Answer for you bearded axe question on 32:40 The lower portion of an axe bit is called the "beard" and the cutting edge of the bearded axe extends below the width of the butt to provide a wide cutting surface while keeping the overall weight of the axe low. The hook, or "beard" of the axe would also have been useful in battle, for example to pull weapons out of the defender's grasp, or to pull down a shield to allow another attacker to strike at the unprotected defender. Used mostly by Viking Age Scandinavians

@@justpettet3506 The sort of axe that Throwing Axemen are holding in the AoE2 sprite isn't actually a throwing axe, but throwing axes are an actual thing that existed and was used. They weren't used exclusively for throwing, true, but they were designed to be throwable if the situation called for it. It's not even something that was unique or special to any one people group or time in history. Native American tomahawks were often thrown as well. Also, it may surprise you, but axes were more commonly used weapons than swords. Not only were they easier to make, they were also more effective in a lot of cases. Much like spears, they didn't get as much coverage in stories more because they weren't as "cool" as swords were, and because the people who could afford swords consistently were the ones the stories were usually written about.

From the AoE2 wiki for bearded axe: "The bearded axe got its name from the extended length added to the bottom of the blade, making the blade far longer than its connection to the haft. This axe was a further development of the Francisca, the throwing axe that gave the Franks their name. The bearded axe could be thrown or used hand-to-hand. Before the Franks discovered cavalry, they fought in massed formations. As they approached the enemy the front ranks threw axes. These disordered the enemy, caused some casualties, and stuck in shields, making them unwieldy. The Franks then closed quickly for hand-to-hand fighting with additional axes or swords." Just because you asked T90.

@@aniketkulkarni6341 It's actually used to have your hand behind the head of the axe to "punch" with it, or have very fine control of the head's alignment. It's still common in some camping wood axes for this reason. Getting your weapon caught on an opponent's shield ("hooking their shield") is *exactly* what the your enemy wants their shield to do. Hooking a shield might make sense if "dual wielding" was a thing in real life so you could still strike while disabling their shield.... but it's not and never has been. As far as I'm aware it only existed in some tourneys as showmanship, like... a clown car. It never worked in combat. As far as collar bone, a beard doesn't offer anything over a regular axe head. You wouldn't be able to "hook" the bone through chain mail or a gambeson. And again, getting your weapon caught up is just going to screw you over.
@Kensuke0987
@Kensuke0987 5 жыл бұрын
@@Cinjrak I won't say it never worked in combat. You'd usually want to have a really big shield like a Viking round shield in your other hand when you're looking to hook your opponent's shield. The round shield is huge, and can be considered a weapon itself with how it might have been used historically (watch any videos from Roland Warzecha demonstrating its possible usage - he based his theories off of combat treatises). Hooking your opponent's round shield away, hold the opening with your own shield while keeping your shield between you and your opponent's blade, and then thrusting with your axe seems like a valid tactic (again, Roland demonstrated this in a spar). I don't think it's effective in the battlefield though - the last thing you want is to get tangled with just one other guy while his friends make a pin cushion out of you. But any weapon + shield troop isn't too effective in the battlefield during age of pike and shot anyway (the disbanding of rodeleros is proof of this). Hooking of shields might have worked in combat, but only in a duel, small enough skirmishes, or as you have mentioned, tournaments.

Bearded Axes have wide blade edges, but narrow parts connecting it to the haft. This gives the axe better cutting power for it's weight, and you can use it to 'hook' things. Howver, it requires good metal and decent metal working skill to make it strong enough to cope with having narrow parts

Yeomen was the edict implemented by British Kings ordering the peasant class to undergo mandatory archery training in use of the long bow, even in times of peace. Ensuring that the British kingdom will always have a pool of battle ready archers to call upon if war were to break out. And the constant systematic training of the peasant populace meant that all the best archery traits was spread and known all across the Kingdom. Producing the most effective foot archers in Europe.

The 'yeoman archer' was unique to England and Wales (in particular, the south Wales areas of Monmouthshire with the famed archers of Gwent; and Glamorgan, Crickhowell, and Abergavenny; and South West England with the Royal Forest of Dean, Kingswood Royal Forest near Bristol, and the New Forest). Though Kentish Weald and Cheshire archers were noted for their skills, it appears that the bulk of the 'yeomanry' was from the English and Welsh Marches (border regions). Warwolf was and is believed to be the largest treb that was ever made and it was used by King Edward 1 of england in the siege of Stirling castle during the scottish war of independence.
@ailius1520
@ailius1520 5 жыл бұрын
I feel inclined to add that 'Yeoman' was actually a class of people in the feudal caste system. It was used to describe free men who were neither nobles nor serfs. Free men were expected to serve in the town militia, a tradition that started as a reaction to viking raids since the vikings would raid a town and be gone before the defender's army showed up. In response, the English and Welsh towns started walling up and having the townsmen learn to fight, just so they could repel a small raiding force at all times. (The Scots and the Irish had a militia tradition too, though in their case it was more them just liking to fight a lot.) After the vikings, service in the militia became the social price men had to pay to keep nobility to a minimum. Strong militia meant the full time military didn't need to be as large. So, one day a week, everybody drilled. The yeoman, not being nobles, couldn't afford the best armor and horses, so they trained with the bow, and they got *really* good with them. I'm pointing this out so people don't mistake Yeoman Archers as some sort of elite military unit. They were not full time soldiers, just men who took their destiny in their own hands and got good with a weapon. The British populace kept themselves well armed. Thus, they were able to negotiate more freedoms ahead of continental Europe. Yeoman archers ended up being one of the building blocks of western civilization.

just a note on the bearded axe - i am not an expert but did some reading on this :) I think what wikipedia referes to as "lower part" is really just the secion that extends "lower" towards the hands from where the axe head leaves the shaft. In that time axe heads were usually connected to the shaft along the entire length of the blade, this 'invention' of bearded axes was that you could shape the axe to increase the cutting edge without needing more material (to save weight) to connect the entire length - it also allows for hooking of shield edges and swords as well as allowing the hand to move up the shaft for punch like attacks in close combat :) This extended section is therefore the beard, as it hangs down from the chin of the axe head :D

It's funny how the name "breaded axe" comes from old norse and would have never been used by the Franks, because they of course didn't speak that. Also the fact that they throw double bit axes instead of the Frankish throwing axe (Francisca) is just a weird design decision imo. BUT yes beard is the term for the flared bit on the axe head.
@OriginalSoulbourne
@OriginalSoulbourne 5 жыл бұрын
An elongated "beard" on an axe is a bearded axe, but the normal curve often isn't called a beard. The bearded axe is an exceptionally long one, like a wise old dwarves beard to match his axe that he uses to chop off the heads of disrespectful children who pull his beard without permission. But normal axes it doesn't have a beard. That said: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisca I dont think francisca axes actually had beards at any point. These were the traditional throwing axes of the franks. All the way from the germanic tribe the franks invading gaul up until even the colonial era where the french colonists traded them with the native americans who created the tomahawk as an immitation of them. The francisca is a very good axe that withstood the test of time incredibly well.

@@robertlewis6915Yes, it's "team" effort to keep it from hitting 0. You don't want to hold it too long yourself or else you all die, but you also don't want anyone else holding onto it cause then they have a res advantage. The point is to keep a battle going in mid while simultaneously trying to King snipe. You capture mid for the res, defend it as long as you can, then let the rest fight over it while you plan a snipe. They could make the map have low res so there is more incentive to fight for mid as well.

@@BaldorfBreakdowns 1. I think I misunderstood your statement, and that coudl work, from my limited knowledge of the game. 2. the monument would have to give significant resources to make it worth fighting over with armies of noticeable size, but if it did, it could give a run-away advantage to the guy with the best military, snowballing his lead. Though diplo would negate that at least in part.

@@robertlewis6915 Yeah, I can't be certain how well it'd work, but in my mind it seems interesting. Taking some backup res off the map I think would be a must. T90 and the others would have to figure the right balance of res from mid, so it's worthwhile but not broken.

While most AoE techs do use real names for things, there effect is quite often far off from what they did IRL, sometimes even the complete opposite
