, the Texas Revolution was much more complex than a simple Mexican vs Anglo conflict.
@emmanuelake421
@emmanuelake421 4 жыл бұрын
It was a conflict between dark Hispanic people against white European people who wanted slavery, Lorenzo de Zavala had Mayan slaves in the Yucatan peninsula, the republic of yucatan was a well of slavery at that time like Texas, in both countries those who governed were direct descendants of Europeans who wanted to enslave inferior "races".

@@emmanuelake421 -- Your comment is really shallow. Some of the men who died in the Alamo had names such as Abamillo, Badillo, Espalier, Esparza, Fuentes, Guerrero, Losoya, and Nava. Those are names of brown Tejanos, not white folks. At San Jacinto, Juan Seguin commanded a unit of the Texian army in which every member spoke Spanish, not English. Those were brown Tejanos, not white folks. Hendrick Arnold was a free black man who was one of the scouts for the Texian force which drove the Mexican garrison out of San Antonio in 1835. Greenbury B. Logan was a free black man who was wounded in that battle, and Texas gave him 640 acres (one square mile) for his service. Both of these men spoke English (Anglo), but they weren't white or brown. They were black. Texians who supported the revolution against Mexico's 15-year rule of Texas came in several colors. The common denominator for them was their intense dislike of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna deciding to repudiate Mexico's Constitution of 1824 and declare himself dictator.

June 9, 2021. An article in TIME magazine spells out the erroneous perception of the Alamo as a symbol of freedom. Texas maintains that myth to legitimize its existence and its current status quo. The loss of Texas would inevitably bring about that of New Mexico and the Californias and little by little our territory would be diminished until it was reduced to an insignificant expression, our existence as a nation bought with so much blood would end as those weak meteors, which from time to time shine and disappear into the sky.

@@albertoornelas975 I think the passage of time has blurred many of the details from that time. The Tejanos appreciated the Texians for their fighting ability which was used in finally defeating and abolishing Comanche raids. The two communities supported each other, and were not viewed as distinct from each other as they were so intertwined. The Tejanos wanted more liberalized demcracy in Mexico and Santa Anna betrayed all of them. the Tejanos knew that decisions for Tejas could not be effectively made down in Mexico City. So both groups wanted SANTA ANNA out of the house, not each other. Tejanos accepted union with the USA after some time because going back into a Mexian centralize state was worse in their view. This is why Yucatan took so long to rejoin Mexico. Until the demon of Santa annawas removed, they didnt want to chance being ruled by a madman drunk on power. A better analogy is you invite me over to help you defend you family from a local drug gang. I come over and help with that, but that act of helping you caused my wife to get a restraining order and file for divorce. Then you let me stay till I work things out with my wife or get a job. I got the job and then you and your family decide to rent a room out to me. No one is exploiting the other. It is mutual benefit. This used to be understood before the Cultural Marxists started spreading their diabolical lives to divide wife against husband, children against parents, neighbor against neighbor and employer against worker.

@@richardcheek2432 this almost sounds like the black legend of Spain and the American empire, I understand that at that time there was political instability in Mexico, but at that time let me remind you what you want were the immigrants, the Anglo-Saxons entered Texas as undocumented immigrants, and It was obvious that the Anglos wanted to expand, it was already known that their politicians had wanted to continue expanding for a long time, since they could not expand further north because the English, their Anglo-Saxon brothers, did not leave in the war of 1812 that they even burned their capitol, they turned to seeing a republic in diapers like Mexico was, taking advantage of that they started with settlers in Texas, after that, when the war broke out in 1846, those from the Bear Republic wanted to do the same in California, I understand that there were many factors that Mexico lost the war in which he had a lot of guilt, but I return to the same thing the expansionist yankees and their manifest destiny and the monrroe doctrine, what They would already seize several places, that's how an empire was born, no way did Mexico lose, I have nothing against the Americans, but if their politicians, the Anglo-Saxons only think of war seize more territory of more things around the world world, the English were always a headache for the Spanish empire, and their children, the Americans, are now the owners of the world, the Yankees have the same blood as the English, they will always be the common enemy of Hispanic people, it does not matter as they disguise themselves behind smoke screens, but they will always be the common enemy of Hispanidad. abusive disrespectful people and bad milk, we gave texas to the americans, after having welcomed them in our dinner, they destroyed us!

European, Americans, Native Americans, Spanish were all part of a much bigger situation that involved Florida and territories out West. Mexico was in turmoil and under a petty dictator. Juan Santos Echevarria There is no legal basis for a state to secede from the union. The U.S. Constitution (A4s3) has a procedure for adding new states or subdividing existing states--both require Congress to consent. But there is no procedure, at all, in the U.S. constitution for a state to secede. A state cannot legally leave the union. A group of states tried that once, it ended very badly for them.

@@JKHero This story is an urban legend. You can find the text of all these documents online: The Treaty of Annexation doesn't say anything about flags, and neither do the Ordinance of Annexation or the Joint Resolution for Annexing Texas to the United States. It's true that state flags (including Texas's) should be dipped to the US flag, but that's not the same thing as flying on different levels. Dipping is a momentary salute. The state flags are allowed to fly at the same level, but the US flag should be to the right. I'm happy to be proven wrong if you have conflicting sources. I had no idea what flag dipping was before today, so thank you for helping me learn something new!

Roger Enright the Americans would of just taken the land anyways, he’ll there were many rebellions in Texas before the revolution supported by the US. The Americans were there to populate the land not to kill off the Indians, Mexico was doing fine with the Indians and lived in relative peace with them especially the New Mexico and California Natives, the only ones with real problems against the Indians were the illegal American settlers. You can never trust an American.
@AJ-ks2qp

Roger Enright Santa Anna was in the right, he was not racist, he only treated the Texans badly because many Texans refused to follow Mexican laws by bringing in slavery, not assimilating, and bringing in more illegal Americans. If Mexicans fighting ability was so poor what happened to all the natives tribal warriors, or the French soldiers sent to occupy? Dead or ran back to their own country! Santa Anna could have easily defeated Houston had he not ran scared all the way to the US border to get help from the untrustworthy Americans. The prosperity was located south of the rio grande where more of the population was. If they were so good at building prosperity why did they have to run to such an “inferior” country to start a new life? Maybe because prosperity was found all over the new country up until droves of Illegal Americans took it all.

Roger Enright Roger Enright Roger Enright Roger “biased Mexicano opinion” but you just talked about your own biased American opinion. How about the the Mexican Troops at Puebla that were mostly irregular forces, poorly equipped, and outnumber defeated the worlds best Army at the time? The French were already losing fighting ability in the hot climate of central Mexico, many battles in the Southern States were already being won without US support which primarily helped the forces in the Northern Stated where there were less French soldiers stationed. The war would of been won either way since the US only started helping the last year of it. If you want to talk about high casualties against a smaller enemy let’s look at a Majority of civil war battles where Johnny Reb gave you a run for your money, Hell Lincoln had to remove so many Generals because of the shit fighting ability. How about the war of 1812 where the literal capital was burned down and Americans suffered 2x as many deaths than a enemy force half way around the world? If you want pathetic look at that. Americans were welcomed at first but when they began thinking they could do whatever they want like bringing in slaves and completely disregarding Mexican law many were no longer allowed. Especially after when Texan settlers began helping illegal Americans set up settlements across Northern Texas. William B Travis abandoned his life in the US, Crocket left after he lost the election, Americans were flocking to Mexican Texas for opportunity, but like always you can’t trust Americans. Houston was a coward . It wasn’t a fair fight when he had to run literally a few miles to the US border for supplies and soldiers, some of which were still in the US military. If he had faced General Urrea, or any of the other 3 Mexican Armies in Texas he would of lost. He screamed “All is lost” when Mexican prisoners were being escorted out of the battlefield, so that just goes to show how confident he was, he was a pussy just like the other Americans. He undoubtedly ran to the US border just Incase of a defeat he could flee across the border like the coward he is. The US military, like the Texans only attacked when Mexico was at its weakest. There was no cohesion in the chain of command. As well as baiting Mexico into war like the snakes they are. I have no delusion, Texas was following into disarray after the Revolution, it was going bankrupt, there were riots, it had to sell its only fleet. The coward Houston didn’t even deal with the Indians in battle, he made a peace treaty and they were only defeated when the US stepped in. You can believe what you want but the US and Texans at the time were all backstabbing cowards only attacking at the weakest time. Using any tricks to get what they wanted, no honor.

Roger Enright and it’s not like it matter anyways, the South Western states are becoming all Hispanic, within a few more decades, maybe in the 200 anniversary of the American invasion of Mexico, it will be 90% Hispanic.
