Spring wobble versus that dry clutch slide. _Mmm._ TM's reluctance to release enthusiast hardware is revealing to how niche said market is, as if the cut needed for middlemen and marketing couldn't be covered at competitive cost. VKB, Virpil, Slaw, Milan, Wingwing, (not up to date on Honeycomb's latest issues) everyone pulling the weight on that end of the market are a grace for their efforts.

@@holdintheaces7468 Indeed. Getting one ultimately meant swapping the base to upgrade away from the Warthog's gimbal. Even were prices comparable, TM doesn't quite compete on the same tier.

Seeing your careworn TM Warthog made me realise how long I've had mine. 13 years. It's never missed a beat. Before the TM I would go through sticks every three years at at least. Probably the best simming investment I ever made. The new base looks great and probably finally gets rid of "sticktion", but I'm currently poor so I'll have to coax a few more years out of what I've got. Thanks for the video.

It's weird but I was very much in the same "I prefer it on the desk" mindset until I picked up my own desk mounts. The concept didn't really make sense until I had both throttle and stick mounted and properly positioned at which point I wondered why I resisted in the first place; I always thought the X56 was an oversized stick, not returning it initially because it was the ONLY thing that wouldn't break the bank at the time but after some positional adjustment I found all of the previously difficult to reach POV hats and especially that bugger of a button marked A easier to reach and the throttle toggles much more usable. It's still not the most ergonomic HOTAS but the mounts definitely helped. If you ever want to try it I'd suggest some of the universal mounts on Amazon. They're more of a task to set up but it means you won't be as locked into a particular brand when (and it is always when) you upgrade in the future.

The default dampers were my biggest worry about this, and sounds like it was well founded. Having played around with rotary dampers of that type I had a sneaky feeling they wouldn't be heavy enough. Hopefully they'll release much more powerful ones later. Thanks for the review and showcase ralfi, always love that you air out your gripes on these. =)

Needing an adapter just to angle your grip is such a backwards move. Why does it work without an adapter on my virpil warbrd-d and not on the AVA base? This Base and its price doesnt make any sense.

Am I crazy or is the Virpil Warbird base more featured for slightly less money? That one has adjustable dampers in it, doesn't it?
@Chaos_Rifle
@Chaos_Rifle 25 күн бұрын
Correct. Warbrd-D has better dampers and is more full featured, allows for a LOT of firmware tuning like axis-to-buttons and button-to-axis at a firmware level, and can accept virpil or thrustmaster grips, with hall effect sensors. No clue what the new TM base is using, but I am alarmed by it not being mentioned what sensors its using, or at least its resolution.

Gotta say, good customizable dampers change the game. I have two vkb mk3 bases. With some nyogel they do not bounce/wobble. One is springless for heli flying and holds its place while also having negligible stiction. I think it costs less than this too. Definitely need to make sure that dampers are good (and regrease with nyogel which is so so worth the effortl

Drill a 10cm hole in your desk, mount the gimbal right below it so you can un-screw the stick and plug the hole with a flat plug. That price is ruff. I have my Warthog stick on the VKB Gladiator MK2 which costs 95€ and has a fully mechanical gimbal

goddammit, i just spent a bunch on simracing equipment allready this year, and now they throw this at me... i was thinking of adding another stick base to my cockpit setup so i can more easily swap between stick on the side or between the legs setups... this might just be exactly the right hardware, using the mechanical base for right console, and the old warthog base for between the legs with an extension( i'd love that for chopper flying)

Thank you for the review. I must admit I was worried that the base would be a ball-in-socket type gimbal, but I must say that the quality of the cam type looked really solid and high quality. Funny thing (or maybe not) that on RC transmitters, even the really cheap ones from china, all have the cam style gimbals. So the fact that we still get expensive joysticks today with the ball-and-socket type is just shameful. I just wished that Thrustmaster would have worked a bit more on the height of the base.

300 bucks just for the base...used to be 300 bucks just for the stick & base. I still have my 13 yr old warthog joystick which I have modded to work on my VKB base, but I would be interested in knowing if going back to Thrustmaster would be worth it. Ive had a virpil warBRD, I use a VKB MCE Ultimate with a 200mm extension, and I honestly loved my warthog the most even with the gimbal issues and stiction stuff.

Warthog hotas is still the best! I have mine for 6 years and its like new, right out of the box look.it's the highest quality on the market still with metal materials and high quality buttons and switches. Also it is a replica of a-10! every other hotas its an imaginary panel full of switches.. The best for TM is to release a warthog thrust with metal thrustgrips, better slew hat and magnetic EAC switch. every other part of it is just perfect still!

While I'd happily agree with you that the TM sticks are excellent. The Warthog as a whole package isn't even close to being the best on the market. Its base is dated, cheaply made, and suffers from some serious design flaws that keep it from competing with the newer designs like the WarBRD and Gladiator.

TM started local here in the developers garage. I went and picked up the first original TM from there, very nice individual. It was pretty much the first of its kind as far as fighter jet joysticks for PC. It really wasn't that great since the gimble system was aluminum and was a bit sloppy and wore a bit. But it was still cool. I still have it. I did upgrade to the Hotas Warthog too. Haven't flown in years but keep thinking about getting back into DCS. I really like the idea of this new base. I just don't understand what the people at Thrustmaster are thinking. They have had a monopoly in the flight sim segment for over a decade. After years of being for better products Thrustmaster just ignored all of us. Over the last 5 years Winwing, VKB, and others have produced very high quality products at a much better price. Now Thrustmaster wants to keep there customers or do they? From the majority plastic $500 F16 throttle to this overpriced plastic toy. It's like Thrustmaster don't want to provide a quality product.

on the pins matter, its a ps/2 port its an old format of serial connection now days replaced by USB pins 2 and 6 are non connects and it seems they cheaped out on a full connector for the stick... which is cheap at best, shitty production at worst.

Just mount the base plate at the desired angle.. and chuck that angle extender offset adapter thingy. That wobble is horrible!! More new gear, that is more expensive and sucks… No thanks!
