Three Dog Night is an American-Irish rock band from the 60's-70's. This band had a lot of energy. They had 3 guys with great voices that could all sing lead vocals. They had a lot of great songs such as "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "One" (written by Harry Nilsson), "Just An Old fashioned Love Song", "Eli's Coming", "Shambala", "Never Been To Spain", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Easy To Be Hard", "The Show Must Go On" etc.

You've done it now. This was one of the biggest selling bands of the 70's with a long string of hits, starting with "One" in 1969. They were & still are beloved by a gazillion of us who grew up in that era. So of course we'll need more! You started with just a fun, silly song that doesn't really showcase their talents. Another fun & downright funny song is "Mama Told Me Not To Come". "Never Been To Spain" is an all around great song. "Try A Little Tenderness" shows you what a great Blues & soulful singer Cory Wells was. "Shambala" & "Black & White" give you the hopeful, hippie vibe with Danny Hutton (from Ireland) leading the way. "Eli's Coming" is...well, you've just got to hear it. All three guys singing their hearts out. "Celebrate" is simply musical happiness. And "Cowboy" is beautiful & sad, with Chuck Negron's gorgeous voice highlighted. Oh, & the aforementioned "One", their first #1 hit, is required listening for anyone with the slightest interest in the band or the musical landscape of that era in America. Really hoping you do more & respectfully requesting that you don't make us wait too long to see what you think. As always, much love from Kentucky U.S. 💙🇬🇧🇺🇸💙🐕🐕🐕🌚(get it?)💙

The band behind the singers were most of the changes. The 3 singers were to core for a long time. All 3 were lead singers and took turns on their many hits. This was put out during the "Jesus Movement" of the late 1960's. They sang a lot of different styles.

The title comes from a British expression. The number of dogs told you how cold it was- a 3 dog night was pretty cold🥶. How seriously can you take a song that starts with this lyric😂. It was pretty big in the US - summer beach song- good for dancing. Better songs by them and different sound “ Never Been To Spain” “Mama Told Me (not to come) “Eli’s Coming” “Shambala” Always humor or irony in their music.

If I remember my Casey Kasem (American Top 40) he may have told me the band’s name referred to an Alaskan (could be northern Canada) night and temperatures. If it was just a cold night you’d sleep huddled with one dog. Colder two dogs. If it was frigid it was a three dog night. Now back to the countdown. Guys it was a Billboard #1 for multiple weeks! They had a good number of hits, too.

A monster #1 hit in 1971. A purposely silly song written by talented singer/songwriter/ actor Hoyt Axton presumably for a children's TV show that never came about. The group was friends with Axton and took a liking to the song and played with the lyrics. The recording was hard to resist. (The original opening lyric was "Jeremiah was a prophet.")

The album with this song was the very first album I ever owned. This one is very bouncy and light-hearted but other of their songs were much more complex. “Liar,” Eli’s Coming,” “One,” “Momma Told Me Not to Come,” and many others. I actually have their greatest hits album on vinyl! Trivia: I grew up in a very fundamentalist church and this song was spoken of FROM THE PULPIT as anti Christian song because the name of the bullfrog was Jeremiah. I hope you will check out some more of their music. More inane info: I sang this to my children as a lullaby when they were babies. 😊

This is probably arguably their biggest hit. They were a huge band. This was one of my mom's favorite albums when I was growing up. Thanks for the good memories guys! 😊 I can't speak for the UK but the 70s fashion here had to be one of the worst of all modern recorded history!!😂 As for some of the lyrics probably proof positive of open use hallucinogenic drugs in the era.😅 The overall message though is something I think is more important now more than ever. The musicality of it's great too! Other great songs of theirs would be Mama Told Me and Never Been to Spain. Nice tease about a Journey reaction you two threw in there!😮

Technically a cover band, but persistently successful.

I have always liked 3 dog night. I went to see them in concert one time, in 1977, and once was quite enough. I think the bass player had crabs because if he wasn't playing he had his hand down the front of his pants scratching. Just never had the desire to ever see them live again.

Hoyt Axton told the story that he was traveling with the group and he'd written this song but it didn't really have any lyrics...so they made up a bunch of stuff that rhymed, intending to change the lyrics later, but it worked so well....they just left it alone. True or Hoyt having some fun...who knows, but its a good story..LOL

They were a 7 member band with 3 lead singers. (That's probably why 25 different members, not all were singers ) Church Negron was the lead singer for this song. He officially left the group 1985.. Corey Wells ( to the left of Chuck in light colored clothes) passed away 2015. Danny Hutton (to the right of Chuck) is the only original singer left in the group. He is still touring under the name Three Dog Night. Each took lead depending on the song and whose voice most suited the song.

I'm not sure how I missed this one. You can't go wrong with Three Dog Night. They are the only band I know of that had three lead singers, and all were REALLY good. I have every album they ever released (15 ) in my collection. Some of their other songs you may want to check out are "One" (is the loneliest number), "An Old Fashioned Love Song", "Shambala", "Black and White", "Never Been To Spain", "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "Eli's Coming", "Easy To Be Hard", "Out In The Country" and "Pieces Of April". The change in members were mostly after they reunited in 1981. One of the best bands from the early 70s. They had 21 Billboard Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975, with three hitting number one, and if I remember correctly, each sang by a different lead singer.

Talking about sounding 'gospely,' I've googled this and couldn't find the source. But back in the 1970s I found sheet music that had a similar song. As a kid, I didn't pay attention to the composer or lyricist. The lyrics were Jeremiah was a prophet. Moses was a prophet too. Jesus was the son of god and man, and his love shines out to you. Joy to the world. All the boys girls. Joy to the children of galilee. Joy to you and me. As I recall, the music was the same as the 'three dog night' song. Does anyone recall the composer or lyricist?

Always enjoyed 3 Dog Night growing up and saw them in concert twice around 2007 and 2013 I think. Chuck Negron left the band and was heavily addicted to drugs. He finally got sober and performed solo. Cory Wells died in 2015. I was not a fan of this song as I thought they had some others that displayed their harmonizing skills much better. But still, I enjoyed the reaction. Well done as always. I'm no talent agent, but just what I heard in this reaction from BP1 tells me he's ready to do a solo tour. Rock on!!!

Hoyt Axton had written this as beginning “Jeremiah was a prophet” but TDN didn’t like the “prophet” when he approached them with the song. In fact, two of the three main vocalists - Danny Hutton and Cory Wells - rejected the song outright, but Chuck Negron felt that the band needed a "silly song" to help bring the band back together as a working unit. (The first four albums from the group were released in the span of just 18 months, and yielded 10 Top 40 hits. However, the band was stressed and tired and beginning to fracture.). With Axton’s blessing, they sat around brainstorming different words until someone suggested “bullfrog”, and it stuck. The band referred to this as their “kid song” or “silly song” and broke with tradition in recording it. Normally, only the three vocalists sang, but in “Joy to the World” all seven band members sang. They had no great expectations for the song other than to have fun and to “be silly”. However, it shot to #1 where it remained for six weeks, and it became Three Dog Night’s signature song. (Axton also wrote “Never Been to Spain”.) I think “Jeremiah was a bullfrog“ as the beginning line was actually a stroke of genius that made the song a hit. It was an unforgettably bizarre hook at the very beginning of the song. (I was just entering high school when the song was released, and immediately people were laughing about it, talking about it, discussing what the first stanza meant - and singing it.) The hook of that first line combined with the catchy tune and the memorable chorus made the song an immediate singalong favorite.

And this world could use some joy right now, this song should be piped down from the heavens worldwide. Maybe just maybe it might make a bit of a difference.

Between the "Christian" rock reference and the hand clapping that didn't match a single beat, it sounds as if the band members weren't the only ones who were lit.😉

From my university days! I loved CCR and Three Dog Night! Back when bands had real singing talent, singing in harmony and playing instruments before the digital age. This music is still being played! Your score is too low. Remember the time frame.
