I lived there for 2years in the early 1950s. We played in the Japanese bunkers, dove off a bridge between Wake and Peale. The adults created a 9 hole golf course in the lagoon. It was called the Low Tide Country Club. There was a 2 room schoolhouse, a drive in, walk-in movie theater and a 20 watt radio station, WAKE. Good times!

I would just love to listen to a radio station like that from some far away remote island.

My KC-135 that I crewed in the late 1990s had a mission here. It was an awesome, yet lonely place to visit. I loved seeing the dark starry sky and hearing the ocean waves. A ton of crabs on the beach though. Our mission was to help a Turkish cargo ship that was battered on it's inside and we had a team of CG underwater welders and their equipment plus some scientists/engineers. Got a Humanitarian aid medal for that mission.

If DOD should reconsider Johnston atoll as possible military bases again. Be just like Wake islands. Runway is 9000 feet long. Plus ship docking, possible or buildings still standing as infrastructure. That islands has been a backup for years. Don't know if radiation is still there.

Wake Is is no longer open to the public. Its is a Detachment base of the 15 Air Wing USAF. You need prior permission to visit.

We touched down at Wake in 1960 on-board a Pan American 707-100, in transit to Tokyo out of SFO, just shy of the time (not sure exactly when) passenger traffic across the Pacific no longer required the pit-stop for fuel. IRC, PanAm started non-stop traffic to the Far East out of the U.S. west coast beginning with the 747's after the 1969 Trans-Pacific Route Case, c. 1970. So there are people still alive who (sort-of) remember when those fuel tanks were a sight for sore eyes. In dreams I see gun batteries defending our last exit to Manila in 1942.

Home sweet home ,1975 operation baby lift! Highest population on that rock since second world War. The Japanese guns and bunkers were still there, a six pack of bear and a lawn chair on the beach with no bugs. It was a little oasis.

In this video (2009) there are 3 large fuel tanks off to the left on Wilkes island - but in later years videos there are only 2. What/why happened to the third tank?

The US never reclaimed the island, instead using it for target practice and isolated it. Only after the war did the US reclaim the island.
