This video discusses the importance of maintaining a consistent throttle control to manage both the speed and balance of a remote control aerobatic plane. In this video I am flying my 106" AJ Raven to demonstrate the overall impact that maintaining throttle control has on an aerobatic plane.

FANTASTIC!! 👍🏼 This is exactly what I needed to hear at the stage I’m at. I have just recently had the breakthrough of that “feeling”, and you’re absolutely right. Flying just got that much better, immersive, and fun. Thanks for sharing friend. This will be ringing through my head next flights 👍🏼

I love hearing this! Everyone has a different style and they all do things their way, yet one thing that remains consistent between all of the better pilots is their control of the throttle and speed of the plane. It really was a game changer for my flying. Always growing always learning.

I will agree with you that it seems like something most people learn on their own, I will also say that when I go to the field and fly with people I often have to tell them to slow down. Flying at a top speed is just like driving at a top speed, there is an advanced skill set that has to be mastered. If you are already working to master the throttle, you are miles ahead of the game! Keep practicing!

@@RC-Air ohhhh... Saludos

Thank you again, we all tend to fly differently, some fast some slow. The important part is sharing a love for the hobby itself. I try not to judge and I try to be helpful where I can, and always trying to keep things positive.

That was really helpful. I live your videos as you explain things slowly and really well. Your engine runs so smoothly. I would love to see a video of how you tune your gas engine, if possible.

Thank you and I will try to put something together. I am a 100% believer in Terry Wiles’ method of tuning. Here is the video- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNdkdtyc0LGoo4E.htmlsi=XNW5FJ45BWFZ6h5l There is a one sheet on the RCTEK Facebook page that I printed and laminated and it stays in my flight bag. While I rarely use it anymore, I have distributed several copies to people at the field. Hopefully it will be helpful.

Nice video once again. Throttle control is one of many basic skills I need to work at. I’m not sure what suggest concerning subjects for future videos. You cover quite a bit and there are certain ones I always go back to and watch multiple times. Your videos on aerobatic and 3D moves great and I only watch two or three other flyers for that type of tutorial. I also like the technical video you did on 3D and aerobatic transmitter setup. That is a good one I go back to to review. The airplane reviews are goos. I particularly liked the videos on the AJ Raven. Aerodynamic subjects are good to cover such as adverse yaw, torque effects, coupling, stalls, skids, and slips. You’ve touch on some of these and I’ve not seen everyone of your videos so I’ll have to go back to earlier ones. Really enjoyed the trailer review. Also I don’t think you’ve done a detailed technical tutorial on rolling harriers but I could be wrong. Keep it up. I enjoy everything you present.

Thank you for the feedback. I will take all of this into account for sure. I know I need to do a rolling harrier tutorial, I’ve written a script for it, it is just a REALLY long script. Funny thing with KZfaq, something that has taken liters 1000’s of hours to learn and you’re supposed to break it down in five minutes, it is a tremendous challenge for sure. I have several maneuver videos that are quick finishes and then perhaps I’ll tackle the monster. Thank you again for your support, it really matters.

Its definitely an intermediate level of fine-tuning. You have to be at such a confident point in your "routine" that you stop focusing on the the other controls and purposely concentrate on throttle control and its effect. I liken it to cars where you begin your journey thinking the brake is on/off, you then realize you can fine tune it and finally you realize the other variables are controlled by that fine tuning! I would love to see one on harrier landings. I get them most of the time, but sometimes i dont and break a carbon prop...which is not fun.

I think you are spot on with this. Perhaps it may be a bit much for some to digest, yet I find that every time I got to the field and someone is working on stuff and asks for advice, I almost always have to start by telling them to slow down. This video is really an extension of my last trip to the field, there was a guy there that is a really good pilot but tends to over fly his plane. We spent the afternoon discussing speed/throttle control. Harrier landings eh?? Ugh! I don't break props but I'm hard as hell on tail wheels, that's why unless it's really windy you will always see me switch to low rates and fly it in. I'll work on this one and see what I can come up with in a couple of weeks.

Awesome content as always Don! Throttle control is one of the many things i need to work on. As for future vids; I'd live to see the rolling harrier vid you mentioned and certainly wouldn't mind it being longer than normal. Would also be interested to see your opinion of flying with a low and slow style with different size planes. Maybe a 30cc 50cc and 100cc comparison? Setup/weight/thumbs Cheers

Thank you for the feedback. I took some different planes out over this past week. My 55cc Edge, my 95” E-Extra and my 69” Turbo Raven. I’m sorting through footage now and I’ll work on getting some of them produced. There is no question, when it comes to slow stuff bigger is better. Yet the smaller planes all have some perks.

This video makes me think my 60" MXS needs a lower pitch prop...its on 16/8 and I feel its too fast.. I have a 16/7 I should try. 👍
@RC-Air
@RC-Air 10 ай бұрын
I really didn’t care for the 16x8 on my 60”. The 16x7 felt way more manageable. If you have one of the pancake motors that hits really hard, consider adding a throttle curve to knock down the jumpy. I have tried both the Xoar and the Falcon wood and the Falcon doesn’t seem to bite quite as hard. The MXS has such an aggressive tail that you most likely won’t need the additional pitch anyhow. It’s a fun plane, and it wraps around itself REALLY fast. If that is the plane you are using for waterfalls it can be pretty tricky. With my 85” I would push over and be in a hover before I knew it. I hope you are using the SFGs on it, they will make a huge difference in how it flies.

@@RC-Air See right here you gave me another thing to discover.. I have no idea how to play and change my throttle curve.. Im going to play with that.. yes I do have the SFG for the mxs.. I bought the plane used and it came with the original motor EF was selling them with.. but with a Graupner 100A ESC.

@ArtofTaxidermy I’ve been meaning to do a throttle curve video. The hard hit of electrics is almost entirely why I rarely fly them. I’m a finicky bitch when it comes to my throttle. If it’s jumpy I REALLY struggle with controlling it. That’s why I swapped my GP out with my DLE on the Raven. For me there is nothing better than a smooth throttle. I am heading to an event for the weekend, but I’ll get the waterfall and throttle curve vids on my priority list. Where are you located? And what sim are you using?

@@RC-Air I know what you mean exactly.. this MXS 60" I have Ive been trying to tame it for quite some time with throws and expos and yet find it very unpredictable.. while I have a new 74" Pilot RC slick.. and although it was 2 lbs over (with the set up I I already had before the plane) it flew so much easier and nicer than the 60" mxs... Im currently waiting for the new ESC, and motor which will shave off the extra weight off the plane and should result in much nicer flights. Im located in Alberta, Canada and I have RF 9.5 which i use to get my stick time during our winter.
@RC-Air
@RC-Air 10 ай бұрын
@ArtofTaxidermy that plane is a handful for sure. For XA it’s got some great characteristics, for low and slow it was a challenge for me. The slick will be a good plane, you’ll enjoy it. Lighter will always fly better so good call on putting it on a diet. Another guy in Canada, nice! I don’t envy your winters though. I primarily use Aerofly for my sim but I do have 9.5 as well. We can definitely spend some time flying together if you’d like, sometimes it really helps to see what someone is doing to provide quality input. When I’m at the field and someone is working on stuff, I am constantly taking notes and thinking of ways to improve my tutorials because it is really easy to forget what the learning curve looked like for me when I started back in 2000’ish. What I see most often is that people are always over speeding their planes. These planes fly really well without a ton of throttle. If you find that you’re going fast, do an up line and calibrate your speed, if the plane is climbing, you have more than enough throttle for flying level. Slow it all down and feel the plane. I never could get a feel for my MXS it simply didn’t fit my style, sometimes that happens. You may just have to fly it for what it is and know that it’s super peppy and tumbles fast. A forward CG will help with calming the tail down and unfortunately it will also speed the plane up. I always said that that plane just wanted to be flown faster than I fly. Sometimes it isn’t you, it’s just the overall fit of the plane to you. I totally understand that it can be discouraging when it fights you, just stay positive. Once you have the slick flying, make the MXS your no respect plane and fly the wings off the damn thing! My no respect planes are where I learn the most.
