Thread Count Is A Lie - Here’s How To Buy High-Quality Sheets

It's easy to think that a high thread count means better sheets. That's not really the case, here's why. Following is the transcript of the video:
Thread count doesn't matter as much as you think. It refers to the number of threads in one square inch of fabric. You might think a higher thread count means higher-quality sheets, but manufacturers have tricky ways of manipulating that number.
They can use low-grade cotton that's thin when spun. That way, they can cram more threads into a smaller space. Or, they can create a "multi-ply" thread by twisting two threads together before weaving. Since they've fit two threads in the place of one they can claim double the thread count. They can even twist four threads into a single "multi-ply" thread. This quadruples the thread count but doesn't make the sheets any softer or stronger.
So how do you know you're buying quality bedding? Experts say to look for organic cotton. It’s durable, soft, and breathable. Another good sign is the sheets will improve with each wash. Lower-quality sheets may come with polishes or waxes to make the feel of sheets at the store more pleasant. But those will wash off the first time you clean your sheets.
Also, if you see threads hanging off or nonuniform stitches that's a sign the sheets are cheaply made. Spend a little more, and sweet dreams will follow.

Working in Bed Bath, we have a new set of sheets of 1,200 TC made in India for $80. Feels like percale, but felt rough vs soft as our 1,000 TC Dreamzone Pimacott and even rough compared to 500 TC Pimacott, respectively near $240 or $120. Eye opening to know the loops trick by textiles. Know your cotton sources, ask someone knowledgeable in-store if possible!

Behind the Thread Count We all hear the term "thread count" thrown around a lot when it comes to bedding, but what does it all mean? And does a higher thread count actually mean a better quality product? Thread count refers to the total number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch. Many bedding companies market thread count as an important factor for consumers to consider when purchasing a set of sheets. The age-old saying "the bigger the thread count, the more luxurious the sheets," became a way for companies to increase profits without increasing the quality of their product. But speak to any textile expert and they'll tell you it's a dishonest marketing tactic. As Pat Slaven, textile expert at Consumer Reports says, “Now you see 1,000 thread count sheets but you just can’t get that many threads on a loom.” It is physically impossible to fit more than 800 threads in a square inch, so how is it that companies are selling 1000, 1500, or even 1800 thread count sheets? In order to understand, I suggest reaching out to Pure Parima to learn more.

Depends on the weave and depends on the material. If you want a nice cotton bed sheet, go for an Egyptian cotton, plain weave with a high thread count. If the manufacturer can't tell you what kind of cotton it is or what weave it is or what country it is made in then its more of a gamble.

Yeah, I can't figure out how an organic cotton would make a sheet any different than a non organic cotton. I think that maybe it was tied to the "manufacturers use polish/wax to trick you into thinking it's softer" tip, in that the product can't call itself organic if they do so. But not certain.

I’ve bought Charter Club sheets several times in the last 3 years and they are always rough. Almost as if there are tiny little prongs on the surface. Sliding one sheet over the other grabs the other and ver uncomfortable to sleep on. I bought these at Macy’s because I had bought similar ones years before that were very comfortable and I thought these were the same. They look the same other than the strip pattern size. Has anyone else noticed this? It’s like an inferior cotton being used.

High thread count sheets may not means better sheets. but most of better sheets have a great thread count. Coolex cooling bed sheets have no thread count, but which is most likely 600-800 thread count maybe. Its really a cool sheets to keep a wonderful sleeping.

why would organic cotton change the feel of the sheets compared to the exact same sheets made with "non-organic" cotton? Also isn't all cotton organic, or is that tied to the wax/polish fact, in that sheets labeled organic cotton can't have any polish/wax?

hi, cotton is itself an organic material but "organic" refers to the growing practice. so if it wasn't grown organically, it likely was sprayed with pesticides and other chemicals that can change the qualities of the cotton, like softness. So although it isn't a perfect measure of quality, if something is really organic, it's safe to assume that more care was put into creating the product from beginning to end, and maybe that results in softer sheets.

Plying threads may not make sheets softer, but is does make them stronger. Its how cables work. This is not why thread count is, a lot of the times, a lie. Its a lie when manufacturers spin a short staple cotton very thinly. The sheets will become very thin and fragile (because of the thin threads) and rough (because of the shorter length of cotton fibers). Look for sheets with a longer staple cotton, like supima or Egyptian cotton. A thread count below 200 is probably too low. A thread count above 400 is probably to high.

I really don't see the logic of this. If they're twisting 4 threads together then that thread is still 4 times stronger. You say they cram threads into a smaller space, but isn't that exactly the point?
