Coming from the perspective of a long time KZfaq lurker with a large amount of viewing “experience”… if you can even call it that. You should go for a single tier of Patreon to start. If you want to start at $5, consider making that the only tier. The growing audience will make the $5 worth while for you, but keep it obtainable for the larger crowd. Multiple tiers will only burn you out faster, or lead to not worth while content for the high or low end. The idea is to keep your free and paid content good, while not burning yourself out.
@DAMusicalHQ

Very good thinking. You could make $5 a notional amount leaving it open for some who want to contribute more for the same benefit.

I agree with TonyTripleC. The $5 tier keeps it super affordable and you can probably double your paying audience after a bit. Having multiple tiers makes the $5 people feel cheated and that they are missing out on the good stuff. A podcast/KZfaq/Patreon that I support has multiple tiers but the same content for everyone. You can pay $1 per month or $100 per month. I love that because it is not elitist and it builds a loyal community of appreciating fans. Just make sure the content is interesting to YOU and we will be very loyal.

All of the most successful Patreon campaigns I’ve seen have kept it simple. Less tiers = less work = less attrition. $5 should be the standard. If you want to make another tier available ($10), this should include a monthly reward that doesn’t require much (if any) more effort than the weekly content does.
@michaeldiaz5641

$10 could be for a photo dump, an auto iPhone video mashup, a list of products you bought that week, a 2 min cam video of you riding your bike, a clip of you singing a song you like, a paragraph journal entry, a recipe you made that week, a picture of a thing you fixed, an old clip you recorded once, or some mashup of any one of these, whichever seems most convenient :) anywho, love your videos man! You really know how to “Live Doing”!!:)

5.00 $ per month sounds greay. Just make it easy to for folks to pay more per month with no additional benefit (except to you). Keep it simple for everyone.
@TabethaAurochs
@TabethaAurochs 2 жыл бұрын
@@photoviva8245 I couldn't agree more. A lot of people will support an artist through their Patreon simply because they want to support the artist - no further incentives necessary. Simple is better - but make it simple to pay $6/mo, or $11 (for folks who count by elevenses) or $23.17 (prime number fans). I'd also consider having a $1-$3 tier for people who want to be a part of your community but can't necessarily justify $5 every month - that $1-$3 monthly charge on my bank statement reminds me to go back and level up to $5 or $10 next month.

I think the Writer's Workshop at the $5 is a great idea. As far as the other tiers, maybe consider QA's with fans? Like have a poll or a comment section dedicated to a QA to you. I think the other tiers should be in multiples of 5 ($5, $10, $15, $20, etc.) but also allow members to custom donations at the same time with the minimum being the $5 tier.

I know Van was saying he was struggling to put out additional content outside of a weekly KZfaq video and still balance work & life. I think recording a call per week with his film/art friends to process out the weekly KZfaq video is an opportunity at offering other content without lots of competing time commitments for Van. It will be interesting to see if he’s able to offer various tiers or not. I think Q& A is a great idea. I wonder if another tier could offer some form of collaboration….I am interested in $5 a month support.

I am interested in behind the scenes. How to you manager to search and retrieve old clips from years ago without spending 7+ weeks watching and flagging files or films as possibly of interest to your current project ? You showed us once why you alway start an editing session by importing a specific file, because it sets the defaults for (actually I forget what parameters) frame rate, aspect ratio etc. I would like to grow beyond single take run and gun POV, but editing with my perfectionist tendencies means I would take two weeks to make a short video out of video recordings I already have in a box full of SD cards. So a look over your shoulder and you commentate your thought process and organization would be great.

i try to journal my life on video, once i was filling up 200gb per month maybe more (standard 1080p 30fps~) and i was always naming each video, in general what it contained, topics i talked or where i was or what i was doing. that was time consuming but if i managed to do it regulary i could go back to a specific vid from 3 years ago just using keywords on a computer drive search. I used to fill 2tb and now i am backing up on a 10tb drive since one failed on me and luckily using a pirated software i managed to rescue that , money's tough where im from (israel born 26 years ago) so i could use the spare cash to save up for the 10tb at the time. lost all file naming on that tho. i rarely do that now. off topic, i bought a digital picture frame for my mom and i used to fill them up with funny and even beatiful moments in vids or pics which i used all the file storage technique haha. i want to improve that and start editing again and uploading instead of banking it all for myself. pretty creepy to think that all of those vids should out last me.

For another Patreon tier - I'd love to see a sort of podcast thing where you talk to the friends who you've found most aspirational in your life and get them to share early stories of their work where something went wrong. It's something that would be inspirational in a way of how they got around it and how they might use those tactics for work in their modern life.

I watch your channel for two reasons: 1. I can relate to the handyman "spirited" videos you create because I am of the same age and mindset, plus I am entertained by your style and storytelling ability. 2. I am a wannabe creator who is trying to grow my channel and I feel by examining your style and technique I can be inspired to try new things (steal your ideas but make them my own). With that being said, I would be a $5/ month Patreon subscriber because I feel I could learn something from watching the writing workshops and they would be equally as entertaining as a creator. If I am a watcher at $5 per month, I would hope to somehow be a participant at a higher tier. Either by offering the opportunity of a quick personalized workshop or simply just a review of my content with a critique or suggestion for improvement. You couldn't possibly offer this to every subscriber but if you somehow chose one or two people per month then we could learn by watching your review of their channel. You have a great deal to offer as a filmmaker and I think you could play to those strengths by both creating great videos for consumption (Friday release) and by offering something educational to aspiring filmmakers of your patreon subscribers. Thanks for bringing this channel to us Van. I look forward to your videos every week. Neil

Other Patreon tiers. Maker stuff. Multi-episode maker projects. Start small. Maybe first video is here’s what you need. Next video go over techniques for making some cool shit. Can be physical (practical or art) items or film/video making. Share your knowledge. Gain some knowledge along the way by doing projects that maybe you’ve never tried before and also invite other craftsmen on the channel.

I think a patreon is a great solution to your problems! I won’t be able to sign up for it, but I’m sure other people will enjoy it. For another tier, you could record yourself during the filming process. It wouldn’t need to be anything cinematic, just a tripod in the corner of the room maybe

Ok, here it comes, the comment that will be downvoted: I really think Van's videos have gone down in quality since the Destroyer Lamp one. I used to click immediately when one popped into the subscription tab whereas now I don't have the same enthusiasm with them. I know you can't always make masterpieces, but I sensed a big shift in the type of videos and I really loves the old ones. Just putting this out there, maybe Van sees this and reconsiders making more videos in the "old" style.

I honestly never sign in to my Patreon account to look at the custom content. When I choose to 'patreon' a creator, its typically because I like what I get here on KZfaq. So my feedback would be : Have a $5 tier, a mid range tier that gets access to a discord (you will get better feedback than reading youtube comments section) and a whale tier that gets nothing more but your appreciation. Credit the KZfaq videos at the end - that's more than enough for most. Don't make extra content a condition of Patreon, as this will make you feel obligated to make extra content. By all means, post all content to Patreon first, so that those that appreciate the early access get it. This may even help spot mistakes before KZfaq publication As a maker, offer Patreons early access to buy products you make. Don't offer discounts If you do different types of content, create a second KZfaq channel. You get two audiences, some of which wont overlap

First, know that your content is absolutely some of the best on YT right now. Love the idea of Patreon, and even the idea you outlined here. But wonder if it’s just too much of a niche to sustain interest for the medium to long term. Your content is evidence of a superior story telling process and the refined skill of self improvement. I’m in sales, a millions others are too.. we all need to tell stories.. we all need to refine the process. I think $5/mo is a great place to start. Keeping that the only tier would be a great start. Another idea for that tier could be you shooting live during one of your working days: writing process, filming process, editing process. Neistat Brothers videos etc. Top Tier ($200), a hand made Swiss Army knife or crafted pencil or clothing you've written on Top Top Tier, ($1000) a panel of that cycles we're living through wall paper thing! Or a copy of your bootleg Toyota badge! etc. etc. etc. Does this help? I'm not sure it helps as much as money. That's why its called comment.

Great idea! Start with your idea and see what develops next. Everything on this channel feels very organic and authentic. I think this next step is no exception!

Why not just start a podcast? Minimal editing and time committed. Just take an hour out of your week to connect with someone, a friend or someone you admire. Your podcast with Bert was great. It's nice to hear people just be casual so you can get inside their head. That's all ya need, man. Easy. Free-form. After a bit you can snag sponsors. Or you can make the podcast patreon only. Simple is always better!

It’s a great idea. A. Tips about one part of the video - going deep about it (how you made it, why did choose this way and not another way) B. Explaining the writing part of the video.

I do creative in marketing/business world and 'yes' for doing anything that shares more about the creative process and encourages more artists and creative to make cool stuff and get paid. If you do more either talking to friends, or maybe talking to other creatives in your youtube subscriber community and help them with their own projects or just be inspiration. Or maybe like a 'Ask Van' type live show, people call in for 5 mins to get advice on whatever, I'll run the show for you!

Agree with the others below, one tier. You'll probably be surprised that many will go higher than your minimum. As for content, there's the old saying, you want it good, fast or cheap -- pick two. (as long as one of them is not "good"). One artist I support on Patreon does a companion video, or a sneak preview video, or a short story, or an early opportunity for limited edition merch. Patreon also gives you access to people who just want to support you and don't really have to have something in return. Thank you Van!

Something you could potentially put on Patreon is the process behind your videos: ideation, writing, shooting. I think it would be very interesting and informative.

You should also release the conversations as a podcast. $10 tier: Van-selected postcard with a stamped inspirational quote and hand-signed Van signature. $25 tier. Early access to videos, the postcard, and one monthly exclusive live zoom call with these subscribers; also, for this upper tier, after one year, every December, a small, curated gift ($25-$35 retail value)...things like the Corter Leather Bottlehook; maybe a rock you tumbled for several months.

Or skip patreon all together and just run a KZfaq live stream with tipping. You'll make 1000s answering questions.

I say no tiers the 5 dollar buy in with the option to give more is enough your viewers appreciate and look forward to your content every week getting into tiers would only dilute your content and make more work for you. Your viewers will give the 5 dollars and more if they can you being a spirited man of the people is above that tier system your content is of such a caliber already in my opinion is priceless, continue the good fight I have my 5 ready

I would pay 5-$10 beans for just a regular old podcast. You talking with a friend about whatever it is you decide to talk about. I think people who watch this channel are just interested in you and what you have to say about things. Would love to see/hear a podcast with you and the Safdie brothers, I feel like you and them are within the same pocket of culture so a lot of people would probably dig that.

1. Yes it's a good idea. 2. Echo the others in saying, keep it one tier for now. (Or two tiers with the same reward and just say, $5 a month or $8 a month just because I'd like $8. Tim Rogers does this on Action Button.) 3. I got the order wrong. Behind the scenes is good. I imagine you're already capturing it, so it would also be easier out of the gate.

I’d love to see a behind the scenes! I think a combination of a podcast with a Q&A will be perfect for your bottom tier. And I’d stick with the one tier to keep it simple for the time being 😊
