I think you need to put the strap around the rack not just the hull-a-port

thanks....I used these for about 3 years and then I bought a trailer, but recently sold the trailer and I couldn't remember how to use the straps....best kayak mount out there IMO

Should there be a rubber bottom that rests on the crossbars ?

So the front and rear tiedowns just rub up against the bumper paint, headlight, hood etc?

Wrong, you done the same as me by not reading the instructions properly. You need to thread this around the roof bars. This is poor advice and could end in disaster
