Some people have said to throw away your Interface if it doesn't have DSP. Since Avid has just announced their new DSP Interface the Carbon, I thought it was fitting to discuss DSP interfaces, and whether not you should throw away your interface.

Hey everyone, being totally objective, THIS IS QUALITY CONTENT. I love the fact that he's helping everyone to create real criteria, that's a big deal in this industry.👏🏻👏🏻 Now, I totally agree with everything he's saying, I personally own an Antelope interface with DSP, I find it useful and I love the sound quality of the plugins and the interface it self, but I don't need it, I was working for many years with my old Macbook pro, mixing even with stock plugins and freewares, and I'm sure I can reach as good results with that just as I do with the DSP based plugins, just because I prioritized education and spent a lot of time understanding how processes and processors works, even now I keep learning, experimenting and trying new things. Invest in knowledge first!! ✌🏻✌🏻

What a pleasure to be able to watch videos produced by someone who really knows his field of work! I have four synths I need to integrate with my DAW. Your videos opened my eyes and I narrowed down my options to an Audient ID44 and a Motu M4. Ended up ordering the latter. Prior to one of your previous videos I was thinking about an Apollo Twin and by comparing specs, in no way it's worth all that extra money. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Real-time tracking aside, UA's need for DSP is nothing more than bulletproof copy protection with the speed of computers these days. HDX was always a step-up as it's the entire mix engine - so for realtime recording with high I/o, near zero latency and negligible load on huge mixes and surround, it's still pretty killer. It's a shame the carbon didn't come out like 5 years ago going head to head with the Apollo. AAX-DSP was literally dead in the water so here's hoping this revitalizes interest for devs to make cool stuff for it.

I think it's all about using ProTools on an Apple machine since even top-spec Apples can't handle the "modern" mixing/sound designing sessions. Good Pre-amps and AD-DA converters are more important for good audio. my choice for project studios is something like Focusrite Clarett 4pre - good 4 preamps+ADAT input (for tracking drums externally) and it's still quite affordable so you can focus more on stuff like the actual plugins which cost a lot nowadays:)

Another class video. One thing you forgot to mention was the Behringer (and similar) line of affordable digital mixers like the XR18 and the X32 Rack, both of which have DSP power and are very affordable. When you need to track with DSP, no problem. But in this day and age with modern computers you can go down to 16 samples buffer size with modern audio interfaces and of course the bounce a mix was something i've done for years but since last year not so much as my computer is super fast.

I love this video! You’ve touched on a lot of things that need to be discussed as far as I’m concerned. I was operating a Black Lion Audio modded Digi 002 for many years, until it finally crapped out on me. This thing suited me perfectly and sounded fantastic as well, so when it went down, it was a huge loss! I’ve been put in an extremely uncomfortable position, as my entire system has been rendered ineffective and needs to be upgraded because now everything is running on 64 bit. I really don’t personally care for a lot of these third-party interfaces that have these internal mixers built in them like the Focusrites and such. I want to be able to plug and play just like my 002 used to do, without being burdened with all this excessive and redundant software. I really don’t need any more than 2-4 inputs, because I’m muti-tracking everything myself. My new PC does have Thunderbolt 3 capability which I love the idea of, but I read that several people were having issues with it, and were barking over the fact that it’s not supported on Windows 10. Do you have any suggestions for an interface that will work well for my situation? Thank you for your video and time.

HD, or HDX processing for latency is one of those things you don't really appreciate until you're not using it. Also, since this is built specifically for Pro Tools, there's no extra mixer panel like other 3rd party interface units. The I/O mixer panel is right in the Pro Tools software. For those 2 reasons alone, I'm giving this serious consideration.

if you’re an artist, you’re creating as your recording, mixing, doing processing, and going back n forth between tracking and mixing. I agree with you if you’re only mixing sessions, the dsp may not be of much value, but if you’re an artist/mixer, trust me, you’re going to want dsp. Worst thing is having to get out of your creative flow, or having to drag files back because they’re out of time under low buffer rates(happens in logic and Ableton a lot). Your final statement is really what it comes down to. What’s you’re workflow? Truth is more and more people are learning to engineer, record, and mix their own music. For that specific cohort, dsp interfaces are a game changer. Also, if you’re a pop/hip hop/edm artist, dsp interfaces may be more valuable to you. Acoustic/live musicians usually only need a bit of reverb, and I remember my mbox 3 came with an onboard verb n monitor system for monitoring before the signal hits the box. I’m sure other interfaces still have something similar. But, 99% of rappers/singer I record want autotune, verb, and delay enabled for them to record comfortably, and the Apollo solo can do all that. So, it’s not necessary to have several channels for that. Lol sorry to be long winded.

As far as tracking after a big mix is already going and latency is an issue, my Focusrite Clarett 8Pre allows direct monitoring (and custom mixes) straight off the interface. Granted, if you're using in-the-box processing on the track while tracking (an amp sim for example), that won't be there, but no DSP, no latency, cheaper, and sounds great!
@SidotiSound
@SidotiSound 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. That does work decent for a vocal but then there’s verb and or compression that you may want during tracking etc. I tracked vocals today for Part 5 of my mix an album series and did the bounce thing and then realized just keep it in the same session and make the other tracks inactive. Duh. Anyways thanks so much for commenting.

I kinda agree but an Apollo interface running UA plugins isn’t just dsp... The unison preamps change their impedance to somewhat match the gear it’s trying to model. And I’m not sure how the converters on these compare on max sample rates. But that was a nice video, thanks!

I hace recently acquired an AVID Carbon and I am very happy. I am coming from the DIGI003 which I really enjoyed and was able to produce hundreds of tracks over the course of about 17 years. Unfortunately, the DIGI003 has reached it end of life (mine is in perfect condition) because it is no longer supported. I am a professional and need professional tools. I have been a Pro Tools user for more than 20 years. I tried a less expensive interface but found it difficult to have that interface and its' routing matrix between ProTools and myself. I am currently working on my first project which will be a large session. So far the Carbon has worked perfectly.

Thank you for your intelligent and thoughtful video. I use an Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt 2. It does have DSP and a suite of high-quality plugins are available. I never use them. It also has a great little desk control unit with a nice big knob and great functionality for monitoring and control. I have an old MOTU 2408 that I use for synths with 8 line inputs via ADAT. There's also another ADAT for more IO, I have a few pieces of gear that will work well with that as well. Plus SPDIF. That's a ton of inputs. When I bought it in 2017 with rebates etc.. it was well under 2k and is a serious professional piece of gear that's expandable. The only thing I would want to use DSP for is tracking with mic pre emulation, but I'd still want to use a high-end hardware mic pre for vocals. There is a difference that is audible to me even in the best emulations from UA. It's obvious even in their videos. It would be nice if the Apogee had a mic pre emulation to track with the onboard DSP of the Ensemble.

The difference between UAD and Carbon is that the AAX DSP plugins have a native counter part. Which makes it so much better because you can go back and forth with in the protools mixer. You don’t even need your carbon to continue on with your mix. As long as you are happy with the AAX Dsp offerings you are good.

I bought carbon - I love it. The conversion alone makes it worth every bit of 4k. I get what you are saying about DSP - you don't need it if you have a fast computer. DSP (IMHO) is more of a marketing scheme used by interface manufacturers to force their users to yield more of the company's products. Digidesign/Avid has been working on DSP for years, and while their approaches are not the best, if you think about it - other manufacturers only answer for DSP is that you use an outside software to record in zero latency...I as a software user am not really interested in using another sofware to record in zero latecy.

What a great video. I’m an IT director and manage AV engineers. Why would I buy an interface with a full computer to run internal dsp when average computer chips are faster and more powerful than any UA, AVID... interface. I replace computers every 5 years because they become EOL or obsolete from the current tech. Maybe high end studios are fine replacing $4k interfaces every 5 years, but I don’t plan to in my professional field or in my personal studio. Don’t be fooled and locked into proprietary hardware just to be stuck. It’s all about being flexible. Spent the money on I/Os, preamps and thunderbolt/pcie with extreme low latency. Leave the dsp to the computer that you can afford to upgrade every 5 years. IMHO I don’t want to be locked into one ecosystem....plus the price difference can by a lot of nice outboard pres or compressors that sound way better than regurgitated plugins of the same coding in square waveforms. To each their own and just stay creative. Music first, tech second!

I love my Windows computer but one thing Mac has over PC is stable audio drivers built into the operating system. Asio is great when it works but almost every audio interface I've used has resulted in clicks and pops or blank audio if the audio buffer is set too low. The exception would be RME interfaces those are rock solid.

Hah! Well that comment didn't age well. The M1 crushes anything Intel across the board in terms of single core performance. Which is precisely the kind of performance you need for anything music related. And going forward it isn't going to get better for x86 either. The instruction set is old and Intel's refusal to retire the hardware CISC to Risc decoder is probably what's at the root of the power efficiency issue. But even more pertinent is the fact that the M1 Mac Mini is less than a $1000 right now and it's put an end to the whole argument of "hey you could build a PC twice as powerful for half the money etc etc". Those days are over now. Carbon on the other hand looks great. I don't think you can over-emphasize the latency thing. That's such a useful feature to have.
@agustinkonsol5204
@agustinkonsol5204 3 жыл бұрын
@@Screaming-Trees When I wrote this there was already M1 in the market. There's no way a MacBook m1 or a Macmini m1 could perform as a PC with i7 or i9 (10 gen) with 32 gb ram or more. At least not yet, it's promising and it has good looks, but not yet. I work in a studio that has mcbook pro m1, and my PC just work as twice as fast and reliability when dealing with heavy projects (lots of VST on the ram). The Macbook m1 just overloads when I open more than 10 heavy VSTs. So even more when you relly on the ram, which you just can't expand in the current m1 computers (again, apple being apple). Sorry man, i'm talking from facts, because I work with both machines, and a powerfull PC is still way superior than a M1 computer. You can use it to every day tasks, it's really snapy, or to record a nice demo, but if you deal with big projects, it's not still the way to go. If you want a really powerful Apple computer to deal with your big musical projects, you have to spend 5k dollars. You have the same power with a 1500 dollars PC. So...it's time to let go this Apple fan beliefs :) Sorry for my english, it's not my primary language. Cheers!

Latency and sound quality overall are so much more important than dsp's or cpu. I think it's more a trend of having dsp's make you a more pro producer/songwriter, since pro studios had used them for decades. But that's because computers weren't powerful enough or ordinary plugins hadn't the quality needed.

This is the first time I've seen one of your videos.. so I don't know if I'm just on another planet or something... First, thus far I haven't been able to get a computer that's powerful enough for me. I make electronic music.. so it might be that virtual instruments + signal processing is the reason.. but it's enough of an issue that I'm always eyeing the DSP.. and thinking waves sound grid versus UAD. I have, on an ancient computer, an Apogee Ensemble MK1.. and the thing I sorta don't like is that it means I have to be on an Apple computer. I prefer Apples.. but there are reasons why it might, from time to time, make sense for me to have windows systems in my work, and so that's a little bit of an issue. I'm working with a lot of hardware electronic musical instruments.. and a drum machine like my DSI Tempest.. that thing could take up 14 channels all on it's own.. so I need a lot of i/o, but I'm not sure I need full on mic pres for that. I THINK, in practice, I'm usually recording one or two channels at a time.. but then sometimes need a tun of i/o. So it might make sense to have a set up where I put a lot into those 2 channels.. and go with a more affordable approach for when I'm recording a whole lot at once. I don't know why I would go with Pro Tools versus another DAW. Right now I'm digital performer, ableton, and reason. I've been thinking about going with Cubase because I'm interested in VR audio.. and it's so expensive on pro tools.. I'm even thinking about atmos.. Err at the atmos level I'd be looking at Nuendo obviously.. Right now I'm thinking about going for something sorta cheap, that can do iOS.. to get me through for a while.. while I try and live on a PC laptop.. and for that there's a MOTU interface that will work.. both via usb and Ethernet.. I've had good luck with the reliability of MOTU anyway... I have an original motu 828.. and they have the additional benefit that you can use them for control voltages with modular. Another thing is the UAD have them special preamps in them.. where they can do the emulations. I don't know how valuable that would be to me in practice. If all this isn't enough to be considering, I've been thinking about mixers.. the sorta that will function as multi channel interfaces. In the idea is that I might invest in a number of, mostly, analog boxes for processing.. and it would give me additional flexibility in signal routing.. and whatever.. using effects sends and what not.. plus it might be a cheaper way to get a lot of i/o... and I like the idea of the hands on side.. there's a lot of electronic music stuff one mind do where you use a mixer as if it were instrument.. so there's that at as well. There, mostly analog, signal processing boxes I'm looking at tend to average somewhere around $500.. so it's not like what we normally talk about for studio outboard.. but the question of getting some nice studio outboard.. especially just for that nice couple of channels of i/o.. and at what point I should be considering that.. is a question in my mind as well. My default thought is that I want to get a number of synths together before I worry about any sorta outboard.. but I do play electric guitar in a rather rock to metal kinda way.. and have been thinking something in the neve style might be important at some point.. and maybe I should do that sooner then latter.. or it's just not real clear how I should priorities it, really... and sometimes I think the UAD pre emulation.. might be a decent stop gap.. or something. Also, there are brainworks stuff on UAD, and a couple of other 3rd parties?

The UAD apollo needs an awfull lot of money to buy their plugins apart from whatever money is quoted for their interface in itself. All that would definitely add up to more than what the pro tools carbon would cost. I found that the Antelope discreet 8 is more of the best of both worlds in terms of better converters and loads of dsp plugins and the icing on the top is that it is much more affordable. Apogee ensemble is the gold standard in terms of the sound quality. Any way thanks brother for this video. I myself has got an apollo silverface and i must admit that it was not a good decision. I should have invested in RME or Antelope...but alas....

I just saw this video. In my humble opinion. This is why I use a console and outboard gear. I am a PC user and I used a lot of third party plugin companies. Slate, IK Multimedia T Racks Max. Acustica Audio, and a lot of others. The buffer speed between the computer and the interface will always be an issue. but there is zero latency monitoring on a console. Most people do not want to deal with the maintenance and weight of a console. The only reason the most expensive large format consoles breakdown is because they are never turned off and are being used 24 7 all day long everyday. Any thing will break down if put through that kind of use. I have no issues with plug ins because I incorporate outboard gear and a mixer as part of my work flow. It makes it a whole lot less stressful on my PC and the combination of analog gear makes the mixes sound bigger, warmer, and more satisfying. Just my 2 cents worth. As far as a interface. I tell anyone, don't feel you have to use UAD plugins. they are not the holy grail of plugins.. Slate, waves, Brainworks, Plugin alliance, IK Multimedia, Soundtoys, and many others, to include some nice free ones, will work amazingly. Its not the plugins that makes mixes sound good, its the knowledge of the engineer knowing how to use plugins the same way he/she would know how to use real outboard gear that is going to make the difference.

Hey! Do you know if the Mac Mini can be used as an external DSP processor for multiple brands of DSP plugins, including the UAD ones? Or do you know of an external DSP that can run both UAD and other brands? Or would you just have to have a UAD processor from them, as well as one that would work for the other brands? Ideally, it'd be great if we can set up a Mac Mini as the DSP in conjunction with an iMac for example. Not sure if this is possible though...?

I’m going for a simple natural sound. Well I was told to do this I HAD to get a Apollo because of the autotune because the latency would be too bad to use and I’d have to turn on the compression eq reverb AFTER I record the vocals and put in post But then someone else says get a motu m2 instead it’s round trip is 2.50ms latency and will work Lastly I have a 2012 MacBook Pro i5 processor 256ssd. Ok so I’m in a big dilemma. PLEASE HELP!!! It’s a complicated situation I got sick of apple and built a pc late last year. But my Apollo doesn’t run and I miss logic, If I said screw Mac and tried to make everything work on PC, what interface would you suggest In order to get as high quality or close to as UAD? Here’s my options - I can sell my LA 610 and my Apollo UAD and invest that both into an interface for my pc that will run smoothly on something like pro tools (which I’d have to buy and re learn (last used PT 7 with a 003 rack control + lol) or get something like a Mac mini now and upgrade to a X4 later - perk being I get to use Logic (my most familiar DAW) if I go Mac route Should I invest in the M1 Mac mini or a mini similar to yours if I do? Here’s a little background. I’ve been an audio engineer and hip hop artist for 17 and my company ABUVEGROUND - does content and marketing - makes most of its money off audio and video editing. I have a pretty decent audio set up. UAD duo (the FW with TB1 card installed) Lawson L-47 for music vocals, shure sm7b for podcasting/voice overs, I also have a LA 610, Adam A7 speakers, technique 1200s and a Rane 72. I’m a little bit obsessed with audio gear and ive worked hard to my ideal set up. I was running that on a MBP 2015 2.2 ghz i7 with 16 gigs of ram. It started becoming to slow for my audio and not even close to what I needed for video. Over heating ect. So I built my first PC last year. Thing is a beast - i9 9990k, 1080 ti, 32 gigs of ram, 370z with TB 3, m2 drive - all the bells and whistles. But... UAD doesn’t support TB1 for windows.... so I go out and buy a UAD Apollo x4. Works great but... doesn’t work with zoom/google hang outs (very important for my job), discord, games, ect I did finally almost figure a work around using virtual cables and voicemeeter But it wasn’t perfect and the process annoyed the F out of me. I missed things “just working” on Mac as they say. So I return the UAD after 14 days before I’m stuck with it. Realized my Rane 72 dj mixer has a built in audio interface (sort of) that actually works in my daws and zoom/work stuff. But the latency is god awful and the only reason it sounds decent is because I’m running it through my LA 610 - which is redundant with the UAD plugs... the plug ins are that good. So I said f it. I’ll buy a Mac mini with these M1 chips and just use it for audio I’ll use my pc for gaming and video editing. But UAD isn’t supported on M1 chips yet. What the hell do I do... I know people will just say buy a new Mac but the Mac equivalent for the pc I built would cost 8k. It’s stupid. But I do feel like audio just works better on macs. Any help would be greatly appreciated I’m about to lose my mind honestly if you can’t tell.
@SidotiSound
@SidotiSound 3 жыл бұрын
Hello. So my opinion would be to either buy the M1 Mac because it seems like the pros out weigh the cons. Or wait for the next round of updates from apple and go with the 16” MBP with M1X or whatever they’re gonna call it. I’d also check out Audient or Apogee over the UAD stuff. I think there is so much better stuff out there. Their plugins don’t sound any better to me then the Slate, McDSP, etc. you really can’t compare anything to a Mac running Logic or FCPX on apple silicon to any other machine. The specs just don’t make sense but because of the tight integration of hardware as software the new macs are simply beasts! The software companies will update soon.
@abuveground4934
@abuveground4934 3 жыл бұрын
@@SidotiSound so the M1x is that the pro version? I just saw something about that where that will be the model that will have 32 gigs of ram. That actually sounds super appealing to me. Agreed on the interface. While I do love everything UAD does. They’re by far my favorite plug ins and hardware. The lack of support and updates has soured me on the experience. But if I’m going to get a Mac, and use logic then there is no real need to get another interface - I already have about 1500 worth of plug ins - which I guess I could sell when I sell my Apollo. But if I do get a new interface, I’d like it to run smoothly on both Mac and PC. What about installing another pcie m2 drive and creating a hackintosh? I’ve heard some people advise against. Some people swear by it. What interface would you suggest in the 500-2000 price range? 4 mic inputs would be ideal. Dsp power isn’t necessary

People are just buying into an ecosystem of overpriced plugs... And here it is... As you are aware of, HDX is not the same..... When the mixing engine is handled by DSP, (luna.. not the same) , we a talking a industry standard , a DAW front end to literally a digital mixing desk... Its entirely different.... Not that most need a HDX system, but theres a reason why it still is untouched in the Pro world. Fact. Ill never go the DSP route for a native based DAW. Not today.15 years ago? maybe. The single biggest reason for having DSP is latency. Forget plugins, if you want ultra-low latency, you have 2 options. Option 1 - Onboard DSP. Option 2 - VT-x / VT-d Virtualization environment that allows DIRECT access to CPU lanes for processing resulting in inaudible latency at higher sample rates. So in conclusion - if you do any kind of audio recording, especially with multiple channels simultaneously, and do not want to hear any latency, you either stay with a Intel based mac/pc which will give you low latency by way of VT-x, or if you're going to buy an M1 mac soon, you have no choice but to get DSP.
