Come cuddle up in your coziest, fluffiest hotel robe and we'll tell you a story -- or three. The great Katie Walsh (Tribune News Agency, @katiewalshstx) joins Christy Lemire (RogerEbert.com, @christylemire) to review "Three Thousand Years of Longing," director George Miller's follow-up to his 2015 masterpiece, "Mad Max: Fury Road." Co-written by Miller and Augusta Gore, based on the A.S. Byatt short story "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye." Starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba.

Agreed. I always come back to this channel because it reminds me of what I like so much about Siskel and Ebert. An academic appreciation of the craft but ultimately falling on the side of the subjective experience. Did I have a good time? Could be the algorithm...but the name doesn't help. Fascinating. I found the nature of this movie so moving. The idea that we learn about people and thier pain and their ambition and their drive through stories. That Tilda falls in love with the Djinn because of the stories he tells. And the narration seemed on point to me. It keeps you at a distance with the stories he's telling. So you're drawn in by the visuals but not necessarily the emotion each one. They're broad fables meant to communicate his POV in the same way when we tell someone new we meet, "the story of our lives," they are simply words spoken and can never be felt again in the same way. The Djinn was trapped for 3000 years. We can NEVER know what kind of madness that brings. And the stories keep us at a similar remove. But the film lands on the greatest story; the story we're living with Tilda about her love and discovery with this mystical being. That's where the emotion is, that we relate to her attraction and proximity. IDK, I really dug it. I didn't love it, but I really want to see it again because I believe that potentially could!

Current RT score: 70/92, because reviewers are stuck with MMFR expectations while the public comes with fewer limitations. Saw it and loved it. For me, it moved from a "storytelling" theme to "choosing life wishes", so some of its richness towards the end was conceptual rather than visual. Let Miller be Miller! Cheers.

I for one loved it, and I think I can get more from it with repeat viewings. It's of course a lot like One Thousand and One Nights in its form, but I do think the execution is unique, specially when Alithea and the Djinn have their exchanges about human nature and the nature of wishes/stories. This is the type of film we ask for ALL the time, not a franchise, not a reboot or remake or prequel... Just an original story that we can enjoy and get different things from.

SPOILERS: I thought the Tilda Swinton character was being very selfish. Her wish to be loved just traps him again. He never seems happy once the wish is made. Then she still doesn't free him by delaying her other wishes. She never even asks him his name! Anyway, I thought this was a perhaps interesting dynamic. I didn't find the stories boring, per se, But I think a more stories within stories approach (like The Company of Wolves perhaps) would have worked better.

Probably because I was sufficiently warned to tamp my expectations, I wound up totally enjoying this movie. Expectations are a bitch, and they can screw me up when it comes to movies or music from people whose work I love. I kinda loved all the story bits and talking in this movie. I thought the film was inventive and a little bit thought provoking too. I agree that the last act has less impact for sure. I'm not sure exactly what point Miller was trying to make, maybe just a very basic one of compromise. But I guess i really was in a relaxed mood, so it hit me the right way, and I fell under the movie's spell.

For me this kind of movie to be sensational needs less computer tricks (not that I'm complaining, it was very well done) but even more decadent and elaborate production design. I'm talking Age of Innocence or Barry Lyndon. Somehow I was left with a feeling of watching a simulation, neither a dream or something mystical/magical. On a funnier side, from the start me and the person I was watching it had the same reaction "she's just very horny for him, when do they end up together?".

This is a movie that I will definitely watch when it streams on the best quality screen...in my home. It has Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba it has to be watchable, even if only once 😉. BTW the best Jinn/Genie in my modest opinion is (and that includes all Aladdin variations): The X-Files: Season 7, Episode 21 "Je Souhaite". This television (now there's a retro concept) was not pushing any cinematographic boundaries, but it has great acting and crisp dialogue, plus the ending is "chef's kiss" level.

Maybe I'll feel differently about this movie. But like Ridley Scott he chooses varied subject matter, with the exception of some genre type films. Miller should be coming out with a much more remarkable film, not just visually exciting after a triumph like Mad Max Fury Road. Being a big George Miller fan and the film having cast two top actors I was really bummed to hear it doesn't deliver what I think a lot of us were expecting. I can't disagree with anything you said about Fury Road being one of the great action movies of all time and a movie I have watched more times than a reasonable person should, but to me Miller's standout Mad Max movie was Road Warrior (aka Mad Max 2). I may be a little prejudice toward Road Warrior, because in a way I think that movie changed my opinion of movies in general.

and how did your opinion of movies change after seeing The Road Warrior? was it that an intense action flick could also offer intriguing social commentary? I will never get bored of Lord Humungus delivering that eloquent presentation to the hold-outs at the barricade, imploring them to 'just walk away' and leave their fat tank of gasoline behind. I genuinely sense that he wants them to take up his offer, and will do everything he can to honor the commitment. Although the defenders are wise not to; he's just one warlord, and cannot account for the actions of every vicious marauder in a hundred-mile radius. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/admZjKeEuNPLc40.html

@@cjwright79 Yes to the above and more. Here we have a movie with a very basic plot which sounds more like a B-movie yet has great character development and nonstop action with one of the great chase scenes ever. This came out at a time when we were being told the world was running out of oil, high inflation, and a raging cold world. Miller seemed to capture all this on film in his vision of a post-apocalyptic world. Yet in the 40 years since its release the movie has remained just as watchable and enjoyable as it was when released and has been imitated countless times since. In fact, I just watched Doomsday a few nights ago. This and movies like Bladerunner really turned me on to dark highbrow sci fi films.

Great to see Katie. Maybe she should become Matt's permanent replacement 😁 As for the film, it didn't work for me at all. Loved Fury Road, but like you said, this is a slog. A huge problem is that the vignettes are told through narrated montages. Narration plays more like exposition than drama, so you're kept emotionally at bay. I do disagree with you about Elba and Swinton's chemistry. I think it's good. They just need a better project to display it.

I love you guys, and I'd love to hear Alonzo's take, but I thought this was 10x better than Fury Road ever was (granted FR was the most over rated movie since the Dark Knight, IMO). One moment that really struck me was the concept of mankind basically being quite ignorant, self absorbed and reactionary but has advanced via collective intelligence. Even with several leaps via individuals such as Einstein it has been society pitching in that has brought us to the technological level where we are today, but are we better off? What happens to society if sometime wipes away this collective intelligence? Are we now so dependent could we rebuild?

@@BreakfastAllDay I did see it and I liked this movie. Now the movie fails to make the best use of its subject. With the really unique story it had Three Thousand Years of Longing really plays it very safe. Especially the ending, though that is explained well. But after a good set and a really exciting follow through, the movie starts to lose it intensity after the second story. Now the Djinn actually tells her 4 stories, not three and the first 2 are really engrossing and well developed. But the third story onwards you could sense that the spontaneity and uniqueness is missing. While the first 2 stories were really well connected and integrated in the plot, the next 2 are merely fillers. Which is why the Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton track may or may not convince you. It did not convince me fully which is why the second half is much weaker than first. The movie definitely loses it steam by the end. The way the story is set up, and the manner in which the narrative progresses you would feel that Swinton and the audience would be morally challenged by the end to make a hard choice. Unfortunately that moment does not arrive. But throughout the movie maintains its unique narrative style where 2 narrations are beautifully integrated with the actual display depiction of the events on screen. That is really well done. The actual narration by the 2 leads and the simultaneous display of what they are narrating, feels like reading an illustrated story book. That is perfect. The tone, the pacing, and the visuals which are really very colorful and vivid, and intermittent interaction between the 2 leads like a narrator and a listener is perfect. But this story fails to give the viewers the conclusion it promised. The climax of any story has to be good but here it is ordinary. I give this a 7. But definitely worth seeing for its unique presentation style. Maybe a future cult classic.
