People don't understand the joys of those British-sounding speakers until they experience it. These ELACs sound a lot like the Celestion DL8s I started my hi-fi journey with. It's a more holistic approach to sound. Andrew Jones is one of very few people in the mainstream of hi-fi that seems to understand this. Everybody else is out chasing frequency extension to 40 khz, and he's building speakers with rolled-off highs and midbass warmth because that's actually what most people want to listen to.

I think I would tend to lean more toward the Triangles. I've listened to some older versions of Triangle bookshelf (Really, they should be called stand mount speakers) and they were magnificent! The imagining was amazing and the sound stage was huge. Thanks for doing the comparison!

I purchased the Elac Debut Reference and have them partnered with the Denon PMA-800ne, with a Pro-ject RPM3 and I can say I could listen to these all day. Just a solid all around speaker, but they do better on speaker stands and away from the wall with a little sub too.

Sean, love this new review format. It is exactly what I, as a neophyte beginning my journey into the audiophile community, am looking for from a review---comparisons among similar products in similar price ranges so I can make an informed buying decision or increase my knowledge about gear in a category. You nailed it Sean! This was a perfect review other reviewers should learn from. I really like that you always take into consideration different listener preferences, different amplification types, and speaker placement variations. Based on your review I’d choose the Triangles, since I can’t live without laser-focused imaging, but I already own KEF LS50s ))

Very much appreciated this one, you narrowed my decision down very well. I especially enjoyed the section at 4:28 where you mention positioning and touch on front vs. rear ported. I was in the camp that was under the impression that front ported immediately meant that it would perform better against a wall, and honestly it had made me gloss over the Klipsch even though from your descriptions it seems that they're likely the best option for me.

I've been considering these particular Klipsch or Elac as a highly likely purchase, but you (what a good luck!) compared both of them with BRO3, and I made my choice. I ordered the last ones at sale price (luck again!) right after your review, and now I am really enjoying these wonderful speakers. Sean, you were so precise in your description! @@ZeroFidelity Andrew made a great video on this very topic. His conclusion is that we all, collectively, have killed the traditional hifi store by auditioning to the gear on display and getting advice from the seller, but then buying from the cheapest online store. And I'd have to agree with that, even if it's not the sole reason, in my opinion. We can't have it all. Either we support local shops for them to be able to keep the physical location open and all the costs involved, or we'll pretty much be stuck with the online trial periods and have the shipping back and forth hassle.
@ZeroFidelity
@ZeroFidelity 4 жыл бұрын
@@limp6986 - There are a number of factors that have B&M dealerships regulated to endangered status, none moreso than general consumer behavior. The bottom line is that few people on this planet know or care about fancy audio systems. And of the people who are aware of them, even fewer have the inclination to spend big bucks on a stereo rig and then spend hours of their time in front of it. We are a rare breed, indeed! This is the largest contributing factor - by far. Everything else in Andrews video is worth putting out into the audiophile world, but I wouldn't say audiophile behavior has killed off the B&M market. Quite the contrary - we're the only ones keeping them around.

Verry informative video. Glad it didn't include listening clips. I still have the ELAC 2.0 debut. An older version I assume, mine has a circular front base port. your description of the sound of these ELAC matches mine . I upgraded to the Focal Aria's largely because MY ELAC's sounded wonderful at volume but died a sudden death at verry low volumes they flattened out totally. ( I might try them again now the rest of the system has improved). Sadly USA Vs Europe is not a level market with import taxes for both sets of customers designed to make you buy local thus protect their own business's. but at £900 +, the Focal's simply get better and better as you improve your system.

Cramming a lot of quality information into a short time format.I was really interested in the older Elac speakers at one time and I'm sure that I would love to own these or the Bros but I've got a doorway on the back right wall of my living room and to have speakers that need to be out from the wall would be a disaster sence they would always be getting walked into. I finally settled on a pair of JBL Arena 120s paired with a Velodine subwoofer after a rave review from Z-review so I have the Arenas right against the wall flanking my TV. Probably not ideal but have to work with what I've got. Love to hear your thoughts on these speakers sometime. OK, I've rattled on enough, again loved your review.

For listening to music and watching movies, for example, you cannot go wrong with Klipsch. Even their entrance level R series are good. But you have to enjoy crisp treble forward presentation. The rest of the soundstage is acceptable too, though. I know this review was on bookshelf speakers, but I include towers. The only brand that makes stuff somewhat in the “ballpark” on price with the same type of feel as Klipsch (albeit a few hundred bucks more) are the Tannoy Revolution XT6 series. Now that is a fantastic set of speakers that separates them self from the competition. But you’re looking at $1100 CAD for the towers (good price) for those Tannoys.

I have the Klipsch's older brother (RB 61 II) paired with the Reisong A10. The Reisong is a tube amp producing 6 watts/channel. The Reisong has a bit of roll off in the treble, which makes it a REALLY good match for Klipsch bookshelf speakers. It has good mids, too. Absolutely agree that Klipsch speakers do well with female vocals. From the nearly-whispered vocals on "Come out and Play" by Billie Eilish to the not even near to whispered "Der Holle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" from "The Magic Flute" by Diana Damrau, Klipsch nails it. If you're building a system for a small room or a computer sound system (near-field), and you like female vocals and other mid-heavy musical genres, the Klipsch, paired with the Reisong is tough to beat.

Sean, I'm very much on the fence. Need some "pushing". Where I will add these speakers is in my finished basement - in the newly formulated Basement Studio / Mancave created in the COVID year. I have 1 pair of Elac Debut 6.2s (not the reference models), and a pair of Fluance Signature Series Hifi Bookshelf Speakers with a Monoprice 60 Watt SW. All connected to a Denon DRA-800H , purchased this year for Music Listening and for playing music that I play drums to. Both speaker pairs are now positioned at different ends of the room - but against walls , there is no room to locate them 2-3 feet from walls. But seeing this video , it is distracting me from selecting the Triangles based on your room positioning comments. I have "tested" some other cheaper speakers ordered via Amazon, earlier this year and was able to return them , but I don't want to keep doing that.

I have the Elac UniFi UF5 floor-stander speakers and I love the balanced and easy to listen to sound they produce. But with good recordings the detail and realism is spectacularly seducing. Truly the audiophile experience. I'm sure the Elacs in this video follow along the same sound signature lines as do my UF5's.. I find that the forward sound-stage and forced dynamics of some of these other speakers is fun, but after hearing balance for a while I just can't go back because I feel I'm being sold the 'wow' factor rather than being seduced into a deep, subtle sound-space chalk full of detail, layers and depth.... I don't need to be amazed on purpose anymore... I need to discover amazement on my own as I sit with a speaker that gently and slowly reveals it's subtle strengths to me over time.... P.S. I am also using Dirac room correction and the result is an even more focused perfection of balance and depth. Dirac corrects the slightly foreward midrange of the Elacs and provides what Andrew probably would have created if he had a few hundred more dollars to spend on the UniFi series.... It's truly an out of body experience! :)

Danny Richie of GR Research measured and solved the "hole in the middle" with a more suitable crossover. There's no need to waste power through a resistor. Klipsch has greatly overstated the efficiency: 91-92 dB/W is more like it.
@jimshaw899
@jimshaw899 4 жыл бұрын
@@1mctous I followed Danny's progress on his crossover replacement very closely. While he may have made the Klipsch 600M's flatter in frequency response as measured, the final video featured a *blind playoff* with actually very well done samples of the before and after speakers. *Surprisingly* most viewers commented that they preferred the sound of the *before* speakers. Speakers are partly musical instruments. Changing the insides can make an instrument better or worse of a musical instrument to the ear. That Klipsch overstated the efficiency is pure conjecture. Please don't state it as a fact. My Klipsch's *sound* as though they are every bit as efficient as Klipsch says. I state this after comparing them to a pair of A. Jones Pioneers and a pair of Polk towers, all driven by a Denon PMA600NE. My SPL meter shows the Klipsch's play about 10 dBa *louder* than the Polks or Pioneers when the Denon is just shy of clipping. That, of course, is in my room, not an anechoic chamber. Horn speakers are known to "drive the room" well. It's a coupling impedance thing.

I don't think there's a right or wrong way to do it. Own whatever the f*** makes you happy. That said, I see where he's coming from. Finaly I've found the sound I love with the Klipsh RP600M. Definite upgrade over Dali Zensor 3. Even with not expensive Denon PMA-720AE the sound is softer, warmer, larger, more similar to floortanding speakers. Sound just fills the room. Bass is tight and fast. It's not as deep as I expected, but that's even a good news, nothing rattles in the room like it was before. Sound is flowing without tension, it's musical and nice to listen to. Lively and full of energy presentation. Everything is balanced. Dali are more airy, with a little better imaging. But they were tiring for long listening (harsh on a trebles, screaming-like sound even on a mid volume levels), very demanding on music recording quality and not as universal as Klipsch.

@zerofidelity I sincerely want to thank you for the effort that you put forth in these videos. I have only been following your channel for about 3 weeks, but in that time it has helped me sort out what I am looking for in the terms of audio qualities. You have a very nice way of describing what various audio components can, and cannot do. My honest request is that you give me your take on the Ohm Walsh products. Z Reviews and Steve Guttenberg have been giving them truly over the top recommendations, but neither of them have your way of describing what the components are good, and not so good at. They both tend to be overly enthusiastic about what is working for them at the moment. I understand based on several of your recent postings that you are looking to dial down your involvement in doing speaker reviews. Thanks for this effort. I happen to have these Klipsch's and I agree. Especially on older recordings (60s-80s), where the producers may have boosted the content above 7K Hz (estimated), the 600Ms can get a little bright and tiresome. This is true of remastered CDs, as well as older vinyl, and it comes through on streams. I must assume that recording engineers may have done this to enhance brightness -- or it may be because of the too-often used large diaphragm condensers (I'm looking at you, U-47's), which have a rising response that is thought to make vocals 'crisp'. But on instrumental music, that rising response is irritating. Or, perhaps it had something to do with overzealous mastering. But for whatever reason, the CD's, vinyl, and streams of music *recorded* after 1995 or so come through the Klipsch's magnificently. Chesky recordings (for example) put the artists right there in the room. ... Context... I happen to be driving them with a Denon PMA600NE with 45 watts or so at 8 ohms. Inputs include a Schiit Modi 3 for USB streaming, a DVD deck feeding digital to the coax DAC input on the Denon, and a Denon high output MC cartridge, which works well into the Denon MM phono input. The room is 24' x 34' x 17' high. The Klipsch's are placed on a 45 degree diagonal to the room walls. There is an old JBL powered subwoofer in a room corner, set to 60 Hz and below. SPL's up to 100 dB @ 10' seem fine, but not effortless. The subwoofer will be the only item to get replaced, currently planned to be an SVS product. -Just one man's view.

Jim Shaw Jim I can appreciate where you are coming from regarding the tiresome and bright nature with the Klipsch’s I recently replaced my RP160’s with the BRO3 and I’ve come to the conclusion a lot of 60-80’s recordings were simply poorly engineered or engineered to be played on a mono AM radio. I find the better the gear the worse some of it sounds to my ear. I love Motown but the engineering was awful on a lot of it. My fix is to listen in mono and it sounds much better. It not just Motown either listening to the Four Season most tracks sound like they were in different states, the separation is so bad and poorly layered. The better our gear the more imperfection will be revealed sometimes we can have too much of a good thing. On the other hand well recorded music is a pure joy on both the Klipsch’s and the BRO3.

@@balooo2863 So, I'm not the only one, Ty? My salvation, somewhat, are the tone controls on the Denon. A few dB down on the treble control on such material tames the harshness, mostly, but doesn't kill the presence. Previous speakers apparently just didn't emphasize this. But, like you, newer recordings, played on the same cartridge, CD deck, or streaming on Amazon HD Music sound just fine. Unfortunately, or not, I have hundreds of old vinyl discs and a few CD's that need this treatment -- most from before 1995. If I didn't have that treble control, I'd have to change out the Klipsch's. But when the Klipsch's are good, they are *very very good*

@@balooo2863 There's a good reason and a bad reason. The good reason is that if you put multiple tone controls on a stack of gear, it goes all phase shifty and mumbo jumbo. One set, well done, is nice. The bad reason is that audiophiles are obsessive and compulsive, but lack science. ;) I, too, have been considering a Loki. But unfortunately, I don't have a "tape loop" on the Denon to support it. I use all three sources, CD/DAC, Vinyl, and USB Streamer. If you have a tape loop, you're ready to use the Loki.

Ohhh there's tons of things you can do! To make it more entertaining, you can have three rooms with good lighting.. and show off the products at different angles, with different backdrops, in different systems.. with a strong mix between voice-over talk, pretty shots of the gear, the gear in use, and the talking head. Add some spiffy backround music, color grading, all the while using high quality gear (mics, camera, lenses, sliders, gimbals, etc) and you could walk away with an absolutely killer - MKBHD/PeterMcKennon aesthetic. Of course.. that's for the people who actually love film. I borderline hate DOING it (though I'm into the tech).. so I keep things as basic as it can get.
