Thrawn has been patient. But for how much longer? Thrawn’s mixed loyalties have been in front of us this whole time, and perhaps even trying to aid the Rebellion while leveraging the Empire's strength for the benefit of the Chiss Ascendancy. (Please read Thrawn: Alliances) Enjoy!

List of Some Evidence (Not all, this would be a super long post lol) Combining Rebels Series and Books: “My people come first.” Remember, Thrawn’s true plan is to bring aid to his people and to defeat a greater evil out there in the Unknown Regions. He’s trying to leverage the Empire’s strength, but Vader became suspicious in Alliances, between Seasons 3 & 4 of Rebels. Chiss children had been kidnapped by a race of aliens called Grysk. Thrawn had to convince Vader to allow them to rescue the children, but in doing so, revealed his mixed loyalties. 1. “My eyes see slightly more into the infrared than yours.” (Thrawn telling Anakin why he knew more enemies were in one section of the Mokivj base versus another. Thrawn could SEE them) THEREFORE Thrawn saw but tried to ignore the Rebels sneaking around many times. I show a few examples when Thrawn clearly sees them. a)Thrawn saw Ezra behind the crates at the Tie Defender facility. See his eyes? Thrawn saw him clearly. b)Thrawn saw Hera and Ezra sneaking around on Ryloth. Captain Slavin would have blown up the Ghost were Thrawn not there to make him stand down. c)Thrawn saw the droid and knew Ezra(Thrawn saw a figure in infrared) was behind the wall in his office. Thrawn was dismissing the stormtroopers saying everything was alright??? Thrawn would’ve been able to discuss his true plans with Ezra if Kallus wouldn’t have reprogrammed the droids. Send him to Ascendancy like he tried with Nightswan?? 2. “By the light of Lothal’s moons.” Thrawn knew the Fulcrum code-phrase. He knew Anakin (“I will always honor his legacy”), would he have reached out to Ahsoka at some point? 3. Thrawn was jamming the Fulcrum signal. Kallus breaking the jammer is what allowed Thrawn to triangulate the Atollon base. Seems to me like Thrawn didn’t want to find the base. Would he have revealed his true plans to Kallus if Kallus didn’t attack so quickly? Send to Ascendancy like Eli and tried to with Nightswan? 4. Thrawn saved Hera from Skerris in the Tie Defender. 5. Most interesting to me is The Bendu convo. The Bendu “You cannot see.” Thrawn’s reaction is everything. Some Chiss children have a Force ability called Third Sight but it gets weaker and fades as they get older. Does Thrawn have something to hide? Thrawn’s mind was opaque to Vader just like the Force-sensitive Chiss children they rescued. So many more connections that the Rebels Series has to the books. Watch his eyes, watch his reactions. It’s clear Thrawn is trying to balance his duty as “a Commander of the Expansionary Defense Fleet” with his duty as a Grand Admiral of the Empire. He’s been playing the Empire this whole time, but remember he can’t reveal himself even to the Rebel Alliance. It’s too dangerous and he needs them to react to him like they normally would to a Grand Admiral of the Empire. It’s so wonderfully complicated. I hope we get more of Thrawn’s story in more media. yk i'm wondering if Thrawn talked to Ezra about his plan when he forced him to surrender and that's why he jumped into hyperspace with thrawn

I have a little thing to add, when he says to Vader "Why can it not be both" he gives off the feeling of a person who knowns they might not be able to see something they care about again. I am thinking the reason who knowns so much about the gift Chiss kids have, he has at least one kid maybe by Ar'alani. I just even back in the Legends books Ar'alani seems to know Thrawn very well. I have a long theory if you would like the full run down, I would be happy to Email it.

@@lizard6341 I was inclined to think that the bendu saying "you can not see" was more so a question because he sensed thrawn had the "gift" as a child + him telling Vader about using the machine.

@@user-qz5hj6ex3t as far as we know, they don't exist in canon. At least yet. I have doubts they ever will. The grysk hegemony has been created as an alternative to them, and I actually quite like them in that role. The Vong are a bit too, external, to star wars. I understand that's the point, but Disney aren't exactly famed for taking risks, especially with the star wars IP

@@will2brown50 There is nothing left of the Nikardun Destiny as confirmed in the second Chiss book, the Illumen didnt have any uses past Jixtus's plans and had no concept of conquest before them so its more likely they are simply not a threat, not to mention the Chiss techs determined their ships dont match up to Chiss ships and tech. The Grysk and whatever race attacked Csilla all those years ago seem the only real threat. The Vaagari being an entirely nomadic pirate species but mainly attacking the border nations seems to also label them as a non-threat to the Ascendancy.

It's impressive how closely Marc Thompson can mimic Lars Mikkelsen's performance as Thrawn. Made those audiobooks practically seamless with Rebels.

After reading the first 2 thrawn books i have come to the conclusion that thrawn is not a villian, but a realist who is fiercely loyal. He understands fhe bigger picture, and must do whatever is necessary to achieve ultimate victory against this grave evil he alludes to. He is like a much more intelligent and forgiving thanos with a much better and serious goal to achieve.

I'm starting to get the (random) hunch that the First Order largely rose as a tragic consequence of Thrawn's single-minded focus on thwarting the Grysk/Vong; sure, he pushed back the apocalypse/alien invaders, but at what cost? (the Empire/Imperial Remnant that he tolerated as a "pawn/lesser evil" wise up to his agenda, use him as a pawn (in return), backstab him (and the Chiss Ascendancy), and then usurp the Grysk/Vong as the galaxy's "next greatest evil")

@@topnotchshinobi i believe thrawn needed the downfall of the empire inorder to rebuild them and fight off the grysk. The first order being a byproduct is logical extension

@@armaniwebb4467 Haven't finished "Lesser Evil" yet, but as of this evening, I think I've reached the chapter which contains the "whatever the cost" quote/paraphrase you refer to. Anyways, it's been a glorious three decades of seeing Zahn write Thrawn (ever since the original 1990's Thrawn Trilogy), here's to hoping that the success of Thrawn's live-action portrayal in the New Republic era will convince Zahn to keep contributing! :)

I hope that Filoni is careful with the way he handles Thrawn going forward. I heard that Timothy Zahn was not even consulted about the name drop they just did for him in The Mandalorian. It must suck to not have complete creative control over your own character.

Imagine if someone did that with Ahsoka..Filoni would not have it. Although I do hope he is brought back, 7-9 kinda ruined the chances we could get an invasion from the unknown regions that Thrawn knew would come.

Jango747 not necessarily. I firmly believe the "unknown threat" could very well be Vitiate returning. If so, he would've let Palpatine run his course first to avoid the issue.

This is what worries me the most. I hope Filoni doesn’t ruin his character in live action, turning him into a mere villain. Zahn was not consulted? This is bad news because Zahn’s novels.capture the layered and complex Thrawn’s nature and personality.

"It must suck to not have complete creative control over your own character." I asked Mr. Zahn at a Star Wars authors panel in 2007 to settle a bet for me on why he killed Thrawn at the end the "Heir to the Empire" trilogy; I was convinced he'd created a character who was just too good and he HAD to die in order for the good guys to win because Mr. Zahn had sort of painted himself into a corner. He laughed--all the authors did--and he said that was a big part of it, and he realized halfway through the second book that in order for the New Republic to win in the end, he would have to take Thrawn off the board somehow. But he also admitted a part of it was just because he knew this was the start of a series of books to come, "And I wanted to be selfish and keep other people from playing with him." (To which Michael Stackpole, author of the X-Wing series said he was totally bummed he wasn't going to get to play with Thrawn, and at the same time totally relieved no one was going to expect him to, because he didn't think he could live up to that pressure, and several of the others agreed, and said no one could ever be in his head as well as Mr. Zahn was...and fact which has been proven true every time someone else tries to write him.) Anyway, now that Thrawn is back in the canon and in the same timeframe as some of the ongoing stuff, that makes him, unfortunately, fair game. All I can do is HOPE that Favreau and Filoni stick to their creed about wanting to keep making things the fans will *love* and be excited for. Favreau is a fantastic collaborator, and I hope and pray he gets on the phone or has a lunch with Zahn and picks his brain. I understand them not necessarily tapping him to write an episode--novel writing and writing for TV are *VERY* different things, each takes a special set of skills, and those skills are not usually interchangeable. But there is no reason John can't say, "Hey, Tim, we're thinking of having this and this and this happen. How would Thrawn deal with that? What's his process?"

@@Johnston212 Me too, for the people who only watch the movies and shows a series about the novels would provide some much needed context to the character and his motivations, I loved him in Rebels, he was amazing and Mikkelsen was a great choice, but we only see him from the perspective of the rebels and thus as a villain in need of defeating, though even then some of hi honor and pragmatism shinea through. With the upcoming Ahsoka series people will need the context, at least in the form of flashbacks.

Yes, so much complexity, and what's so lovely is that Disney/Lucasfilm seems to have been consistent over the TV series and books, it's just hidden, but there if you look. He was playing the long game, hoping to outlast Palpatine. But.. no one's ever really gone as we found out in the Ep 9 trailer lol. Thanks for commenting! :D

1:37 "why can it not be both" I feel that line. I've been in that position before, trying to explain to someone that just because I associate with someone they don't like doesn't mean that I'm betraying them. It sounds so logical when you think about it but something in their mind keeps them from seeing it that way.

@@paulinak8124 Considering that Ahsoka is the Rebellion's very first Fulcrum (and no, I'm NOT counting Saw Gerrera; he's more thug than spymaster), and considering that Thrawn outwitted a "later generation" Fulcrum (Kallus), seeing Ahsoka and Thrawn confront each other is going to feel very poetic (in my opinion).

@@LadyLarani I can already imagine the characters' shock in the early Ahsoka episodes: Ahsoka has Thrawn at lightsaber-point, but is then surprised by an older Ezra who intervenes on Thrawn's behalf (finally explaining that "Thrawn's on our side!", or is at least "an ally of convenience")

The republic trained its clone and officers ambidextrous most still used their right hand but in rare cases some clones preferred their left hand but I think this training was carried over to the imperial stormtrooper corps and officers corps and that how thrawn probably learned or it could also be something he learned before he joined the empire as an officer in the Chiss expansionary defense fleet

@@jaspermennink7409 Most Stormtroopers are Left Handed in the originals because the Sterling SubMachine guns the E-11 is based off of have their magazines on the left side, which would be constantly poking their armor if they carried at a resting position right handed.

The politics of the New Republic, especially emphasizing local government and demilitarization, doomed it to fail even without the First Order supporters within. Thrawn would not have supported it, although it's weakness might draw enemies away from the Ascendancy.

He wouldn't fairly. He never served anyone but the chiss He obeyed the emperor as the chiss wanted him to. At the end He is probably preoccupied in something cause none of the chimurade or related crew is heard from again.

Distract him with holograms of people he is familiar with. (Thrawn knows he loves padme). Then throw a grenade next to him that he has to keep unexploded with the force. Then overwhelm him with gunfire. Easy

This video/edit is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!! I love it in EVERY way. In the past year I've read both the Ascendancy trilogy and Thrawn trilogy and came to love him as a character sooo much. I find everything you said in your pinned comment super interesting, so much so that I want to go and rewatch all of his episodes in Rebels now lol. I am INCREDIBLY NERVOUS as to how they will treat his character going forward in the Mandalorian and the Ahsoka series.

I haven't heard the dialogue between vader and thrawn before man, thrawn must be a good person then, there's hope he could turn things around in The Mandalorian and hopefully ahsoka doesn't kill him

Thrawn has been done dirty in the animated series tbf. He was portrayed as the evil 'heir to the empire' that he was in the EU, but in the Disney-canon books he really isn't that black-and-white. I really hope the new Ahsoka series has kept Timothy Zahn in the loop, and the screenwriters haven't ignored him, again, like they did with The Mandalorian..

He's a true warrior, has a deep passion for people. He's the perfect embodiment of "Be polite, be kind, and have a plan to kill every person you meet". I don't believe he's "playing the empire" but he's a realist who is fiercely loyal. He understands Good vs Evil. I also don't think he is force sensitive, but it'd be hard to believe he wasn't superstitious. It makes such sense that him and Anakin, then Vader would get along so well. They're the embodiment of the warrior psyche, always honorable yet savage in their objectives. He's a true tacticitian to fear. History has shown the greatest warriors have a creative side, and his study for art matches his character so well. I don't believe he was incensed at Slavins comment about 't'wlek trash' because Slavin insulted art; In fact, Hera had just belittled her own family heirloom moments prior. But rather Thrawn was agitated at the Empires attitude towards foreign races as being so useless. Thrawn is a chiss and was himself a subject of discrimination at the academy. It was Slavin's racist attitude that made Thrawn angry.

Just stumbled back onto this video over two years after I first saw it. I haven't kept up with the the recent series of prequel Thrawn novels revealed more about his backstory with the Chiss Ascendancy, so I don't know what seeds Timothy Zahn planted in those books. But now that Thrawn is back in the Ahsoka show, I'm honestly a bit worried that Dave Filoni and co. are gonna just turn Thrawn into yet another Imperial big bad guy for the heroes to defeat instead of delving into this much more interesting take on the character where his ultimate loyalties are not to Palpatine's empire. Oh well, there's two episode left of Ahsoka as of me writing this. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Yes, this is from the book Thrawn Alliances which takes place between seasons 3 and 4 of Rebels. It's a really awesome look into Thrawn and Vader's characters and probably my favorite Star Wars book. Sets up a lot of things I think. I also think Thrawn was trying to bring Anakin out of Vader and laments that he couldn't fully.

The specific comment of "For if one is remembered by a friend, one is never truly gone" comes from a collection of Thrawn's journal entries which can be found at the beginning of each chapter in the book Thrawn, released in 2017.

I wonder if now in the Ahsoka series it’ll be revealed that Thrawn decided to not go back to the Empire and let it fall so that the Grysks redirect their attention from the Chiss Ascendancy.

He was right, up until Disney wiped out the franchise. The Yuuzhan Vong were constantly appearing in the galaxy and they were definitely more evil then the Empire and a threat to all life. But in one stroke of a pen, Disney declared it noncanon just so they could write their own story. The Admiral Thrawn trilogy, written by Timothy Zahn, would have made a GREAT story, but Disney decided to take a steaming dump on the books that went up to 40 years after the Battle of Yavin. I loved Star Wars, but if I'm ever at Universal in Orlando, I see one First Order stormtrooper, Darth Crybaby, or Rey Sue and I'm not going to the Star Wars area of it.

I can't really see how you can view this video as something to make you complain about things you didn't like. It was made to appreciate Thrawn's story in Canon.

@@darkwolf4434 I do appreciate Thrawn's story in Canon, as in REAL Canon. I was enthralled by any EU book featuring Thrawn.

@@chrismartindale7840 What do you mean by real Canon? The original Canon which was the real Canon before Disney bought Lucasfilm are only the 6 movies Lucas created. But I personally prefer Thrawn in the new Canon but I did however really like the Thrawn triology in Legends but it didn't really give Thrawn much of a character and killed him off just like nothing had ever happened.

@@darkwolf4434 The original canon is the only canon. All the 100+ books written are EU and canon. Disney can't make me accept there crappy fanfiction as canon.

@@chrismartindale7840 Your opinions are irrelevant in that sense as Canon is what the writers are to consider and your personal emotions wont change that, if you keep telling yourself that, sure keep going as long as you don't let it effect others.

@@jane-the-mentalist Yeah, I'm sad we didn't get any hint of what the Chiss are up to in Skywalker. I was so convinced that's what the name was referring to as well, how the name "skywalker" was the rough basic translation from Cheunh of what the Chiss Force-sensitive children were called. Was thinking it would be a new name for Foce-sensitives or something haha. Hopefully we can see these things one day :)

the funny thing is that Thrawn is not really a Imperial Loyalist, he don't ever like the empire, he just think that the empire is the best ally for his people, what he is not wrong, Star Wars show again and again how The Republic and The New Republic are not only easily corrupted, but also extremely slow and innefective, and general way the are more like a vulnerability than a potential ally. so he support the empire because the empire can help his people, the rebels and the new republic can't not.

Funny you should talk about Thrawn and the Death Star in the same conversation; his TIE Defender project was competing with the first Death Star ("Project Stardust") for funding, the results of which obviously didn't go his way. :(

Mostly Thrawn: Alliances, the second audiobook in the first canon trilogy. And then a bit of the first canon Thrawn book and Star Wars Rebels seasons 3 & 4.
