Last March blood tests suggested my Vit D level was 44, not terrible but not "high" despite my diligently consuming 5000 ius daily (or more) since covid. In April, I got serious about my diet and supplements and "absorption issues" even though I had no idea what issues I might have. Went gluten-free (still 98% gluten-free, vacations have thrown me off some,) sugar-free (now just way reduced sugar,) artificial sweetener-free; started taking a probiotic, digestive enzymes; started taking cod liver oil with my Vit D. And, I don't avoid the sun, though we're told that as Oregonians (and I work inside,) we will never get enough Vit D just from sun exposure. Two weeks ago I saw an endocrinologist for the first time ever, for my raging osteoporosis. (I decided I have to do meds.) He took some blood, not fasting, said everything looked good except in his opinion I'm hypothyroid (what? I usually can tell...ack, not sure I want to up my thyroid meds, my PVCs are already out of control, maybe the two are not connected but they started when I started taking thyroid medication, so....) But also, my Vit D level was 107!! Guess I'm absorbing it now! To what might be attribute this? Is it the cod liver oil? Am I improving absorption generally? Is it seasonal? Anyway, I won't be taking as much if it now. 😅 Just looked up Vit D in cod liver oil...guess it has quite a bit on its own. I'm probably more evidence that doing this on your own, not knowing what you're shooting at, isn't wise. But when you find out you have severe osteoporosis and it's upending your life (due to pain) you...want to DO things, you feel like you've already waited too long...so, I've been lighting fires. Edit again: I think I'm being tested for hyperparathyroidism (24 hour urine, haven't submitted yet.) Blood tests for same suggested all is well but of course I've read that this can be deceiving. I really WANT there to be some (fixable) reason for my osteoporosis, and it does sound like Hashimotos and hyperparathyroidism together isn't that uncommon, also symptoms seem nearly identical. I know I just need to wait and see but now I'm wondering about that Vit D level and how it might affect the 24 hour urine test. The nurse or whoever talked to me yesterday didn't seem too concerned but after decades of being a bit laissez Faire myself, I feel like it might be time to start paying better attention. 😮

Cancer: I worry about taking anything with growth factor if I have had cancer. It is hard to balance what our body needs with aramotase inhibitors/ and estrogen positive cancer. I feel there should be instruction for those with cancer and for those without cancer because there may be differences. And our oncologists do not direct us into the detail behind vitamins because they are focused on cancer ( you would think they should be educated on nutrition as well since they are prescribing us to take D3 and Ca but they don’t give the patient more information than to take it. I was never told to take vit K……. But because of my own research I have found it is needed. Just having cancer is draining enough without having to fully understand the details behind all that we are supposed to do to regain our health. I appreciate all you provide here on your channel. I am learning and very grateful.

I have recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis, with the DEXA scan showing weakness in all three areas. I have all the risk factors - family history, age 66, female Caucasian, lack of natural vitamin D as I live in Scotland, also I am slim build. I did think my regular ballet classes (5-6 hours a week) plus a very rarely sedentary lifestyle might have helped prevent but it has not. My doctor has prescribed Alendronic Acid, along with a vit/ca supplement. I intend to balance my mineral and vitamin intake better now, along with your advice. However, I would value your views on the use of Alendronic acid? I am very hesitant to use this as I have read very mixed views. Great first video by the way! As a former teacher, I really appreciate your teaching style - organised, clear and easy to understand without being over simplified. Thanks for providing such a great resource.

Excellent! May I propose to add one supplement to the equation? It is Boron, which is a great supplement for bones. It regulates calcium, magnesium and phosphor. Next to this, it supports hydroxylation and this increases free vitamin D3, regulates testosterone, estrogen, and helps your brain. It is anti-inflammatory, and anti-mold. May help sleeping better. *Very good to treat osteoporosis, when combined with vit D3, K2(!!), magnesium, silica (e.g. as orthosilicic acid.

In the morning and evening you'll only make Vit D in your skin if the sun is already very high (only UV-B is utilized). So "in the middle of summer". If you don't live near the equator it makes sense to measure Vit D3 at the end of the summer and end of winter and take higher a higher dosage during winter to stay on a good level throughout the year. - on skin cancer: worst thing you can do is avoid UV-B all year and then get abrupt high exposure during a sunny vacation. Best to expose yourself (both in terms of timing and duration) evenly throughout the year (starting kn early spring).
@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas Жыл бұрын
Thank you for contributing. I agree with these comments. Avoiding sun and UV is more harmful than beneficial. I don't find seasonal fluctuations as much with testing as you'd think. Essentially, everyone is deficient unless supplementing. I can't remember a single optimized level naturally.

HI Kathy, That's not surprising. We are taught to fear Vitamin K as physicians because of fear of increased risks of clots but as I discussed unless you are on coumadin/Warfarin that risk has not been proven in research. Dogma dies hard though and this fear will likely persist for decades to come.

Hi Marika, Sounds like you've got a lot to consider. I can't give specific recommendations through this platform BUT let me mention some generalities you may benefit from. First, bone spurs are a sign of osteoARTHRITIS not osteoPOROSIS. They can be pain producing but often are not. Improving your bone quality should have no negative impact on these bone spurs. For us anyone that presents with IBS gets a full gut workup to see why they have symptoms. While I believe IBS exists it is often a diagnosis delivered by providers who don't know where else to look. gut dysfunction can strongly contribute to poor bone health and poor health overall. Hello, I like the combination and form of these supplements. The amount of Ca required in supplement form will depend on the amount supplied by diet. The D3 requirement will also depend on testing. In summary, it's good but I'd want to know more before recommending this as a primary tool.

Greetings!! from the Uk. Great! advice. Thank you. What is your opinion on testing vitamin levels? Blood testing or strand of hair? @Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas Жыл бұрын
@@lizrigby-jones3700 Hi Liz, Hair testing is a form of functional testing that looks at metabolites. This form of testing and other functional tests can give detailed information on nutrient levels over time. Blood testing gives current levels of specific nutrients which can be great for some like Vit D but not others. We use a combination of both but lean on blood testing for the primary nutrients. Our preferred functional testing modality is through urine. We use a test called Nutreval in the states. I don't believe it is available internationally. K2 I recommend to my patients as MK-7 and there is no clear evidence to support dosing. One product we use as 300mcg in a serving. D3 is highly dependent on genetics, diet and more. Some patients get by with as little as 2,000iu daily and others need over 10,000. That's why testing is critical!

Hi Pauline, Wow! That's a lot of calcium in a supplement! How much you need will depend on your dietary intake. We tell our patients to aim for 1,200 - 1,500mg calcium per day total. This supplement would get them there all by itself. It does have some D and K2 in it but not much of either. I have looked into the clotting issue in depth. I can't find anything other than unsupported dogma and fear that started with patients taking coumadin who do need to limit vitamin K supplementation and through food. That doesn't seem to extrapolate to the general population though. Animal and human studies support massive doses of vitamin K without any increased risk of blood clot. Algae forms of calcium may absorb better but I think the evidence behind that is weak. It also has a high likelihood of being contaminated with toxins because of the poor condition of our oceans. I have recommended AlgaeCal in the past but some components of the product I would prefer different forms. I don't think the perfect supplement for bone loss is out there yet. I'm a bit put off by this practice because I would of thought they would want me to try the right suppliments like described in your video to see if my numbers can come up more naturally then to start one of these medications right away. thank you in advance.

Thank you so much for the information on supplements. Doctors tell you to take calcium and Vitamin D etc. but never explain what to look for in the composition.

Saw a presentation that it is the MK4 version of K2 that has been studied with respect to fracture reduction and is used in Japan at 45 Mg high dose. No research on fraction reduction and MK7 (cheaper form).

I take Citracal Slow-Release with Vit. D3 plus a Vit. K2. The body can only absorb 500 mgs of calcium at a time, which is why I take a Slow-release calcium supplement.

Thank you so much for your information. I am in South Africa and feel lost. You gave me hope when I received a bad diagnosis from a radiologist after a dexa. My hips and lower back are in pretty bad shape. Have osteoporosis in all areas according to dexa. -3.5 I follow your advice regarding lifestyle. Also weight training. I am 63 and fragile. I was super active till a car accident in 1991. Currently I have a lot of pain in joints and bone. A functional doctor did bloodwork to look at hormone replacement, but also prescribed Boniva. I wanted to go the natural way but she feels I must use it for at least 6 months. She is especially concerned about my hips. I had 3 fractures since 3018. I am concerned about meds. I do not know this meds. My mum was on Fosamax which give pain relief , but she had bad wrist fracture when she was 82. Can you please advice......

Thank you for this information 👍 What about the Trace Mineral Boron?? And for those with hypercalcemia, please be very careful with taking calcium supplements.

Thank you! We have a few additional videos on calcium which address this topic but thank you for bringing it up! There are dozens of micronutrients listed on our favorites list and boron makes that list for sure. These are our top three but I’m thinking I need to update this one and remove calcium.

When I lived in Washington I needed 3000+ vitamin D. Now in OK, I only need the 1000 in my multivitamin. I am outdoors a lot in the morning, but do wear sunscreen, spf 50.

Sunscreen will block all of your exposure. You have to decide which you want, natural vitamin D or protection from the sun. Can’t have both.

Sun bath in the morning and evening is a bit unspecific. There was a whole study made on vitamin D production based on the colour of your skin to the time of the day and it was found that you need to be in the sun between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. A white skinned person can get enough Vitamin D in 15 - 20 mins, and on the darker shades it can go up to 45 mins to 1 Hour.

Thank you Dr. Lucas. I had a Calcium Artery test that showed I'm a plaque builder. I've been told not to take a calcium supplement but now have been diagnosed with osteopenia and osteoarthritis. Any suggestions on what to do?
