▶︎Free Video Lesson: 8 Ways to Avoid Overworking Your Painting www.learntopaintwatercolor.co...
In watercolor we paint our lightest values to our darkest, which makes it absolutely essential that you have a plan for each of your washes.
In today’s video, I talk about the goals to keep in mind as you progress through the three phases of your painting.
Each phase of your painting adds on to the others, so have a plan in mind for your painting before you begin. Keep in mind the goal of each wash, and you’ll paint much stronger paintings.
I hope that you found this information helpful.
Keep practicing, keep pushing forward, and I'll see you next time.
-Matt

Matt, what I like about you as a teacher is that you haven't forgotten what you struggled with as a beginner. Too many teachers forget that and as a result, end up being, at best, poor teachers and, at worst, arrogant with it. I've had three guitar teachers like that!

More great advice and honestly one of the important points is to have paints ready mixed with brushes on standby! Quite often an artist will have their palette off screen when doing a demo but it’s important to show this, thank you

Great information. Another tip of yours that has stayed with me is to practice painting the "parts" of a painting. Trees, hay bales, cars, etc so that it is less of a struggle when applying those parts to the actual painting. Thank you!

Wetting both sides is the same principle as putting on wood siding. If you stain both sides of the boards before putting them on, they won't warp outward.👍

There is a Japanese watercolor painter who has 900,000 KZfaq followers (Shibasaki)....who doesn't use value studies, doesn't paint in layers, and uses ONE brush. He starts a painting and doesn't stop to dry it until its done. My point is that the classical 3 layer, value study, multi-brush technique... is being challenged by several artists with amazing results.

Thanks Matt…I am a “shoot from the hip” watercolorist. Truth be known, my reject pile is getting too high. So I am encouraged to try to memorize your three easy phases. (Which I know but do not follow all the time because of excitement to paint). I will challenge myself to adhere to your recommendations. However, here is my problem.. I really like a loose, semi-abstract landscape style. How do I stay true to what I love but incorporate your methodology?
@learntopaintwatercolor
@learntopaintwatercolor 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Estelle, it's hard to know exactly but I would say simplify more and more, be cautious with your details and keep it as abstract as you prefer. Best of luck!

This is really just plain wrong, it is completely up to you wether you start from light to dark or vice versa. Many great watercolor artists such as Marc Folly paint exactly the opposite way - from dark to light.
@learntopaintwatercolor
@learntopaintwatercolor 2 жыл бұрын
True. Either way you are preserving the white of the paper as your lightest value so having a plan is important. That’s the point I’m trying to get at.
@Mattyburnham
@Mattyburnham 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s ‘plain wrong’ at all. Most people will paint from light to dark because it’s a transparent medium. Maybe a few artists use different methods, but if you’re advising beginners to paint values in any order they prefer, they’re going to run into untold perils. 🤓
@SuperReyand
@SuperReyand 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mattyburnham I am sorry, i tend to use harsh words too fast. I agree it is not „plain wrong“-it’s just that i wanted to express it isn’t and shouldn’t be the „rule“. Many of famous painters / watercolorists start with the darks and work their way to the lights. As a matter of fact, you should try that, it seems much easier in a way.
