The Magnus effect shown using different types of spin on a basketball thrown from Mauviosin Dam in Switzerland which is ~200m (655 feet) tall.
SUBSCRIBE: bit.ly/SubHowRidiculous
This video is in follow up to the "Magnus Effect" video we filmed last year at Gordon Dam in Australia which illustrated the effect of spin and air resistance on a basketball when thrown from a really tall dam. We had lots of people commenting that they wanted to see the effect of other types of spins so here it is!

Cocoplops About 1 second apart. Speed of sound is approximately 200m/s so we can find out the height of the dam assuming we didn't know it at first.
@taglini1169
@taglini1169 7 жыл бұрын
The speed of sound is nearly double that, at roughly 340m/s. Using this and the speed of light (3.0x10^8m/s) you can work out that the dam is about 138.7m
@rubygptai
@rubygptai 7 жыл бұрын
Cocoplops You don't need the speed of light to calculate the height of the dam. Looking at the video, it takes approximately 0.6 second for the sound to reach us. Multiply that by the speed of sound (340m/s) and you'll get the distance.
@taglini1169
@taglini1169 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know that but I always do these kinds of calculations (such as the thunder/lightning one) by using both speed of light and speed of sound

In 1976 I shot a basketball from the corner of the court. I was behind the backboard. The ball left my hand, I put a spin on it, the ball hit the backboard, and went in. So in fact the ball started behind the backboard, went in front of the backboard, then started to move towards the back of the backboard, hit the front of the backboard, and went in. I could see the ball curve on the way to the basket and it was so cool. It was one of three amazing shots I did and remember from 40 years ago.

The reason you saw a greater effect on the forward spin was due to the initial velocity you produced in the horizontal direction during your throw. The back spin had almost no initial velocity in the horizontal direction, since the parabolic path it took after being thrown was so sharp. Magnus depends on the instantaneous velocity, so the back spin needed to build velocity before the effect really became apparent.

There is another force at work, which you haven't considered, gyroscopic precession. A rotating mass, when accelerated across it's axis of rotation, will precess (move) 90 degrees to the direction of acceleration, in the direction of it's front edge/surface. It works in the same direction as the Magnus effect. The ball, with backspin would move away from the dam if it were dropped in a vacuum, just not as much. It might be interesting to drop a rotating thin disc, like an LP record, from the dam to see how it moves. With backspin, it should move away from the dam even though the magnus effect would be minimal, on the thin edge.
@harrybolzac5932
@harrybolzac5932 6 жыл бұрын
The reason why it was more dramatic with the forward spin is because of the same principles as the comment I left on the other video except vice versa. The Magnus Effect sucked the ball into the wall of still air(which is the dam itself)

I wonder what the effect would be like if there was a weight on one point on the ball, like taping a role of dimes to the side of the ball. How would that affect the Magnus effect?
@basti890

The reason why the sidespin (the last test like spinning the ball on the finger, with vertical spinaxis) falls mor stabilized, is the same reason why artillery granades spin around an axis in direction of movement.

I'm guessing baseball isn't big in Australia. "It was a bit of a knuckleball..." Exactly! The reason knuckleballs knuckle is the lack of spin (in reality very slow spin). Harnessing the Magnus is what makes for a good pitcher. The spin determines the type of break, or lack of, in a pitch.

The straight drop went askew because of wind and other effects. The horizontally spun ball before it landed true bc the spin stabilized it like a bullet through a rifled barrel. Interesting

This Is How They hook and slice golf based on the side spin and based on the backspin is the difference between a drive and the sand iron, and why there are a limited number of dimples allowed on tournament balls, you can see how a hole-in-one really becomes a very lucky and talented shot

It's basic aerodynamics, you should maybe read a little about both Bernoulli and Venturi's principles. It's the same theory as the reason why planes fly or sailboats sail. Pretty awesome experimentation though!
@wilfdarr

I wonder how much of the front spin vs back spin was Coriolis effect, because if both are spun the same, then the travel due to aerodynamics alone would be the same.

You should create a clamp with cups on each side, set on ball bearings. Place the ball within the cups and then use an air gun, pointed at the bottom of the ball, to give it major back spin. Then, open the clamp.
@vaughngordon1489

well, that's why rifles put a spin on the bullet. It makes it more accurate and shoots the same every time. Whereas no spin you get the knuckleball effect.
