Very informative James, thanks for always putting out really good info on the tattoo culture. I was wondering why my tatto artist only charged me $200 for 2hrs and his hourly is $150...but you answered it in the video when you explained that some artist wont charge for the breaks they take or when they have to help apprentice staff start their practice, which my artist had to do in the middle of my 2nd session.

Another awesome video! This is great, while tattoing a human is not going to be happening for a bit as I'm 1 month into my apprentice, this is something that I've always struggled with generally with art. I always feel like I lowball myself. Thankfuly the shop I'm at has a minimum, and both artists usually tell people the price upfront based on how long they think it will take.

You really cleared up a lot of confusion I had, and I ended up going to a completely different artist at a different shop, and I'm loving this tattoo, man. It was done right, by the right artist. So, thanks... and keep up the good work! Really appreciate the structure of your videos. I'd like to add a kind of mixed form of pricing that my tattoo artist uses and that I have come to appreciate. I work with an artist who is quite sought after in Germany. She does only pieces that interest her and she has her own studio in the middle of nowhere in the German countryside. She dedicates the whole day to one client (or, if you want a smaller piece and your friend, too, than you can negotiate to come as a pair). No walk-ins. She has different hourly rates for conceptual work and the actual tattooing as well as a day rate. The day rate works as a sort of cap - if you reach this amount with the hourly system, the price for this day is the day rate, even, if client and artist are able to keep going. As you said, she mostly does larger pieces that take several sessions. I found that a pretty fair, sometimes even generous deal, especially on the occasions I was able to sit for a really long time.

@JamesWithee
@JamesWithee 5 жыл бұрын
the aftercare video is coming. honestly i'm just waiting until the channel gets bigger first because i know that's gonna be a popular video. if you are disappointed with the way your finger tattoo healed, it's probably because, in general, finger tattoos heal poorly compared to other parts of the body. if it's on the underside of the finger it's 100% going to look like dogshit. if it's on the side, maybe 65% dogshit. if it's on the top prolly 40% dogshit. these numbers get worse if you have rough skin, like if u have worked with your hands a lot in the past. it's just not a good place to get tattooed, especially if you're not already covered in tattoos elsewhere.

I have a question though, if you don’t know how long it might take, and you get an approximate price at your consultation that’s more than you anticipated, how do you go about telling your artist that? I know you’ve mentioned asking to talk to them to reel it back into your price range if possible, but is it wrong to bring it to an artist and ask them to put it off to confirm price on the recipients part?

Of your going for a tat why would you quibble over a price as this is going to be on your body for the rest of your life. I have had the same artist for all my tats and because I am fair skinned really white (so white that white ink shows up on my skin very easily) my artist knows he is not going to be able to go light on colour. All my tats have colour so I have sat for minimum of 1 hour to a max of 6 hours and I pay what he asks as I know my tats are going to look great and he always goes the extra mile to make sure they come out exactly how we want. My artist is also really great with advice. I will say my artist works really quickly as when he gets in the zone he blocks out everything and just goes for it. Love my artist can’t wait for my next tat that will be finishing off my back so it’s going to be a long one but can’t wait Love your videos and hope people take this to heart as you guys seriously deserve the prices you ask.
