This is one of the best series of instructional videos I have seen. On the back of this, I have created a stained glass leaded light for my art deco front door with stunning results. Thanks to Alex Tarrant, hopefully I can place some business witrh you over the coming months.

Great , well explained videos, but I agree with previous comment that it is sometimes difficult to see exactly what you are doing and closer camera shots would be helpful.

You have produced an excellent series of videos on creating stain glass windows. I have a few questions for you. Rather than hanging a stain glass window in a window, can it replace a window? Should I add a clear plate of glass on the both the inside and outside and seal it from the weather to keep moisture out? Would this method detract too much from the visual impact of the window? Should I allow for any expansion or contraction due to temperature changes?

In response to 'Claudialej' enquiry re courses, Caroline Loveys runs a course in Southill Park, Berkshire, I would recommend her highly. But Alex seems to be doing a pretty good job with his videos, very helpful.

In response to terry4144; if your window incorporates wide, flat profile lead as this one does in the boarder, it is possible and preferable to have a slight overlap where the lead lines meet. In this window the 6mm round lead goes inside the 12mm flat boarder lead slightly. The 12mm flat lead at theses overlapping points must be flattened before soldering for a neat finish. If you have opened the lead channel out very wide you can also flatten the lead after cementing as Terry suggests. Be careful not to flatten the lead too much, you need some room for the leadlight cement in the channel. Without enough leadlight cement the windows strength will be compromised and it may not be watertight.

Good info, thanks, but your Sun curvature suggests it is egg shaped, are you proposing an alternative view of the Universe through the medium of stained glass - if so, I like it.

Good descriptions but would be nice to have some closer camera shots in the first ten minutes. I guess it's just you and a camera on a tripod? Thanks for the vids, they're quite informative.

Thanks for the video! We have some nice sliding doors with glass panels in them in our house, and I'm thinking about picking up this hobby with the goal of replacing them with stained glass (basic geometric design). For a large panel (130x60cm), would you recommend using foil or channel?

I would recommend lead for a door, it's inherently stronger.

I have a set of 3 eybrow windows that I want to make stained glass insets for. I do not want to mess up the window itself. Is there a way to mount the finished glass on a couple of tension bars to just set into the casing?
@alextarrant4360
@alextarrant4360 10 жыл бұрын
I can not say without seeing the window but if you are keeping the original glass in place then hanging or fixing some stained glass inside the window should not cause a problem. If you want to fit the stained glass to some bars then use copper ties to attach the window to the bars.

In response to jvmmfoty; a stained glass window can indeed replace a normal plane window. You do not need to worry about expansion and contraction due to temperature changes as any effect is negligible. How you would go about fitting the stained glass would depend on the type of window frame of which there are many. It is possible to incorporate stained glass work inside a double glazed unit, you need to use a special Y profile boarder lead on your piece for this. A local glazier should be able to make the double glazed unit up for you with the stained glass inside.

Yes, very, but lead is also a common element in the environment - so it's all about the concentration you are exposed to and how regularly. Use a small fan to disperse fumes to avoid direct inhalation and ventilate the room - and either throughly wash your hands regularly or better still wear gloves. That should be sufficient for hobby use.
