You'll find that a bit of grease will help a lot when tapping threads; also winding in a bit , then back-out a few turns, releases the cut metal (especially if you're tapping steel).Hope this helps.

I would have cut the bolt down the middle then use the nut to screw up to tighten the bolt so you can change the blades if it breaks for any reason. Great idea👍🏽

I do that match thing with Tic Tac boxes. There isn't a match dispenser born to 'match' a Tic Tac box. If you'll excuse the pun.

yes they are naturally waterproof and it will float if dropped in water

@@utubeape Unfortunately they don't appear to be on sale in the South African country Town where I live. I only got that one because it was in a batch of empty containers that somebody was throwing out. I have an idea for making fire-starting kits and selling them at the local campsites of which there are several within walking distance of where I live.

@@susanp.collins7834 what I do is soak makeup remover pads in a mixture of melted wax and mineral spirit then get some wood shavings and put them in the middle of 2 of these discs so it looks like a cookie, then store these in little tins 3 or 4 however many will fit. They burn for ages

Yes, and a tic-tac container is much safer than capping off a metal tube at both ends and filling it with MATCHES! Very dangerous and possibly illegal.
@frikkiesmit327
@frikkiesmit327 4 ай бұрын
I 3d printed a match storing cylinder that can take almost whole match box's matches. The plastic lid seals properly and container floats also. Nice bright colour contrast to the colours of outdoors will help if the container was dropped and you need to find it. If you want to prep for survival type scenario than do it bit more propper cause i promise you even at home when wind blows and its cold 3 matches is useless. Get more matches and make them windproof.

That saw is attached with only some string and some glue or resin, that is not strong enough for a real survival scenario.

Ninety percent (90%) of that auger bit could be shank -- IOW, the flutes beyond one (1) inch from the tip do nothing useful but take up space and be heavy. If you're worried about clogging the hole with waste because the flutes aren't there anymore, arrange to drill upward (or upward on an angle), catching the waste, for re-use, in a cup, bowl, pot, hat, etc.. It's a special-purpose/special-circumstances bit, after all, so making it differently shouldn't surprise. Since you won't be carrying it around loose in your SHTF kit, the lid to the tubular container you'd make to hold the bit could also serve to center the shank in the hole, once started...

I can see those matches igniting in that little tube You should have wax covered those matches Which would have made them waterproof

My saw was somewhat similar. I used a 1 inch dia. alum tube and oval-ated it in my vise and hammering. I made lightening holes in it and wrapped it in Wilson tennis racket tape. My Mora knife sits inside the tube at one end and the saw blade sits inside when not in use. I used a bolt and wing nut to secure the blade when inside and outside the tube. I glued webbing near both ends for mounting on my belt. The Mora knife is swiftly removable vs vertically supported on a belt. I've mentioned this preferential method for a knifes' location previously on KZfaq. Unhappy with the alum. distorting and not accepting epoxy under stress for the alum. fillers where the saw blade is attached at the hole I disgarded it and repeated the process with a vacuums plastic tube and used a heat gun for shaping it oval. I repeated lightening it and Wilsonizing it but shrunk it at the location for the blade bolt/wing nut, no longer requiring a filler. My only concern is the durability of the plastic at the bolt/wing nut area after repeated use. I may consider placing a "U" shaped piece of steel with holes at the hole for bolt/wing nut to handle the stress of the blade on the plastic.

Or i could just buy a Leatherman. Time is money too. I'm as excited to make custom tools as any guy, but many of these youtube videos show way too much work, time, and needed tools to produce mostly half-baked contraptions with serious design flaws. A decent leatherman or swiss army knife can do what the first 2 do, and i could probably find a dozen containers, that i already own, that make great waterproof match cases. Seriously, i love that people show creative ideas, but in what world would a guy, with access to a shop full of power tools, actually take the time to make these?

@outlaweduk
@outlaweduk 5 ай бұрын
if you got a sak open the hook put jigsaw blade through the keyring then close hook on it if its got a bit of play in the groove use tooth pick to wedge it, a lathe drill and self tappers are hard to find in the wild just to make a handle when you already have it carry both a wood and metal blade😁

Generally speaking a jigsaw or other reciprocating saw blade performs much better than any SAK saw, but of course that depends on the manufacturer.

Fun to make stuff…but ‘Survival?’ No! Just wilderness bushcraft…in which case you have already planned for it and decided what items to take depending on how arduous you like your outdoor experience to be. SURVIVAL is a whole different ball game in which you wash up on your island….with NOTHING. No Bowie knife, No folding saw, No 12 feet of para cord, No lighter, matches or Ferrite striking rod, No Puritabs, No folded tarp, No ration pack, No compass etc…Because you were not expecting it to happen! You get the picture? THAT is survival. What most survivalist channels are doing is playing at it…but it can be done if you have the skills.

You used a saw and a belt grinder to create another saw, awesome! Aren't you the swiss pocket knife guy? Isn't there a Victorinox with a metal saw/file? Then you made a handle piece for a big ass drill where you can stick wood in, that'll most likely break. Awesome! Btw. a metal handle to that drill cant be so much heavier than that contraption. And finally you made a container out of a metal tube that most likely isn't even waterproof to put your matches in. Awesome!

@@robertgow7952 Ok, you got me, I got a bit carried away with my sarcasm there and now I feel bad about the criticism. The creator showed us some nice tool working and creativeness, I shouldn't have been that hard on him if that is what he enjoys and wants to share. Personally I'd prefer to make a video if I come up with some unique idea that I can't find anywhere else and want to share but that's my expectation and I shouldn't project this on others as I did with my original comment. Thanks for your tempered response and not instantly attacking me like it has become the norm here on YT!

If i would use a glue there i would use sikaflex or pratley steel . But i think one can rather make a metal locking mechanism to lock blade in place. Basicly if you can have like a nut that screws over the blade and onto the pipe thus pulling and locking the blade in position so blade cant pull out if stuck while sawing wood.
