They scam unsuspecting victims across the globe - but they’re victims themselves. Thousands of people are trafficked worldwide into Myanmar's war-torn east, where they are forced to trick people in Europe, the US and China into scam schemes. At KK Park, one of the most notorious facilities, those who refuse risk torture and even murder. DW’s investigative unit went to the borderlands of Thailand and Myanmar to track down the perpetrators behind this multimillion-euro operation. Along the way, they uncovered a vast criminal network leading to a notorious Chinese Triad boss.

I am from Myanmar. 🇲🇲 I was tricked into working at a gambling website developer in Myanmar. They get their money from their networks in China. The company is in Myanmar company directory list, it's name is Tamron Technology. They rented two office lot in Yangon, Myanmar Plaza office tower. Aside from gambling websites I believe they also involve in romance scams and other illegal activities. The company heads are Myanmar born Chinese (mixed with Burmese ethnic people called Shan). They speak Chinese, so it's so easy for them to get in contact with illegal networks in China. 🇨🇳

As a Thai I would say that most people that got trafficked are job-seekers that got tricked to go work in Thailand but are actually kidnapped to Myanmar, not random tourists getting dragged off streets. However, the thoughts that people can be kidnapped anywhere here is definitely understandable as our government is doing very little to tackle this problem and not being serious about this issue enough to make tourists feel safe.

I don't think you understand what Interpol is. Interpol doesn't have any jurisdiction anywhere, it's not a law enforcement agency. It's role is more to share information and coordinate police of different countries with each other. It's not like in the movies where Interpol employees can make arrests and stuff like that. It's a powerless organization by design

When it comes to Human Trafficking, the likelihood of being kidnapped is less to none. Traffickers generally don't want any type of media coverage or police interference since kidnapping generates media coverage. I worked in one such compound. But I'm a dentist and they were desperately in need of one so I had much more freedom than most. Even then, my freedom was limited to inside the compound. I needed extensive reporting and waiting for a permit just to go out for a couple of hours a week. I didn't know the nature of their work before I went there but I figured everything out in my first month so I quit immediately although the pay was higher than I've ever made in my entire life (over $1200 in first month: which, for a country like myanmar, is ridiculously high income). they do not use traditional phones. All scam callcenters use services/software that work via the internet and then emulate basically any area code that works best. The only way to effectively fight this is by educating people and maybe by making the callsoftware providers liable, because some of those companies know very well that their software is used for fraudulent activity. But they do not care, because they do not face any legal repercussions. Also prohibitng corruption in those areas and actually punishing those criminals would work, but that is not gonna happen in those areas. There is a reason why call centers are located in certain areas, and it is not because everybody there is happy to scam people it is because corrrupt police allows it.

Good job for shining a light on this, but wouldn't this in depth reporting and telling the world how the victims are able to flee make the kidnappers more alert and stringent and ultimately making it more difficult for other trapped individuals to flee?

I hope China will not remain neutral. The telecom fraud problem in Myanmar has caused serious losses to the world, and the Myanmar government and some warlords have sheltered criminals. China should directly express its position and send troops to sweep up Myanmar's telecommunications fraud park. During the peak period of telecom fraud in Myanmar, one or two million people participated, which is no longer a simple problem.

The worst thing was those victims of trafficking once they are not making money enough many were killed and the traffickers sold their organs. The top coup Burmese military high ranks have been deeply involved in this operation along with ethnic militias who are under their controlled. Many Chinese descends like KuKang militia who are formed under Burmese military power.

There are hundreds of victims from Sri Lanka in these facility some came back to Sri Lanka by paying hefty amounts to them all those workers are skilled workers not some low level employees. Our government tried hard to get the rest of them but they just denied every request showing no cooperation. Afghanistan is good and cooperative compared to this Myanmar junta. They source people through bogus job agencies around the world they pay a huge amount of money to agencies to lie to their job seekers, often these agencies ran by the same country where victims come which is sickening scamming its own blood.

It's complicated my friend, maybe they came there for vacation and ended up being trafficked, there are many illegal ways to cross the border. And thousands of burmses people are caught trying to cross the border illegally every year. I am a Burmese citizen and I deeply want the junta to stay away from politics, they do nothing but help the crime leaders and help the citizens from no point. name a type of business and they will be one that junta owns. E.g telecom, banking, travel, automobile and seriously trafficking businesses too. Sry for my bad English. The junta has helped many trafficking bosses by sheltering them. We need democracy ( not democracy specifically but a system that is ruled by good leaders who actually love their citizens, maybe everyone thought democracy will bring that , so ok we want democracy)
