I'm old. My career was as a software engineer and I worked mainly in startups. Toward the end of my career was being hired to come into new small startups to fix failing software products and creating first products for new startups. The owners brought me in because they blamed their current engineer team for failing. But in every case the problem was the owners. They weren't relational thinkers. Emotion drove them. Startups take a strange way of thinking. You have to be extremely optimistic, living in a bit of a fantasy world, while at the same time being extremely rational focused on reality. I strongly disagree about "completely understanding the business". If you're getting into a business that is already understood by others you already have competitors. Opening a restaurant next to another restaurant is likely to fail...of course. Create a business that most people think is a really bad idea instead. Keep minimal investment, work hard, keep tweaking to find a solution to a new idea. Amazon was a really bad idea when it first started. It made no sense how it would ever make a profit. They struggled but kept changing until they found ways. For example, they had to create software systems to handle all their products and someone thought "hey, maybe other businesses would hire us to provide these same systems" and that became a money maker even though it never was in their business plan. When doing new things you never really know where it will take you. Learn to be adaptive. I disagree with getting too much advice from others. There are 2 problems. They aren't teachers. They can't really explain everything, there will be many important things they just take for granted. Because I worked in startups I've been asked several times for advice. No problem, happy to give it. Trouble is they don't listen. They hear what they want to hear. That's super dangerous for them. That just reinforces their direction and ignoring things they don't like. Better to learn by trying and failing. Failing is good. Recognizing failure quickly is the key so you have a chance to change.
