In this edition of Thoughts from the Kitchen Table I talk F1 - well Robert Kubica's incredible return to F1. But mostly I talk Rally Australia and look at why Ogier won this year and who might win next year!

Thank you Mr Clark for all the kind words about Robert! Big respect for you as you were always supporting him in rallies and admiring his determination. For me it is something special because many (most?) of British journalists and British fans of WRC/F1 are rather not so much in love with RK. I hope Russel and Kubica will bring back Williams where it belongs. And I hope that after some good years in F1 and winning some races (championship?) Robert will come back to WRC!

I'm from Poland and I have never followed WRC until Kubica started taking part in it. I am a F1 follower since 2007 (since Kubica joined), so also because of him. But even though Kubica is no longer in WRC, I still follow WRC, because I fell in love with it. I even like it more than F1 nowadays. I went to Wales for the past 3 years to see it live. Amazing sport. And when Kubica was in WRC in 2014 & 2015, I knew that his objective was not to stay there, but to return to F1 someday. And boy, how I enjoyed him pushing the car to the limit and winning stages once a while - epic. At the time I didn't realise, that the joy that I'm experiencing will only last 2 years, but while it lasted - it was awesome. And also to see the F1 driver's convertion and struggles while trying to compete in WRC. And aside from Kubica's adventures in WRC, I was watching the other drivers tackling gravel, snow and tarmac - unreal. Those guys are simply from another planet. I'm glad that I've been introduced to this amazing sport through Kubica, and I still watch it now on WRC+ All Live throughout every round, even though Kubica is no longer in WRC. And to hear it being commentated by Mr. Clark with such passion and details, it makes it even more enjoyable. Murray Walker of the modern WRC for sure. Counting days to Monte Carlo already.

Thankyou to you and the rest of the WRC live team. You've helped me stay sane whilst I recover from a broken back. I haven't been a great fan of Australia, always thought it was more about getting to the end of season barbie. This years was awesome, not because of the drivers battle, but because of the weather. If moving its place in the schedule could guarantee rain then that should be done, then we could have Wales back where it should be. Only, what, 58 days to Monte, can't wait. Happy Christmas and a very merry New Year.

Very nice kitchen table again, Colin. I will also say this: Ogier showed in Australia why he is a 6 time champ. He knew what he had to do and he kept his head cool when everyone else were losing theirs, especially on sunday, whith the conditions as bad as they were. You said in a recent episode that experience counts more in rallying than in other sports, and I think Seb showed that here again. I think Thierry has been struggeling leading the championship. I feel like whenever he is the hunted he doesn’t perform the way he can. Take Sardegna, where he was championship leader going into the event. He struggled on the first day in the rain, and others were leading. Then on saturday once he was behind Ogier, he was suddenly the hunter, and that’s when he started to take stage wins and was able to take up the fight. Whenever he has been out front in the championship he has been out of sorts, and I think he cracked under the pressure. Tanak for sure will be very strong next year. On his day, no one can beat him. No one, not even his team mates. But I think again his lack of experience compared to Seb and Thierry showed, especially with the incidents in Portugal, Sardegna, Wales and Catalunya. In some ways he is the Verstappen of WRC, forcing the issue even when he doesn’t have to. I think Australia was a fantastic event, and I can’t help but think they are shooting themselves in the foot criticising the location, and suggesting clearly impossible options. Australia is a fantastic event, and Coffs is the perfect location. I loved watching it, even if it meant sitting up all night back here in Europe.

I recently moved to AUS in 2015 from the USA and was extremely excited to have rally in my home soil. Unfortunately the spectating experience is very poor. I did not even attend this year and decided to spectate Rally Finland and Portugal as they are a lot better for spectators. I think the hardcore fans will not show up to Rally Australia due to the horrible spectating areas. Too much red tape.... I'll give my money to the people in Finland. Very excited for 2019. Great podcast as always!

Well I'm very lucky to live only an hour and a half away from Coffs Harbour. I understand why people are getting annoyed with the time zone problem but us Australians have this time zone problem with almost every round. The problem with the lack of spectators attending the event is purely down to the fact that here in Australia there simply isn't that many diehard rally fans and hopefully the event and the expose that's given through the event will hopefully change that.

For me the problem with the australian event is the timezone :) I live in europe so it's very difficult to keep up with all the live action since there are 3 days in a row starting at 9pm that go almost till dawn. This year the championship was decided there, so the struggle to stay awake was harder.

Not every type of driver can help the manufacturer get the car better. The driver really needs to understand and deliver the most useful information on the functioning of car. So, it is not up to manufacturers only, once we are past hiring the best driver for that job.

Cannot agree more that the pressure on Hyundai is huge. Have Hyundai and Thierry lost there window of opportunity to the clever Ogier and MSport? Are Toyota about to become the dominant force ib WRC, like VW was? I hope not. Will MSport win a race next year? I doubt it. Will Ogier repeat as 2019 Champ? Toyota and Tanak will have much too say about this. Can Meeke, Paddon, Sordo and Mikkelson win another WRC event? The competition is fierce. I don't think Australia should be last race of the year. WRC should have 3-4 former/retired drivers in 2016 sepc WRC cars run ahead of the WRC pros on gravel rally to lessen the road cleaning effect that so often decides the outcome of the rally.

I dont think there is so many work to do on the I20. Of course Neuville struggling with the car setup, but he faced something that not any driver has faced last years, Open the road. And for sure everybody are ignoring Latvala, but something that confuse me, is all these experts not mention the road position importance nowadays. With this 17" cars, road cleaning never had so many importance on the pace of each driver. Loeb has won on Catalunya bla bla bla.. so what? Breen and Ostberg were on the lead on the final of the first leg on Australia. Without nothing to loose, could choose an tyre compound that the other crews can´t bet. And the C3 on tarmac always was competitive. I like to see more drivers on "Ogier world", like we saw Neuville this year. Then maybe i can agree with some statements about drivers with an advantage that looks to start crucial on some events. Sordo with 10 rounds for 2019 could help a lot Neuville, like he had done this year and Mikkelsen. About Mikkelsen, well. Would be nice if Hyundai could give more attention to him. That could be accepted on M-Sport, but on Hyundai?! He was fast on some rounds, he deserve attention on his car. Then the Toyotas struggle only on one type of conditions, but there are only one or two rounds with that conditions. The rough and twisty gravel ones, like some part of Sardinia and Turkey. No doubt that on the rest they are one step ahead. Bringing back Acropolis could balance the Championship (even for fans, not about the cars) but money have always the first word. in fact, even the Celica always struggle on that conditions, like on Acropolis (last win 1990) or SanRemo, only when the surface was on tarmac. Auriol 1994. That could, like Colin says well, put an consistent driver looking for the title.. however i think the championship leaders will be alternate all season. As i mention early, the road position starts to be the hardest opponent and not even an great driver with an Yaris could beat that. What about the lack of privateers?! Huge problem that nobody want to talk.. it looks the WRC2 now is the seat for the "rest of the best"!

Colin everyone that knows you knows your favourite rally is Australia you would up your house and move tomorrow 😁 too bias I feel here.......also after tommi's interview it probably will get looked at after all who better to listen to then a former competitor now team principle ? On the JML thing I just don't see it and on the basis of I feel he's had his best chance at VW when they were blowing every team out the water I also haven't seen any other driver crack under the pressure like he has and I'm basing that on many years gone by not this season alone.hes gone through the whole mental coach thing and that didn't do a lot for him either .......look at tanak in the same car absolutely flying there's no question jari should have won more rally then his last which correct me if I'm wrong was Sweden before Australia? I am a JML fan also but I've just seen the pressure cooker get to him too much .

M-Sport Fiesta IS still on same level with others, I think it is time to stop talking this myth, what Ogier is saying to explain his slow pace. In last rally, yes Ogier had best nerves, both Neuville & Tänak failed with that. Neuville lost because that first title, Tänak didn't loose anything, except we saw again, in certain situations(especially new tense situations to him), he looses nerves and do mistakes. This possibly will be hard point for future and fighting for title.
@mosca3289

SiiliViin What I see is that Ogier arrived at a team that hadn’t been anywhere near the front and took victory in his first event for his new team and followed up with consecutive drivers titles in a manufacturer that hadn’t won that prize since 1981. Yes, it’s the driver that made the difference. Ogier is amazing.
@SiiliViin
@SiiliViin 5 жыл бұрын
@@mosca3289 You forget most important thing, 2017 when Ogier arrived, new era begun & new Fiesta is competitive, differently old Fiesta. Tänak struggled waiting first win, that prevent him to fight for title, but 2018 Tänak would been as fast as he was in Toyota with Fiesta.
@mosca3289

SiiliViin Well for sure Tanak is fast, maybe he’s the fastest now. But there’s more to winning a championship than that and Ogier has been the master of putting everything together. I’m looking forward to seeing them battle next year.
@SiiliViin
@SiiliViin 5 жыл бұрын
@@mosca3289 Some years ago Ogier was fastest, but not anymore for some years. He have same effect, what Schumacher had - being years team number one driver, he got lazy-rusty & top form went down as teammates were not allowed real fight. Tänak issue is also nerves. He satrted rallying in Estonia and at beginning he crashed a lot or break car. Then he got used that & start to win. Next he went abroad, where he continued same pattern, at first crashed a lot, until nerves settled, after that were usually fastest. Same is/was happening in wrc level. First win didn't come for long time, but after maiden win, he can fight for rally wins without issues. Now he have same problem with title fight, he do not have any & nerves go messed up. That first title nerves issue have also Neuville. Because Ogier have won already so many times, he do not have problems with nerves anymore & this is the benefit what last two years were his strength to get title, not speed. I think also, this was his last title.
