Spring winding, three ways of winding springs are shown, and it is told where you can get wire for homemade springs.
For the manufacture of springs, mandrels are needed, with or without a handle. The diameter of the mandrel is 0.8 -0.9 of the inner diameter of the spring. This coefficient depends on the elasticity of the wire.
In the first method of winding the springs, the mandrel, clamped in a vise through wooden mandrels, rotates manually.
If it is necessary to make a tension spring, we hold the wire perpendicular to the mandrel and wind the coil to the desired number of turns.
If you need to make a compression spring, then do it this way. First, we make two support turns, directing the wire perpendicular to the mandrel. Then we direct the wire at the right angle to the mandrel and wind the required number of working turns of the spring. Then, holding the wire again perpendicular to the mandrel, we again make two support turns.
The advantage of this method is its simplicity and the ability to suspend the winding process at any stage of winding.
The disadvantage of this method is the restriction on the diameter of the wire due to the large force of the winding - not enough forces to twist the mandrel.
The second way to wind the spring is on a lathe. The mandrel is fixed in the cartridge. At the same time, you can hold the wire during winding in two ways: manually or through a clamping device. In both cases, it is easier to lay the wire along a helix, which has been previously planned on the mandrel. For example, you can draw it with a felt-tip pen.
The advantage of this method of winding the springs (on the machine) is that it is possible to wind a thick wire.
In the third method, the winding is completely manual, observing the spring pitch. The advantage of the method is its simplicity.
The video tells where to get the wire for making springs with your own hands.
For the manufacture of small diameter springs, mainly steel carbon cold drawn wire is used. Such wire can be purchased over the Internet.
You can take strings for musical instruments.
Steel wire can be taken from corrugated plastic pipes, which are used when laying electrical wiring. I met a wire with a diameter of 0.65 mm and 0.9 mm.
Steel cables, which consist of a large number of wires, can also be useful. True, the wire in the cables is very deformed. And it must be straightened before winding a spring from it. One of the ways to straighten the wire will be shown in one of my videos.
You can take the wire from the field telephone cable, in it there are 3 steel wires with a diameter of 0.3 mm.
The video explains why heat treatment can be omitted for conventional springs.
It is possible to produce springs made of 12X18H10T stainless steel if it is caged.
Thus, at home, it is relatively easy to produce tension and compression springs.
