The basics of thread checkers - a simple tool to determine what size (diameter and thread pitch) a given screw/bolt/nut is.
Plus a tip to quickly figure out if two screws/bolts match whether you have this tool or not (more useful for when you don't care what the screw size is, you just want to know if two random screws are the same)!

Well damn, I been wanting one of the board ones forever and avoiding these kind; after hearing the explanation of why these are better I completely change my mind.

How do you use the female end on a fixed bolt when you cannot spin the whole thing much ???

That is a case where you'd need to do something like I show starting at 3:37 - thread comparison using the male end.

Having trouble.....purchased both 8mm and 5/16" bolt for replacement. Size appears correct, but the threads on both are too tight together compared to my original bolt. What to do next? Thanks

There are multiple (usually two but sometimes more) different thread pitches for a given size of bolt/nut. In your case, there is both 8-1.00 and 8-1.25 on the metric side and 5/16-18 and 5/16-24 on the SAE side. Sounds like you got the fine (narrower) pitch where you needed the coarse (wider) pitch.

@@boinger Thank you very much for this info.....very much appreciated. Will the more coarse pitch be available at Lowes, etc.? If not, where do you suggest I look?

@@DhruvaMaharaja1952 Should be available at a hardware store. Certainly one of the thread pitch options will be the more common option, but if you search around I imagine you'll find what you're looking for. Also, the sort of thread checker that's in this video would help determine which is correct without having to guess :)
