I wish everyone learning to sing, or even experienced singers, would learn this. I ignored when my body was tensing up while trying to teach myself to sing, and I ended up developing a muscle spasm in my neck. It felt like it was pulling at my right tonsil and would hurt every time I tried to sing… It’s very saddening when you know how to sing, but physically can’t because your body won’t let you anymore. I’m using a vocal recovery program and it is helping me retrain my muscles and build up proper muscle memory. I thought my voice was too far gone but it wasn’t. Its getting better now. I pray to God nobody else ever has to go through what I went through. It was even hard to talk at one point. Please, be safe.. and listen to your body. I can’t stress this enough… because it truly is horrible.. The way you feel is always more important than how you sound when first starting out. Remember that Thank you for these tips Victoria ❤

That thing with the fingers was MAGIC, I went from being pretty bad to hitting every note on bridge over troubled water, but how to I sing like that without putting my hands there?

HAHAHA, that's where the practice comes in! Toggle back and forth with fingers on, fingers off until you are able to keep the throat free with no fingers.

I hope this will help. I have suffered from throat tension all my life. And not just singing but talking in general. I can only talk for a little while before my throat hurts and I have to stop. Some people think I am being rude or stand-off'ish but even talking naturally for more than 10 or 15 minutes starts to bother me.

Loving your videos! Is there more explanation available on this three finger practice technique? As a guitar teacher, I'm overcoming a lot of throat tension (I think from talking) and have never heard of this to help release. Also, if anyone has exercises that have worked for them, please send suggestions! (I've been doing bubbles with a straw and gargling, but the tension seems to come right back). Thank you!

Here is more on that exercise: Throat Tension While Singing? BEST EXERCISE HERE! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fN9jodiUqJere4k.html. Also, I have a playlist with much more: kzfaq.info/sun/PLaWjWxiTysDDDSGygoVWRk_IfZeFI71aj. Many singers find that their speaking voices improve as they apply some of the principles of singing to speaking (like not squeezing the vocal folds or squeezing the throat).

Is twang different from these problems? Because I use a lot of twang :D by the way great video
@Victoria-Victorious
@Victoria-Victorious 4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Twang is made by narrowing the epilarynx (above your vocal folds) that creates an intense and sharp (cutting) quality to the voice. That is a good thing and different from squeezing the throat and squeezing the vocal folds. Squeezing anything is not good. :)

Is this something anyone can eventually do? Is it possible that a person physically can't Not strain. I've never sung before in my entire like and generally am uncoordinated with everything. I can't sing at all. Think worst american idol contestants, but even worse than that. After half an hour of trying to sing by throat feels tired and hurts. Is this something almost anyone can learn? This is a weird case, but some kpop idols sing in a strained voice and it hasn't improved in 4 years. They still sound strained. For one group, There were rumors that although they always tried their best and put in effort, they weren't able to sing how the vocal coaches wanted them to sound so the coach gave up and it was recorded with the straining. Is it possible the song was just out of their vocal ranges? Too high pitched? Could it be they reached their talent limit? Or is their trainer just not giving them the tools to help them reduce strain?

Oh, of course you are pressing too hard! 🙂 It should feel good and relieve tension. It's more like stretching gently to invite the throat to stay open and free.
