Michael Schenker is really the bridge between the 70's and 80's guitar eras. Most of the 70's heroes, like Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore etc didn't pickup on the 80's shred, but Schenker did, and also was a part of forming it. It's probably because he was so young in the 70's - I think he was just seventeen when he joined UFO - that he was still in his formative age when the hard rock progressed into metal. But apart from being a shredder pioneer, Schenker also was, and is, a very melodic player. On the UFO Phenomenon album that is mentioned here, is a ballad called Time On My Hands, where Schenker goes into an incredibly beautiful melodic solo. It's not technically hard to play, but no-one else but Schenker could have come up with that idea, and also he plays it so well, and his guitar tone is pristine. Michael is an underappreciated master. There's so much you can learn from his playing. One very important element is his vibrato. He has stellar vibrato and he is very masterful in applying it to his phrases.

I saw MSG open for Cheap Trick in Seattle. I was 15 and had no idea who they were, but when they played Doctor, Doctor and Rock Bottom I was hooked. Same thing happened when I saw Iron Maiden on the Number of the Beast tour open for the Scorpions Blackout tour. Just awesome.

Schenker is a genius of riffs, tone and feel, half cocked wah, flying V, through a Marshall and every note just sings! You did a great job.

Schenker is the most under appreciated guitar god. So precise, accurate, malodic & powerful. Never liked the lime light & shied away from fame. Strangers was an iconic live album after Live & Dangerous in 70s. Saw him loads of times in 80s MSG. Had the biker jump suit , long blonde hair and the flying V poster. Wow.

Michael Schenker was playing those rapid-fire repeating licks long before shred guitar even had a name! I saw a video of him on KZfaq jamming with UFO back in 1975 where he played this fast, bluesy, pentatonic-sounding lick that made my jaw drop!

Schenker and Scott Gorham are two of my favorite players both very similar in terms of tasteful, restrained lead playing.

This is very cool...one of my early teenage guitar heroes from the 70's along with Frank Marino, Jimmy Page and Robin Trower. Wore the grooves off of the lp "Strangers in the Night" trying to figure out those licks and solos. I can still hear dad yelling "turn that shit down" 🤣

Loved Michaels playing with UFO,on Lights out,and Obsessions,and the live album,as well as Lovedrive from the scorpions ,his vibrato,on "This Kids",is so full of energy.

Randy Rhodes absolutely picked those licks up from Schenker! I know the exact ones your'e referring to! Been following Schenker since 76. I still have an old guitar player mag with the ad for Phenomenon on the back inside cover. I never heard any of it until a guy from Kansas moved into our neighborhood and I was like, holy crap, who the hell is the guitar player!

A hughely influential guitarist with an instantly recognizable style. Sure, Ritchie Blackmore and Uli Roth were partly or fully responsible for making the classically inspired type of playing popular but Schenker was part of and picked up on that too. The instrumental "Bijou Pleasurette" off the first MSG album shows that he was capable of making Baroque style music and the same goes for "Into The Arena", in a rock format.

His playing on Lonesome Crow is incredible.. Despite his age!

Brilliant demo very informative and great playing I've been a massive Shenker fan since I started playing when I was 14 I'm now a couple of months away from 59 and still in awe of Michael's tone and skill on the fretboard

I really appreciate your hard work showcasing Michael's licks. When I first heard Lights Out when it was released Michael immediately became my favorite player. I'd admire anyone that can learn to play his riffs well, and figuring them out is another skill to be appreciated.

The Michael Schenker Fest tour was definitely the best live Schenker I’ve seen in the dozen or so times through the years. His crowd interaction and stepping to the forefront was really a surprise and he seemed to enjoy it! Can’t help but to mention after playing a 2 hr and 45 minute show he whips out an over 8 minute solo on rock bottom that was the best live rock performance I’ve ever heard, and I’ve seen most of the greats.

Schenker is indeed a living legend. Been a life long fan of his and he’s still going strong.

I was 13 yrs old in 1975 and bought UFO's "Phenomenon" on a whim. Had no idea who UFO was but back in those days, stores that sold records always had what was called a "cut out" bin. These were albums that were marked down because they either had an error on the album cover or just didn't sell. Got home and listened to it and was SHOCKED at how good they were, especially Schenker. Went back the next week and bought "Force It".

"Let It Roll", genius composition from an 18 /19 yr old Schenker. As was most everything that he wrote. Thanks for this video, Schenker is God!

I am a Schenker freak. The early MSG albums are amazing. I could listen to his solos on Samurai and on Only You Can Rock Me all day. Beautiful phrasing and harmony even when he shreds. Cheers to Michael. Well done Dave.

I used to listen MSG: Live At Budokan religiously. All his solos in that album are a masterclass on its own. I liked that you mentioned the countless players that he influenced. He almost patented that rapid fire guitar attack, smooth and wide vibrato during the 70's. When most of the guitar players that became a big name on the next decade where barely learning the pentatonic box.

Actually, the Marshall JCM 800 in the mid 80s, two channel version, was modelled on Michael's tone. It's also important to note Michael's contribution to the Scorpions, especially on the Love drive album which he cowrote and played on. This album broke the Scorpions in the US. Listen to the song Coast to Coast, he wrote it and he plays on it, including the solo! Another brilliant track worth mentioning from MSG is of course The desert song. Great video, I enjoyed it. Great clip regarding Michael’s influence to the rock guitar world he’s the reason I started playing guitar. It’s important to note that he started so young that even today he’s only a few years older than those he influenced.

Into the Arena is my Schenker favourite. I still listen to it regularly ( with William Shatner intro off Temple of Rock ). Saw Michael play a few years ago at Bradford City Hall , England. It was amazing and totally surreal...
