I think you nailed it on the minimalism comment. The Eagle Creek is going to work better in sub 25 liter bags where space and weight are more of a premium. The engineering on the Thule is really nice! Using the zipper as a fabric stiffener is brilliant.

I love my Thule compression cubes! Two medium fit perfectly in the non-compression side of my Monos carry-on. I was able to use one for tops and one for bottoms. I used one small one for socks and undies on the other side and another small with back-up clothes in my personal item bag.

I looked at Thule and Eagle Creek, but chose to buy Taskin Air Duo. These packing cubes are relatively light and have an incredibly durable YKK zippers and compression lining. The compression zipper is well-designed and works great. One side is durable mesh, which lets me see what I packed in the cube. The other side is for dirty clothes - similar to Peak Design but much more affordable. The Taskin cubes are all 13.8" wide and vary in length from 17.5", 10.2" and 6.7" so 1 XL, 2 mediums, 1 medium + 1 small and 3 smalls all fit any 22" x 14" carry on.

Good review! Yes I thought of roof racks. But they do make car bags for the roof of the car, so travel bags make sense.

I certainly do not need more packing cubes as I've always liked to have a variety on hand.. I've had inexpensive Amazon Basics and I have waterproof black hole Patagonia... and choices in between. I purchased a small Thule packing cube when they first came out on a promotional credit and then liked it so much that I ended up getting a medium much later at REI, also on a membership sale. I don't necessarily need to have _compression_ packing cubes because that's what my packing straps or panels are for but sometimes they're perfect for your needs. One thing that always bugged me is when I'm zipping one up I would always pick the wrong zipper (was I compressing or uncompressing .. was I trying to open it?) The Thule has a white and a black zipper so one quick glance and you know which one to pull. The fabric is still lightweight and you're right about the little rim. You said it was due to the rollover of the fabric but I actually thought it might have been one of the slight "cappellini type" insert that's put into the brims of most packable hats. I don't know how else to describe it so that's why I thought pasta 🤔 I don't have the Eagle Creek personally but I have seen them in REI and I would still choose the Thule! 👍🏻

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the black and white zippers. That's such a handy feature. You may be right, it does almost feel like there is something in that rim, so maybe they did sew in a little piece of fabric pasta 😆

A combination of both happens to fit well in my 35 liter carry on clothes bag. Probably the biggest criticism I have with the eagle creeks though is that issue with the difficulty to zip. It always takes me 2x or more time to compress the eagle creeks vs the thule and I don't even pack the eagle creeks that tightly when fully packed. That time adds up and it's pretty tempting to make the switch. I'll have to do some testing with the shape difference between the medium sizes. The eagle creek medium fits my pants and shorts pretty perfectly width wise which is what I use it for. My current setup is an eagle creek medium, eagle creek small, eagle creek shoe bag, then above that two thule small, a sea to summit small hanging bag and an eagle creek x small non-compression for travel towel.

Eagle Creek is a little harder to get the compression zipper shut because the fabric is thinner. Depending on what I'm doing, I will usually just leave it open when I'm at my location, then compress it when I need to squish my bag down more to get on a flight.

I really enjoy these videos. Personally I used the Eagle Creek for years, and then switched to the Peak Design, which I then purchased for my wife as well. What I didn't like about the Eagle Creek is that when they were compressed they would make a somewhat oblong or football shape and it wasn't as efficient for packing, where as the Peak Design stay in a rectangular form factor and use space better in my travel packs or carryon roller. I haven't tried the Thule, however I am completely satisfied with the Peak. The only others I have tried are the Patagonia Black Hole, however they are rounded and I can't seem to pack them as efficiently. They are incrredibly durable however.

That's a fair criticism, the Eagle Creek does kind of squish down more on the ends and can leave it a little "football shaped." Peak Design cubes are awesome too, I like the Clean/Dirty separator.

6:32 I think Thule is the winner in the opening design. Their opening makes for a shorter zipping length (the length of the path a zipper has to travel for it to close). It could matter, or it could not. Maybe you are really packing it out, and in that case a shorter zipping length is more appreciated. But in the end, it could just not matter for ones use case. I just want to give them credit for a smarter solution :) I think many companies (at least cheaper options) copies the Eagle Creek cubes because of their popularity and therefore uses their opening.

That's a great point about the distance to travel for the zippers, I didn't think of that but it's true that it's easier to close the Thule cube and this is probably a large part of why. It's weird because the previous model of the Isolate cubes had the side opening zipper, then they changed it on the new one. I don't think it matters that much, just seems like an odd update.

Just my take on the comparison. I would like to see a empty (uncompressed) volume measurement for each. Is the empty depth the same? I've used Eagle Creek for years, but might try the Thule.

Good point. The sides are basically the same size so you're going to be able to fit a little more in the Thule cubes, but it's not that different when uncompressed. I just packed the Thule cube up full and transferred it to the Eagle Creek. The Eagle Creek cube was slightly more full, but not by much.

Thanks for all your amazing comparisons. I bought the Cabin Zero Military 36l on the back of your review of its smaller brother the 28l! I’m heading away for a week in Croatia soon and staying in 3 different places with a small hold bag and the military 36 as personal item so think compression cubes will help a lot. Eagle creek are not easy to find in the UK so wondered what your thoughts are on the Peak design vs Thule compression cubes? They seem similar in their style of compression and retaining a more rectangular shape. Like the clean/dirty function of the PD but worried they might be too big. Is it purely what fits best in my case and back pack or are the PD and Thule better for storing different items of clothing? Or would a mix be better? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as neither are cheap options. Thanks

I'm in Costa Rica or I'd check. PD cubes are great but you're right, they are kind of big and don't compress much unless you have the cube really full. Without trying it I'd think the Thule would be better for this, its a little smaller and has better compression.

@@MumenRider78 I preferred the Thule on the Croatia trip. I found the big PD cube too big to fit in either small bags I took so left that at home. I used the small Thule for a weeks underwear, swimsuit and pjs, the big Thule for tops and shorts and the small peak designs for trousers and long skirts. The big Thule fit nicely in my military 36l. The PD didn’t compress as much as the Thule’s. The PD’s may be better in a standard hold suitcase. My hold case was hold-all type were the main compartment was wider at the bottom than at the top so that made placing packing cubes tricker so could only fit the small PD lengthways and the small Thule. Packing cubes in general def helped speed up packing and unpacking at 3 different accommodation in the week and I knew what was is each cube. Hope that helps.

@@emmawaldron7023 Ok, I currently have the Farpoint 40l with the osprey Ultralight garment folder. Will give it some thought as my main worry with the Thule compression set is that it will crease my clothes.

Joey, again, Geoff. People LOVE the compression cubes. But, I don't get it. Sure, they are kind of fun and would organize so well- that is, maybe help your brain just knowing sox are in this bag, etc. But, I don't see how, physically, they would not take up room enough to add at least 3 more T-shirts. I guess if I were able to take more on my trip I would like them. But, I need maximum room with one carry-on and one personal items bag. Seems to me that when I close that carry-on I'm going to have all the compression I need. Crazy?

You definitely don't need cubes. I like the organization, espeically the clean/dirty cubes, but they are necessary. The Eagle Creek cubes are pretty small and thin, maybe one t-shirt worth. I like the Peak Design cubes, but they're quite large, those are like 3 t-shirt cubes. It's always a trade-off between how organized you want to be vs sacrificing the extra space of the cubes. Some bags, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, have zippered compartments and don't really need cubes. Some bags don't have any interior organization. For these I think it's nice to have cubes to separate your clothes, otherwise they are all just in a big ball in your bag and you have no way to separate clean and dirty clothes. Of course you can just use a plastic bag, zip lock or the like. Does the same thing just doesn't look as nice.

Boy, I just received my Cabin Zero Military 28L (Or 23L as your shared :) ) and I have my old school packing cubes and I almost bought the EC compression the other day... But now I am thinking Thule may be the better constructed piece.... Hmmm.... Again, thanks!

@@OneBagTravels Went with 'Tripped' - they look like the EC compression (a little cheaper but same sizes as you used for the Cabin Zero 28L) ones, but they do not zip open very far as for packing... Hopefully I did not screw up here...

If you do focus on your folding then rolling tightly and neatly then you can fit the same items in a smaller cube and you have EASILY fit the trousers into the Eagle creek cube as it is currently underfilled. You can't do a proper comparison when you don't do it like for like ..

@@OneBagTravels It is about the size of the cube being correct for the contents and if you roll tightly and neatly the clothes arrive in a better condition typical man lol! you underfilled both cubes and to be fair you are bad at folding and rolling which are key to packing.. you can fit more in a smaller cube, take more and it arrive looking less like you slept in a bush so it is a win win situation ... you missed the point completely, just like you did with my other posts lol

@@OneBagTravels So if you practice using side seam to side seam and then roll the item and pick a cube that the tube shape fits in nicely across horizontally or vertically and put one next to the other and then put a second layer on either way and a third layer if the cube is deep enough but flatter is better in packing, if clothes fit snugly in the cube then there is no need to compress it as you don't take much anyway and you can choose a smaller cube. always put the heavy items like trousers on the bottom layer and put the t shirts on the next one and you could easily fit your undies and socks in a tiny cube or a ziplock bag, the small cube you use is twice the size of one you need... hope you understand what i was saying now... watch videos how to fold neatly and then roll it afterwards , brush the creases out as you roll and you will be surprised you don't look like an unmade bed when you get dressed lol ...

I can see doing this to get the displaced volume if you were somehow able to seal the cubes from leakage. But what is the purpose of submerging them in water on a scale?
