I took the lock out of my 1910 pocket doors and the mortise is exactly that shape. Very cool.

Right on. Other companies made them with four and five augers for other applications. One of them was the door locks.

Now I know how all 18 rintel houses my dad had , early 1900s all of thim had that formiller pattern and I always wanderd how every house was exactly alike ,but now I know after 45 years 😢😂👍

Almost, it's actually based on a ww1 design by german doctor Samuel hydberg who invented a bunch of German cam shaft designs modern Czech prusa 3d printers use today, related to Skoda works, it's a cool story actually

​@@lasharaelIf it were cost effective to do so they would have packed the gearbox with grease or oil with a service life as long as the gears' wear life, then welded it shut. But something like that would be prohibitively expensive now with modern technology and even more so back then if it was even possible

I've replaced lots of these windows as well and never thought much of the pulley or how the cut out to put it in. I just cut the ropes to let the weights drop and remove if needed. Very cool

Wow! I haven't seen or used one since the early 70s. Used one on repairs on Victorian houses. Over time the original jam material would deteriorate .

I'm From Grand Rapids MI! WE are known as "THE FURNITURE CITY" many brands of high end wooden furniture was made here back in the day. So I'm not surprised that tool was made here.

Grand Rapids is my hometown! GR Sash & Door just closed in 2007 after being in business since 1921. I found some old pics with the business' original sign when I was looking at pics of Grand Rapids in the 1920s and 1930s. Let's see if I can find them.

Apparently this company also made four and five bit versions of this tool, the five version had the outer two bits shortened so you wouldn't bore them too far. Clever of them to make both the hardware being installed and the tools to install it.

Fun fact: These things are still made and used with exchangeable drill bits. Thats how we drill out the space where the hinges for cabint doors go. We use it with a big forstner bit in the middle and smaller normal bits at the sides. Thst way we only have to drill once and the hinges allways fit, simce the drill bits are allways perfectly aligned.

I was doing demo on an old building and it had windows with the pulleys on it and the counter-weights inside, I often wondered why the plates on the pulleys looked so strange but never cared enough to look it up. Now I know, thank you for exploring that for me

Why do some of these contraptions from days gone by seem like such overkill? I mean, it just seems like there could have been a much cheaper and simpler solution to doing this but I guess the technology was just not there yet. Technically its not a drill press, its a different but similar machine. Manual drill presses do exist but have a different mechanism than a post drill

Very cool, I grew up in an old house that had those exact shaped pulleys in the windows. I never would’ve thought that there was a practical reason for that shape in the molding itself. Learning is fun! 😉👍

I grew up in a house that is now over 100 years old. Watched my dad drill into oak doors, door frames, and window frames to set locks and pulleys. This would have made his work a lot easier!

That is really cool. I've been doing custom renovations in historic Charleston South Carolina most of my life, and I have seen some wild stuff as far as secrets of old school craftsmanship. And I have worked with those window pulley systems. I have never seen that drilling device.

Skateboard decks have the four holes for the trucks to mount. They used to be drilled with a four drill deal that Powell Peralta had custom made by Aero Industries of Buellton. One day at an unknown point the drill buts became slightly warped and for over a year Powell produced thousands of decks with slightly off bolt holes. Everyone in town just rode with three bolts, 805 Style😂

The cool thing about this tool is not even addressed in the video: Those augers are arranged so that the cutting bits are crossing each other's periphery. Also, the one in the middle is rotating the other way, so the whole tool geometry is mirrored. Each bit needs to rotate the opposite way as the one next to it, because they are directly connected by interlocking gears.

I always love thinking about how long humanity has had metal hardware and how some of the same things we do and use and find cool and relevant, they felt the same way about... I mean they probably found it more high-tech, but the little kid in me still saw the post drill and went "OOH big fancy metal machine!" before pondering how the past must have felt
