this demonstration qualifies as a piece of art, not just the psychedelic coil, also the dreadful computer voice ("just kidding, that's crappy!") combined with a reassuringly human voice, proving your professor wrong, testing your fields to the limit with that delta configuration, and the text annotations. Classic!

Good video, I myself love seeing these sort of demonstrations. Would just like to make a correction as to how the flux lines where described. The flux lines do not pass through the centre of the can in a straight line as described,as basic physics stipulates flux lines never cross. The flux is actually moving to the pole adjacent to it, basically, as he described for the 3 coil experiment (the flux lines are guided/attracted through he tin can because it has a lower reluctance than air).I suppose it would look cool if you placed a piece of paper over the stator with iron filings, and you should see them. This is why the motor spins slower when there is more poles. After he reduced the number of poles, he has effectively doubled the distance from one pole to the other, since the flux density is proportional to distance, the flux density is 25% that of the 6 winding design, which explains why it spun slower. Also, I think what the professor was saying is that if you increase the distance between the stator and the rotor (the air gap), the motor loses power, or becomes less efficient. You experiment worked because it was unloaded and didn't require that much power to turn it. If there was a load connected to the original wide can, I bet the smaller can wouldn't be able to develop enough torque to turn it due to the loss of power (remember, air has a high reluctance) over the larger air gap.

There's a rotating magnetic field around the coffee can. The direction that this field rotates determines the direction the can rotates. Essentially the can is trying to catch up the magnetic field at all times.

Do all the neutral connect together with a wire-nut or connector? And did you run 3ph AC? Im wondering if I take the C connector and put a run capacitor on it then just run single phase power it should run as well because the capacitor will provide the phase shift.

If you look at a real rotor in a motor, you will see impregnation of aluminum or copper. This will act as a short circuit to changes in the magnetic field in the rotor itself. When you oppose change, the magnetized iron will tend to remain the same and that is most likely why you couldn't get the rpm up.

If someone could help me out on this it would be greatly appreciated. At 0:08, when it shows the diagram, does "A" "B" and "C" all come from different power supply's or the same such as a series of batteries? Also, does "Neutral" just mean the ground? Thanks.

I know this is really old, but I'm curious whether the rotor would achieve higher rpm (and torque?) if 40% or so of the metal mass on the walls of the can was removed by cutting away even, vertical sections. To me, it seems like you have to consider the less than optimum weight of the can, where the metal is actually quite durable so you have a lot of leeway to remove some mass. How would that affect the magnetic force on the rotor? I think the video would have been that much more interesting and maybe a bit informative if you removed some metal from the sides and top of a can and discussed the effect. I wish more ten minute videos would run a little longer and elaborate on their subjects.

3 phase is just like regular 60 Hz AC but is has three lines and alternating currents on those lines are offset timewise. When line # 1 is at 120 Volts, for instance, line # 2 and line # 3 will be at -50 Volts with line # 2 voltage going up and line # 3 voltage going down. Basically, you have peak voltage on any of the given lines every 1/120 of a second instead of every 1/60 of a second.

Given that 3 phase power is used in this demo, would this motor be termed a 2 pole motor or a 6 pole motor? I am thinking that 3 phases connecting to three of the transformers is ONE pole, and the same for the other three transformers makes a second pole.... ie 2 pole motor.

That depends on which of the three phases turns on first, second, and third. You have three phases. A, B, C. If A has a phase of 0 degrees, B has 120 degrees and C has 240 degrees with respect to A. In this case the motor would spin from A to C because A turns on first. It helps to see a picture.

Jubee Tobbe The transformers' polarity needs to match opposite poles (north to south) each, and each of those phases are connected in a delta (triangle) formation and each point is a terminal for 3 phase power.

All electricity is "produced" at a power station in 3 phase's, then it goes to substations and is "stepped up or down" in voltage but remains 3 phase, even in your street it is 3 phase which each house draws a different 1 of the phases that is why sometimes during a power cut at your house. Some others (2/3rds or 1/3rd) may still be on in the street. As for 3 phase motors they are mainly used in industry as they consume less power than a same HP single phase and are more powerful torque wise

in that last part, there was a buzzing sound.... doesn't that mean it was AC? not that it wouldn't work with DC because we're attracting a can with iron in it, but the buzzing was probably AT the AC frequency, and was essentially the vibration of the can reacting to the field (essentially, the same thing as a speaker)

@kingfaisal550 Well, sort of. This is not any free energy generator/ motor if that's what you mean. The constant switching on and off of electricity from a power source to a coil causes a temporary magnetic field, (which lasts about a fraction of a second) which spins the rotor.

Cool video. I have a few questions if anyone knows the answers? If you added magnets to the interior of the can would it spin much faster? Also, if you did use the magnets and spun the can by wind or water to generate power would you just merge all three phase ends of hot and the three phase neutral together to combine the power generated? Sorry for the basic question, i've been trying to learn more about induction motors and generators and would like to try constructing a simple generator.
@marionetadelplaneta
@marionetadelplaneta 9 жыл бұрын
Aghast Induction motors work by the induction of a current which produces a magnetic field so if you add magents you will just make it stronger at some times and weaker in others since the magenitc filed will add up at sometimes but will substract at others.Depends on the magnents it may slow it down or maybe it wont matter a lot.
@lazyh-online4839
@lazyh-online4839 9 жыл бұрын
marionetadelplaneta as long as the magnets are arranged relative to the magnetic coils with north on one end and south on the other, then once the motor gets up to speed relative to frequency it shouldn't create any losses since the magnets would be in phase with each pole piece of the electromagnets when it is producing a magnetic field. +Aghast Since the motor would be generating an AC signal/power, you would just be shorting the ends, google AC vs DC current to find out exactly why. Each end to ground connection would be single phase AC like in your house but most likely much much smaller currents and voltages, between all four cords including neutral you would have wye configuration three phase power, which could be converted to delta three phase with a special transformer. While you could create DC current like you suggest by using a three phase rectifier, it would take more than what's in this video to make.

@lazyh-online4839
@lazyh-online4839 9 жыл бұрын
Singh poojagroup.com The smaller the better, minimum is entirely contolled by materials and clearances of bearings and rotor/stator tolerances. Because his motor is made of transformer pieces and a can with low tolerance bearings he needed a larger gap than if you had a rotor and stator that were both turned on a lather for perfect concentricity and high tolerance ball bearings to keep everything centered. The smaller the gap the lower the induction leakage and higher the efficiency/power for a given motor.
