Because it makes pressure on our hearts. As normal human beings, born in a period of peace, educated to love and respect others, seeing a poor man, who probably was wounded during ww1, thrown out like trash, is a tragedy. It makes pressure on our hearts, also because, deep down, you think "hey, that could be my grandpa... poor soul". It's movie like this that remember us why we don't want those evil things to happen again. Human minds easily forget bad things far in time. Most of the scenes in that movie are faithful copies of reality. My neighbor who already died was Polish and Jewish, he said that he joined the Russian army and at the end of the war he worked in concentration camps for German POWs and he felt very happy when the Germans cried like little girls.

He was only human but the lesson of this should rather be not to let hate or resentment get into your heart. People are fooling themselves when they think Germans were especially devilish or inhumane to follow such a regimes will. They learned to resent Jews and when the time came people where manipulated into hating the scapegoat. This should be a lesson of history for all societies to be tolerant of people who are different, to not look down on other people as inferior and to watch carefully those who use populism and manipulation for their own ascension to power.
