I'm glad your recovery is progressing well. I had the open mesh plug and patch repair on Sept. 19. For about a month, I had a feeling like the plug was jammed in tight, but that feeling is fading, and now I am experiencing day by day improvement.

Thanks for these updates Dr. Dave.......always enlightening. I am 3 months post op for bilateral inguinal hernia surgery, done with the Da Vinci robot. I had one large and one small hernia but I opted to get both done at the same time. I had significant discoloration of both testicles which I was told is normal and did slowly go away over time as the blood was absorbed. The right side was the large hernia and that has healed up very well and quite quickly. On left side though, I can feel the mesh making things uncomfortable when I moved certain ways. So much so that I had an ultrasound done on that side and scar tissue was the only thing seen, no recurrence of the hernia. Recently though, I can very slowly feel more healing and integration of the mesh on that left side. My surgeons nurse said that what I am experiencing is not "rejection" of the mesh, rather it is the mesh taking a set in the surgical area, that it is not uncommon and that I need to be patient. Some current literature states that the threshold for chronic pain from inguinal hernia surgeries should be six months, not three. I am 65 and not an athlete (any more!) but was told that walking is the best thing for me so I do that every day. Hoping for a great result for you!!!

It doesn't make sense that they say you can expect swelling for 6 months but at 6 weeks you're ok for all activities. Your hernia videos have helped me and also kinda freaked me out haha. I'm taking my recovery very very slowly.

Good to hear your doing well. I’d be interested to see a 6 month update. I’m 18 months out bilateral inguinal surgery and still get soreness, burning.

I'm just over 12 months bilateral surgery and still have some swelling on one side , think it maybe coming back on one side. Also sometimes can feel a little swolen if I've had to wait a while to urinate.

Hello, Dr. Dave ~ Chuffed to hear your recovery continues to go well! As for your competitive cycling, sounds as if downshifting a bit is a wise decision. . . . .

Really appreciate the commentary! Just had the open inguinal and was wondering about the “pvc” pipe. Sounds like this is normal. Thanks for sharing.

I called it a "pvc" pipe. The PA called it "a roll of quarters". If it is a roll of quarters it is probably $5 worth at least...🤭

2:58 Cycling: I am no longer a cyclist. And never competitively, just to work and back as a teenager and occasionally just riding through the countryside for the fun of wind in my hair etc. I cannot physically cycle now because of an arthritic knee. In your case I would be very cautious about taking up heavy cycling again. Who would want to put any unnecessary strain on the groin area after being subjected to several hernia ops? But have you thought of switching to a recumbent bicycle? I think the rider is less hunched over than on a standard bike. Bummer that recumbent bikes are banned from participating in races!

Thanks for your video, I have a strange question. I am going in for the same surgery in 2 days and I am curious if now that you’re at 3 weeks, how is riding in a vehicle, I am planning a very long road trip, I am aware of clot concerns and I will mitigate that with frequent stops and walks, I am worried about pain, do you think you could tolerate a long road trip at this point, please be honest. Glad you’re coming along well. Best wishes.

The longest I've been in a car since my surgery was about an hour and a half and I did take a break to get out of the car and walk a bit. I was also warned about clotting. I recommend you heed your surgeon's advice. From a pain perspective it wasn't a big deal for me and I was doing the driving.

Did they replace the original mesh from the robotic assisted surgery?
@frugalfoot4973
@frugalfoot4973 7 ай бұрын
From what I understand the original mesh is typically not encountered during the redo ( since the approach is from the outside ). In my circumstance part of the original mesh had herniated into my inguinal canal. That had to be removed and the canal rebuilt with multiple pieces of mesh. It was quite a job.
