I suggest doing test samples by taking fabric from the seam, to see if the fabric will even absorb dye. Some fabric are treated and do not dye well.

i agree- white for a wedding- but i think she was thinking of wearing it for something else. I doubt she would be getting her wedding dress form a 2nd hand store- considering how crafty she is - i think she would be making her own wedding dress and using this for p.m. outings!!!!!

Why not - why does it have to be new - when my sister got married she bought a wedding dress that was a store sample - she lucked out that the dress fit with no alterations needed - only had to have it dry cleaned - it certainly did not qualify as a "new" dress (who knows how many people tried it on) - only paid 20 bucks for it - her veil cost her $100.00 - and she was a beautiful bride - she kept her dress and veil for many years (after the wedding had it cleaned again and professionally boxed and sealed) and then one day she put it out in a yard sale and sold it in 10 minutes to another young lady who was getting married - have often wondered how many more times the dress and veil were passed on and worn by other blushing brides

It doesn't make anybody else sad that someone would just give their wedding dress to a thrift store?? 🙁 maybe I'm just too sentimental but I feel like I'd like to keep it whether the marriage worked or not.

Even if you had a spouse who beat you or something equally as awful? My mother got rid of both of hers, the first because my father was a loser, and the second because her second husband was an abusive narcissist. In cases like that, it makes sense to me why people wouldn't want to keep it.

Actually, I just dyed some wedding dresses to remake them into 18th century dresses for a play.The fabric was synthetic. The lace took the dye very well and the fabric did not. I had to make a total of five dresses and this was the case for all of them.

@LaurinGarcia
@LaurinGarcia 7 жыл бұрын
The wedding gown is more like from the 1970's. My cousin wore something very similar to this back in 1975 for her wedding. There is nothing wrong with making a stopper with needle and thread but if the zipper is made out of plastic you could have just very carefully melted the top tip of the zipper. But if you are not certain about steady hands then the needle and thread is the safest route. I'm sure you know this but make sure the dress is made of natural fibers and not synthetic before dyeing the dress. Synthetic fibers are hard to dye. So many 70's cloths were made with polyester being that is was all the rage back in those days. Everybody wore polyester, it was such a huge fad. LOL! The new romantic look you created is lovely. :)

Rit made a synthetic dye. Granted they don't have as many colors available but they work great. Recently dyed a 95% polyester corset from white to a golden yellow and the color looks incredible

To me it looks like a combination - the roomy sleeves and ruffle around the hemline remind me of the late 70's, but the design of the bodice is early 80's. I got married in the early 80's, and this dress is typical of a lot of dresses around at that time, in Australia anyway. I personally like what she's done with this - very creative 😊

I am a bit confused about this. You removed the fabric and added the pretty bauble to the lace choker, but you didn't alter the dress to fit you properly, so why did you make any changes at all? Or is this a work in progress and you will continue to alter it until you have a wearable dress? Also, I love an off the shoulder neck end for this dress, but it will need more than to be just pushed down because again without altering the fit, it just looks too big and like it is slipping off. I think you should remove the sleeves, turn it into a portrait neckline, and change the skirt to be slightly less full with a side slit, or perhaps shorten the skirt and keep it full. I like the white, but the lace would be gorgeous in purple or red, or even black. If this is a work in progress, I would love to see it finished. This is my first video of yours, so I'm sorry if I seem critical. You did explain things well this would be helpful for someone making a similar change to an older dress, so maybe I just missed the point, but I expected more of a transformation into something more different, right now it is still a wedding dress that is too big for you, just with the choker detached, but it isn't something different or wearable yet. 🤔

The cost of alterations is going to depend on the dress. Where the seams are, beading, boning, type of material...etc etc etc. Wedding dress vary so much there isn't a fix cost. You should shop around. Don't go with the first seamstress you find...unless they come highly recommended by someone you trust. Good luck! Hope you all the best.

I love your videos and all the great advice you give. I dabble in crafting jewelry and I would've gone with a vintage charm on that choker instead of a modern one. I noticed it kept flipping on you. Vintage costume jewelry is more weighted than the new pendants found in craft stores today. Great idea for the choker but hopefully you can find a vintage one that will work better. Estate sales are also a superb place to find vintage costume jewelry, clothing, accessories, and photo props.

I love that you took the choker and clear netting from the dress, it looks so much better now. I personally would not dye the dress, but that is my opinion.. kinda old fashioned that way... lol

Maybe I'm old fashion but i like how it was original better. It has that very classy look you find in a wedding fashion magazine. All those old fashion (60's and 70's) are making a comeback now. Any who, good find on the dress.

This is a bit like my dress from 1978, mine had the same neckline but the sleeves were different, butterfly/batwing sleeves from the elbow, they were so pretty. My Mum loaned it to her friends daughter, I never got it back! I got married to someone else in 1991 and made my own dress, which I'm now going to cut up and make cushion covers for my bed......at least it gets used!!

1. get it fitted 2. take the lace medallion from the part you cut off and place center front of dress. 3. the headpiece is called a Juliette cap. remove it and add a comb. You did a fantastic job.
