It's almost a necessity for long distance riding. For all of the abovementioned, you're correct. Pull down to expose the nose if it does get hard to breathe. But some dont like it, and i get it.

I believe extended use of a mask is detrimental to your health. And I know this route - sadly there is a lot of (too much!) traffic, especially coming back into Subic. But, over time (200-300km) the mask material will absorb and capture all of the particulate matter which is in the surrounding air (primarily exhaust particulates here), then as the hours go by, you are actually breathing in those same particulates from the mask itself. Without a mask, you may be exposed to some exhaust, but once the vehicles pass, you are breathing clean air. With the mask, the mask begins to continuously feed you particulates for the entire ride. The human sinuses are very good at particulate filtration - at this point after all the covid BS, I would think more people would grasp this concept. I ride in the Philippines and I see people with masks all the time. I perplexes me, as simple fabric masks do not filter out the much of detrimental particulates and at the same time they capture that same pollution/dirt in the fibers - just see how dirty the mask is after a 8 hr ride. Only an N-95 mask would mitigate the pollution. Same for long sleeves and tights in hot weather - the gain in sun protection (use of sun screen is better, if you are worried about getting dark) is negated by the loss of performance due to excessive body temperature. Especially black sleeves and tights - white would be a better choice if one has an issue with sun exposure. The unrealized gains in performance abound in those who wear masks, sleeves and tights in hot weather - they could perform so much better and in more comfort with proper dress and hydration. If sleeves and tights had any benefit, you would see the pro's wearing them in big races, but you don't. They opt for sun screen and proper hydration. And these are guys with pasty white skin who burn easily. 😀 I ride 5-7 hours in the Philippines all the time, there is no way I could do that with sleeves and tights or mask - just way to hot and restricting. Heat stroke or heat stress would result, and it would certainly slow me down to a crawl after about 90 mins. 300 km is no easy ride. Great job by Sean, but I really feel he could perform better with less cold weather gear.
