What I heard was an instrument (voice) that was tired and worn in his lower register. However, when his true range kicked his voice was impeccable. I agree the performance and arrangement was designed to build. He may have needed a little vocal rest because his lower register sound a little raspy. This was a very, very nice presentation.

This song focuses on the Crucifixion, not the Resurrection. Plenty other songs talk about Jesus rising from the dead. Let us have that Good Friday experience now with this song. I think a Resurrection verse for this song was added later.

This rendition is right out of the originally published lyrics by Eleazar Barton in 1899. They sing the first three verses 100% accurately. There was a 4th verse (below) in Barton's lyrics. Other verses have been added by artist like Johnny Cash and others, but what you heard in the video is 100% original.
