Happy Thanksgiving!
I have so much to be thankful for!
In this video we take a look at the Hitachi 12V Li-ion pack. Battery reads zero volts and will not charge. We look at how the charger is designed a bit different in function and we find the CID activated on all 3 cells. After resetting the CID, I mention how I never use the cells after the reset . Just unsure about the cell at that point. Very odd how all 3 like new cells, that are still fully charged, had the CID pop up? Hope this video is helpful and Thanks for Watching!

Didn't know about the cid. If all 3 cells tripped due to pressure, that would lead me to believe the bms failed somehow and allowed the cells to overcharge. Or the cells overheated for some reason. Given the pack is fully charged, the fault happened while charging. Unfortunately I wouldn't trust the cells or the bms, and would monitor the charger as well.

I know, that is really the only reason I published the video. I believed this to be a bit odd. Like new, fully charged after all, but the CID still activated surely pressure build caused it but not just one cell like it was defective but all three the same? like you I believe it only makes sense that it happened maybe at the end of the last charge cycle? Never seen one like it and possibly not again...

Very helpful video. I was able to peel back just enough of the spot welded tab to access the little port to vent the batteries. Only one battery let off gas and I was able to bend back the tabs without breaking any of the spot welds. I’ll try charging the batteries tomorrow, so I can keep an eye on everything.

Yeah, I have not had any issues with my other packs either. Something unusual with this pack I guess. I don't think this is common. I do alot of battery talk on my videos and have mentioned the CID before but never really showed or explained it! Just thought it would be a good opportunity. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the Hitachi.

My experience tells me that the over-pressure in these cells were caused by one, or many possible scenarios. (1): overcharging (i.e. 'float charging'). (2): overdischarging (made-up word). (3): charging/discharging in too cold of an environment (lack of under-temperature protection). (4): charging/discharging in too hot of an environment (lack of high-temperature protection). OR: Any combination of the above. There could also be problems with the cells themselves (unlikely in this scenario), or with the BMS. (JFYI, if the BMS doesn't have high temp/ low temp protection, please do not buy these products. JMHO!) Also, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR Li-ion batteries on a charger!!! Charge them, and remove them from the charger as soon as they are charged. Store them at room temperature if possible. It is also best to NOT charge them above 60-80% state of charge for winter storage. If you live in extremely cold areas, only buy and use Lithium batteries with built-in heaters! Check these batteries' state of charge often, as the ambient air temperature can cause these self-heated batteries to discharge relatively quickly in extremely cold temperatures. Remember this: Li-ion batteries love to live between 60-80% state of charge. If you keep your Li-ion battery at 60-80% state of charge, they will last for about 3 times as long as they will if you charge them to 100%, then discharge them to 20%. (Total Watt Hours over their lifetime) Never discharge them below 20% unless absolutely necessary. If you love your lithium batteries, they will love you back.

Thanks for your comment, I do not know of anywhere that sells these BMS boards. I have not had to work on the BMS board for any of these yet to say what a common cause is.

I found your video looking for a way to see if I could replace the cells. Off the bat, I'm noticing the charger doesn't light up when plugged in. Should I assume the problem is the charge?

This is an older video, but if your charger is the same it should blink red when plugged into AC power. My charger is the UC10SL2

I guess it could be different then. I am not sure about that one. I have actually seen chargers that would not light up at all when plugged in. The Kobalt 40V was one that I remember. I thought the charger was bad, but it was the pack and not the charger. See if you can locate the manual for your exact model to be sure. Best of luck to ya!

Hello, my BCL1015 battery has become over-discharged and I can't use it. Is it possible to connect it in parallel with a usable BCL1015 battery to unlock it?
@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed 3 ай бұрын
I recommend a current controlled power supply for doing this. You have to be careful using a charged pack across a discharged pack as current is not limited at all.
