Here is a quick video for the O-ring location ---- • Warthog O-ring locatio...
This is a complete disassembly / breakdown of the thrustmaster hotas warthog joystick flight controller. Mine had HORRIBLE stiction. This video explains why this is and how to fix the problem. If you have not replaced your grease. When you take it apart for the first time it will have red grease in it.
Lots of people are replacing with silicone grease but I have found that it does not hold up and you need something thicker that has a higher pressure rating. I have written multiple production experts and have found out that the grease I use is non reactive and plastic safe. It is cacium sulfonate based. the link to it will be below. USE A PLASTIC SAFE GREASE AND MAKE IT THICK. Synthetics are usually great.
My Grease www.lewmar.com/products.asp?id...
you can find it in almost any marine store.

This video worked great for me. Good discussion and helpful points. Of note, if you don't have circlip pliers, an allen wrench will work just fine. I put the short end of the L-shaped allen wrench into the ball joint, and then I just had to tilt it back to get leverage and pop out the swivel joint holders.

Thanks for this video! I'm strictly a flight-sim hobbyist and started flying within 6 months of the release of MS FSX. Shortly after I installed the 3-DVD FSX Gold, w/Acceleration disc, (around mid-2011), I began the long journey of learning how to build and overclock, high-perf desktop computers needed to handle the 3rd-party addon software. But that's another story for another time. Then, I bought my Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS on December 2011 from Amazon. I eventually found some light 'sticking' or slight drag in the spring return roughly 3 or 4 years later, (but not as bad as yours). As an experienced, first-class machinist for over 25 years, (now retired), I new that the best (affordable) grease to use on this system was the white-Teflon grease. I applied a light, nearly transparent coat of Teflon grease to the hard, ABS plastic ball and some to the spring. That was all I did and the control system operated perfectly right up until about two days ago, January 21st, 2024. BTW; that comes to 13 years from initial purchase and about 9 years since I greased it for the dragging issue, (for those of you who haven't been keeping track 😉), Then two days ago, (again, JAN 21 2024), I was setting up the controllers to take a flight in MSFS 2020. Unfortunately, I carelessly rested the Warthog's stick controller on my desk as I went to place my Rudder controller in position. I didn't notice that my shoe caught hold of the dangling USB cable from the TM controller's base and when I stepped back, the entire base and stick swept from the desk and hit the floor with the J-Stick grip leading the way! BAMMM! Just like that, a 13-year old controller came to an end. The stick, still tightly connected to the threaded collar, broke the ABS plastic that is part of the one-piece molded section comprising the universal ball for the X & Y axis. In DEC 2011, the Warthog only cost $398. Today, that same system costs $150.00 more than that, (Amazon's price is $550). OK, so I immediately ordered another Warthog base hoping that no damage had come to the Grip-stick. In fact, the base just arrived to my house and I'll be testing it later today to assess the Grip's functionality. I'm crossing my fingers... But I think I can attribute the reliability of the Thrustmaster Warthog flight controllers to the fact that I've always kept them covered, protected from dust. Of course, the Warthog controller system was built to last and meant for serious simmers. TM has proven it to still be one of the best flight-sim controllers available today. It was worth every penny they charged in 2011 and it's still worth every penny today. In fact, way before the availability of those "Meza Mount-Dust Covers" that you can buy today on Amazon (custom-fit to cover the TM control system), I bought the same covers from a private designer who sewed these covers himself, way back in 2011. In my opinion, he seems to be the original designer. He may have sold the design to Meza Mount but he was selling them as a member of the Thrustmaster Warthog original blog, (no longer on line). I also have the Honeycomb Alpha/Bravo yoke controllers for aircraft with yoke systems and I keep them covered and protected from dust as well. If nothing else, I would strongly suggest that anyone who owns expensive, advanced control systems like these to not underestimate just how bad dust can be when it comes to electronics and moving parts in these controllers. ALWAYS cover them when they're not in use! FWIW PS Thanks again for the video!

Pre-ordered my Warthog like a month before release, what, five years ago now? Was super hyped about it and to this day I absolutely love it and think of it as the best investment I've ever made in simming. But I can't deny the stiction has been a real pain in the ass and caused many a gun run to veer slightly off or led to some wonky ass landings. I've known for a long time that I'd probably be better off with a cheaper stick but I love the warthog so much I've just put up with it. Well, after a particularly frustrating couple of attempts to fuel in DCS I decided to fix the damn thing. Gotta say, thanks for the guide man. Stick is like pure silk now, it's what I should have gotten for my $500 back when I ordered it. I'll dedicate my next tank of gas to you. Cheers

Great video, I followed all your advice and now my stick is just as smooth! As far as recalibration goes: I found that if I played with the tension of the two screws holding in the sensor that I could get the stick to center without having to re-adjust the dead-zone or calibrating. If you recalibrate or make your deadzone larger then you lose that extra tiny little bit of travel/range/precision from the stick. P.S. make sure the ground wire and ribbon cable coming out of the upper socket lay flat and fit in the small crater underneath the slotted half-ball that was held in by the two pins (The one he got out with the pliers). When I put mine back together they were slightly twisted and I felt it when I tried to move the stick. I had to get help from someone to make sure tension was applied so they didn't pinch the second time I was putting it together.

Al, I have changed my main spring, had some custom springs made up till I got one that worked. The trick is if a balance between the main spring and the 4 small base springs. Having customs springs made up at a shop close to you is cheap. Bare in mind, when the custom main spring is compressed, you must have the same height as the compressed 'original' spring, if its higher you will loose movement in the stick axis. Mine works great now, I still want to adjust the 4 base springs though, but flying A-10,IL2, and the Huey is a breeze. I could not fly the Huey comfortably on the stock setup, just to much tension. Ronin, thanks for the vid, very interesting, I think I am lucky though and dont have any stiction issues.

@RippleLife
@RippleLife 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads up on the nylon. I have actually been very happy without using an o'ring at all. As for your slack. I'm not quite sure what you mean. If you mean a dead zone then try to calibrate the stick if you havn't already. Also check in-game settings for deadzones as well. If you mean that the stick is loose in the center (no spring tension) then I would mainly check proper assembly and make sure your not running that spring mod where you take out the main spring. A loose stick tells me that you don't have enough tension on the stick. Good luck with it and thanks.

Hey man, thanks for the great video - liked and subscribed! I have a 6 year old warthog that has developed a bit of play (twist) over time and now starts registering a trigger pull as all buttons being pressed but only when the stick is deflected in certain directions. I pulled it apart expecting to see a frayed wire causing a short, but everything looks okay at first glance. I haven’t cleaned all of the grease off of all the wires and separated the components enough to see every bit of them yet, so maybe I missed it. Can you give me some guidance?
@RippleLife
@RippleLife 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the sub. Yeah mine has some twisting as well. Ok so... Keep in mind, it is possible it's a software conflict in controls. Assuming that's not the issue. I would first check all of the wires and be sure there are no pinches or breaks. Make sure they are all still firmly soldered. If so it may be the trigger mechanism. And really at this point, it could be the stick section or something wrong with the board. Try to recreate the issue and narrow down what's happening and where it's happening, when you have the issue. Remember that I have seen control conflics do this type of thing. I hope this helps a little. It's all I've got for now lol. Have a good one and good luck.

I know right. BUT it is seriously better than anything out right now. And by far not just a little. I recently picked up an x55 for my girlfriend. Thinking they may have improved over the last year. I will be doing a review on it soon. But needless to say the x55 is like handling paper. I feel like I'm going to crush it in my grip or break it by moving it. It is sooooo cheaply made. You can't even move the throttle on the x55 without the whole thing sliding forward or back. The x65 is the only thing that comes close but way to many problems and I like my stick to actually move. If you can get a hold of a black mamba. That is the best stick out there. But it is impossible to get one and you have to order it months in advance.

ronin51670 No problem, and I sure will! Would you mind sharing what grade of NLGI the grease you're using is? I found the courage to do the disassembly & re-greasing (thanks to you!) and used a plastic safe multi purpose grease with NLGI grade of 2, and after re-assembly I found out that my stiction is actually worse than it was before. And now there is a faint plastic to plastic abrasive noise (though I didn't pay attention was it there before the procedure) when I rotate the top ball hat in place. I'm gonna try a different more thicker grease and hope that will solve the problem, but I'm also a bit worried that I went overboard with the sanding and actually changed the dimensions of the ball joint too much. (or made it too coarse)

***** 2 up to a 3 for the nlgi. Just a couple things to check. the o- ring could be loose. if it is you need to pull it. it is quite possible you put the upper section of the ball assembly on where the wires are not going through the notch in the inside side side swivel. If it is the latter then you really need to check because it can break the wire. If something is grinding then something did not go back together properly. Oh make sure that upper ball section that connects to the stick is popped all the way on the ball. If not it will ride on the wires. I know I'm repeating but the only thing I can think of really grinding is the wires. That would also cause it to stick. Oh and make sure there is plenty of grease on the upper section of the inside ball. The new video will go a little more in depth about causes and fixes.
@Oelmen
@Oelmen 9 жыл бұрын
ronin51670 Ok and thanks for a detailed answer! What grade of nlgi was this exact grease you used? Some people here already said that they couldn't find the O-ring inside their Warthog, and this was the case for me too. Might be hidden? Hehe, on my first try of the disassembly / assembly I DID manage to break my ground wire as after the re-assembly it was stuck somewhere it didn't belong and got scratched in half. But I replaced it with a new one which worked fine. When the wire was out of place there was a bit more stiction than there is now. After that I really focused on the wire notches (on the upper ball section where they come out of the electronics and the inner section, they should be lined up right?) and am pretty sure I got them right this time (double, triple, quadruple checked etc..) I simulated the upper ball section movement several times (re-greased) by putting pressure on it while moving the upper ball and got the light grinding sound. The section however moves pretty nicely without the pressure, but that I assume is only natural.

Not sure if I broke my PTFE ring, but after applying some considerable pressure in realizing that the software axis did not go to full forward unless that force was applied, and some large, sweeping movements around the forward hemisphere of the stick's range of motion, I encountered an odd spike and sudden give in resistance that I did not feel afterward. Now, it feels like (mind you I have a nice case of OCD) there is less resistance moving forward than backward. Picking up the base and holding it in the air, letting the weight of the stick pull it down for even force appears to show this, as it sags down when I have the forward side down, but remains erect when the backside is down. Pretty sure it's that damned ring and I've used the thing for only a freaking hour and a half. I opened it and it appears to be the case, and if TM is as shitty as checking for it having been opened as they are at building them then I'll probably be able to have them fix it anyway. If not, it'll be a fun thing to tinker with as I'm used to all of the shit I buy being broken anyway.

So I just got my Warthog today. I am concerned about the sticktion issue, though I haven't noticed any yet. This seems likely a highly involved process, and I'm not too comfortable dismantling the electronic components in the flight stick. Is there a less invasive (albeit, with the understanding that it would be a less effective) method? It would seem if you just dismantle the stick from the top and not go underneath you could reach almost all of the locations he greased, even if you couldn't sand and smooth the seems. Would this be an ok Temporary solution for someone who is unwilling to risk having to Solder anything? Or would it be a MUCH less effective than this?

Hi Ronin, I hope you can help me. I recently bought a second hand thrustmaster warthog stick and throttle in good condition. There was a problem with the stiction of the flight stick though and following advice I re-greased the ball and socket joints up. It now moves smoothly but I have a much more crucial issue now! When I move the stick; the input on the screen is wild and erratic and flicks all over the place. The computer doesn't ever know where the stick is. The roll and pitch just flick everywhere on the scale all the time. It is defintely half working because it only flicks around when I move the stick. I thought I might have grease on the sensor so I took it apart and cleaned it again but it still does it. I re-calibrated the stick but that didn't help. Argh now this thing seems totally mad and I can't use it. Have you heard of this problem before and know of a way I can fix it? It is defintely something to do with the hall sensor and not the buttons. Could I have put somehting back in the wrong way round? Please help me, at the moment I have a very very expensive paper-weight. Thank you in advanced,
@RippleLife
@RippleLife 9 жыл бұрын
I haven,t heard of this issue. The only thing I can think of is possibly a cracked pivot ball may be throwing the sensor off. Is there anything cracked on the inside? Double-check the magnet as well Another thought is that the sensor board may be bad. You can order them from TM. Sorry to hear about the paper weight though. I know the feeling.

CH is not what they used to be. So be careful with that. They still use older sensor tech. The warthog will last forever. the only problem is the stiction and that is easily fixable and when it is fixed..... It is the best stick by far in my opinion. I have owned all the major HOTAS systems out there. saiteck x65 falls second and the throttle are great on the x65. I still like the throttles on the warthog better but the x65 throttles a close second. takes a while to get used to the stick and I never did like it not moving. A moving joystick gives me more emersion.

Hey, I have a question, I have opened the 2 screws on my brand new warthog throttle for the optional afterburner detent and in the process dropped both screw rings into the space and I can't get them out, I've tried shaking the throttle upside down and eventually they've stopped making any sound inside meaning that they got stuck somewhere, and the throttle works fine, so what's your opinion, is there a risk of something getting damaged in there? should I risk it and open it up (since I literally just got it yesterday)? any help would be greatly appreciated :)

I figured it out what had to be done and for those who have the same issue I had, here is how to fix it. You need to download "TM Joystick Calibration tool 1.13.rar" and for the throttle, "Throttle Warthog Calibration (V1_07)_22_07_2010.rar" Look for it @ the Eagle Dynamics forums.

Hi, I am about to do this fix, but before I start I would like to completely understand the construction, WHY are these swiwel plugs a problem, and exactly WHAT do I achieve by expanding the holes that they go into....?
@RippleLife
@RippleLife 6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Make sure you watch the video first. The pins are too tight fitting causing friction. Also there are a couple of additional steps. 1. If you remove the o-ring..(I RECOMMEND YOU DO) slightly bevel the edges of the metal ring the o_ring was stuck to. 2. Roll sandpaper and slightly sand the 4 holes in the white spacer that the mounting poles go through. 3. The rectangle hole that the magnet part and wires go through in the half inside ball swivel that has the holes for the pins you were talking about. Well smooth out/sand the corners and inside of it by rolling about 3 or 4 inches of sandpaper and sticking it inside and sanding lightly. Should be stiff enough rolled to fit. The inside swivel should move freely but not loosely. After you sand pins and the holes in the half ball thingy. Hope this helps. Good luck and relax and take your time. The grease is very important. Wrong grease will make sticky or won't last.

@RippleLife
@RippleLife 9 жыл бұрын
I will do a video in the future on it.but at the moment I am quite busy with other projects. My guess on the spiking is dirt or dust. I know it is broad but it really is the most common cause for that problem. try to use canned air to blow it out. Also the next highest cause for it is interference of another usb device. Unplug all usb devices accept the throttle and try it. if it is fine. Then plug them in one by one until you get the spikes. And then update the driver for that particular device. Hope this helps.

It probably has it but you don't see it. it goes on metal part of what I called the pressure plate in the video. @ 13:09 in the video in my right hand is what im calling the pressure plate. if you look at the inside of it as I am holding it..... the O-ring would go on that metal ring inside so it would be in between the flat portion that runs around the ball and that metal ring in the "pressure plate". As I put in the video I didnt use it so I just placed it on top to keep it out of the way. mine is doing nothing. But normally it adds a slight cushion to the spring and pressure to the ball. Mine is still working perfectly and honestly cannot see it any better. So at this point I do not ever intend on replacing the o-ring.

Has anyone tried to do DCS f18 aerial refueling with this warthog stick after performing this fix?? I have a brand new warthog stick purchased a few weeks ago. Although the stick is nice and heavy and I guess "realistic" feeling, I'm finding it impossible to do aerial refueling. The stick is way too stiff and it just doesn't have that precision and finesse that's required for refueling.

@RippleLife 10 күн бұрын
@eknight101 Hi, the newer sticks seem to have a little more tension in the middle indent. Unless you have stiction. The fix may do little to help. As that center pressure comes from the spring. It will wear in over time though and get a little looser. I purchased the new TM AVA base and it is amazing. Really a great upgrade. Can't imagine anything smoother. A little pricey but I think worth it in the long run. I put a medium cam on pitch and a soft cam on the roll and tightend the soft one all the way. Using the jet cams. If anything, the AVA cams need a little more indent.

Hi, nice vid, sort of oddly trippy with the split camera view, music and "nekkid in the basement" vibe :D J/K, I just bought one of these sticks and am noticing the same thing, so they are still making them this way as of July 2014, which seems stupid for such an expensive stick. Is there anywhere that this can be done professionally and where it won't void the warranty?
@RippleLife
@RippleLife 10 жыл бұрын
I had called these guys before and spoke with them. since the stick is designed to be able to be taken apart and mounted on different platforms. They had told me opening it up and replacing the grease did not void the warranty(that is what they told me I would ask them yourself). The other stuff not sure about. Dispite what others might say they have pretty good customer service and will replace the stick readily. It might take 2 days for them to respond to the email if you send one but they do reply and are nice. And if you just got it ask for a shipping lable to be sent to you so you don't have to pay shipping. IMO this stick is still the better one over all the other H.O.T.A.S. systems and well worth the price. It has by far the best tracking and control. But it does have that flaw. But once fixed it's amazing.

Mirandorl It has been almost 8 months since My stick has been rebuilt and it is just as smooth as when I finished it. I called the company for this grease and it's plastic safe (non reactive). No problems at all. Also keep in mind I took the rubber flat O-ring out and put it on top just to keep from loosing it. Thant rubber O-ring may make a small difference in how smooth it operates. With the grease i'm using it has shown no wear whatsoever on the surfaces and it also slightly reduces the tension on the stick. As I mentioned before check the warrantee thing first I would hate for you to loose a warrantee on a new stick unless your prepared to. This stick is very easy to replace parts in and order parts for. I plan on making a better video in the next couple months (with a shirt on lol).

Mirandorl hi mate thrustmaster came back to me. They gave me instructions to strip it just as far as but not including the ball, as this would invalidate the warranty. I opened it up and the gaskets were fine. I think the main issue with it is 'hanging off' the stick, eg having it on the table and literally hanging my arm off it. If I support the weight of my arm its better and I wonder if it's intended to be between the knees. Still though, the ball movement is poor when stripped down as in your video, so it is slightly disappointing. I may try getting more grease as suggested by TM

Hey here's a fun fact, and something you might want to let people know. I had uneven resistance, and I more or less fixed it. Basically, when you take out that floating black element with the white ring on top, you might notice that the screws are not completely flush. At least mine weren't. I screwed them in, and the resistance became enormous, as well as making me need to really push to get the thing to even go onto the poles before I reassembled. That got me to wondering about it stretching and the holes getting smaller due to the pressure, and I loosened the screws enough to give it a few thousandths of an inch of play (just eyeballed it), and lo and behold there's even resistance save for the front which I left a tiny bit too tight. When I go to regrease it I'll address that, but as far as left and right goes, where discrepancies are much more annoying, it's pretty much exactly the same. So a troubleshooting step would be to check that white ring and perhaps back the screws out a tiny bit so it jiggles a little. Just something I noticed. Also told TM to shove it when it came to RMA and that I'll just call for parts. I'd be without the thing for months if I sent it out to them...

Maybe you should reconsider the greese you used. It can make plastic brittle after some time: Silicone greases, for example, are lubricants that blend well with this material, increasing the life span of components and significantly improving their performance. A silicone grease can be considered the perfect plastic lubricant, as it tends to be inert towards plastics and elastomers.
@RippleLife
@RippleLife 4 ай бұрын
Hello and thanks for the question. If Silicone works great for you then have at it lol....The grease i am using in the vid is a plastic safe grease. Silicone, actually a few types were tried and they do not stand up and do not have a good enough ngli rating. Or I should say they are just to thin and do not lubricate after a couple of months. Yes Silicone is probably the safer of the two but in this case, not the best lubrication. It just isn't thick enough or have the staying power on this application. Silicone works greatbon small projects and parts but notbunder pressure so much for this.This is from my own research and actual implementation on this particular flight stick. Also you can look at the Meterial safety data sheets on the particular grease I used, you can also find that info and safe use information at the manufacturer. Thanks again for the comment. Have a great day.

Dont use a jelly or wet grease on electronics. Always use a dry grease last longer and works better less messy. Also less chance of messing the electronics up.
@RippleLife
@RippleLife 10 жыл бұрын
Not the case in a dry lube. (The grease is also not applied to the electronic components not that its impossible for some to get on it). Dry lubes are not effective in most applications like this. And are definitely not the safest for electronics overall just because they are dry lubes. Dry lubes are made for mostly (not all) open or exposed places and can work well in some applications. They are definitely not (less messy) dry lubes tend to migrate and spread. Also they are hard to apply unless they are sprayed or "squirted" through the small tube they come in. They also would not come close to the thickness of the lubrication needed for most applications like this as 99% of dry lubes are very very thin and would wear off very quickly. Dielectric greases are silicone based (wet grease) and most greases people are trying for electronics are a form of this. Thanks for mentioning a dry lube it may have been a question someone was thinking to themselves that needed answering.

Sorry about taking so long to reply. Somehow your comment ended up in spam. Ok Now.... I have a guess to why its doing that. First try taking that o-ring out completely then try it. its either going to be better or worse. if better then grease it up good and don't worry about the o-ring. (that's how im running mine) If its worse then your main spring needs to be stretched or you can add a thicker oring in the place of or a thin one on the bottom of the spring to help push it up to the stop. That's the things I would try. A good thing is that this stick runs off of halleffect so it won't affect the actual movement. But that would annoy me.

Would be interesting to know if you could fix the thing with the wobbly stick by removing the o-ring. I ran into the same problem but not so strong and just on the y-axis. Btw, thank you ronin51670 for this extremely helpful video!

Well honestly i really don't know. I have done much less mods lately though. I'm just not sure if people are able to get the VKB's black mamba. but its possible they have upped their game... I hope so.

I have to agree. They could have just put a little more into it by making the ball metal and the pressure plate metal. That would have fixed it. BUT as I have said before. With the problem fixed. It is the best stick on the market. Nothing out performs or pecission's it. Accept the black mamba. But try getting one of them. I hope they start making them more accessible sometime soon.

ronin51670 I just did this to my stick, and it was worth every second of work Before my stick wouldn't even center properly from all the friction, and I had a hard time getting it to register at the extremes of the axis. Thanks for the video!

Try calibration and sometimes software and driver reinstall unless something physically worng or actual problem. Good luck. Oh possible a sensor problem or came loose. Try the calibration and driver first and of course system reboot. Then do an inspection of the stick. Hope this helps have a good one.

***** The TM Warthog is inherently flawed. Everyone had some kind of mechanical issues with it. Those who haven't simply didn't notice/thought it's normal. This is my point. This is the point. I don't claim it's not the best hotas on the market. Which is really sad if put it all together.

Great info, thanks! But what can we really expect considering that everything is made in China...🤦‍♂️
@RippleLife
@RippleLife 2 жыл бұрын
As China is most definitely capable of producing high quality components, I do believe that the parts in question were chosen to be made at a much lower cost therefore impacting on the bottom line. But again this is never the way that a longterm company should go. I believe that we are in a time when things are being made so cheap and disposable that nothing will last so we consume and consume. I think all businesses need to strive to make DURABLE and properly working components that a good company can be proud of. Just as we did 50 years ago. We made things that lasted that customers would be proud of purchasing. And a major plus is loyal customers. Gotta run, take care.

@RippleLife

Peter Stubbs Not all have the issue. Some never get it. But there is a majority that do. Still even with that. It is the best that is available. I would not hesitate to get another one. Especially after reviewing the X55. Three of them. That is the worst stick ever for $200. I can see it at $50 and it be worth it. Nothing more.

First you only pay $350 - $400. Second it's still the best stick on the market. Third not all have the stiction. And it only took about 45 min to deal with it. Now days almost everything you buy has a problem. And most of the time you can remedy it. If you not to lazy or ignorant about what your doing.
